    Wanstead Flats History Walks : No. 2 : Aldersbrook Flats Introduction This is the largest single area of Wanstead Flats, with grassland, copses, mown areas for sports, a pond and a lake. It was also the scene, on a number of occasions in the past two centuries, of struggles against attempts to change the nature of the Flats by enclosure and building. There are few signs now of the former uses of Wanstead Flats, but this walk takes in those that are left and recounts some of the tumultuous history of the Flats. Time - the full walk takes about an hour and a half, but can be shortened. Terrain – flat, and along grass or earth paths or across mown grass areas. Facilities – refreshments are available at the cafe in the gatehouse of the City of London Cemetery and at the Golden Fleece pub. There is a shop with refreshments in the filling station in Aldersbrook Road near the start of the walk. Toilet facilities are available for patrons at the cemetery cafe and the pub. There are convenience shops on and near Aldersbrook Road. Transport - there are bus stops at the start of the walk in Aldersbrook Road E11 (corner of Park Road) on two bus routes - 101 (Wanstead - Gallions Reach) and W19 (Walthamstow - Ilford). You can start and finish the walk at the car park by Alexandra Lake (see point 4 on page 3).     ENGLISH HERITAGE STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT AND CONSERVATION MEASURES FOR WANSTEAD PARK LONDON BOROUGH OF REDBRIDGE NATIONAL HERITAGE PROTECTION PLAN PROJECT NO: 6612 MAY 2013 Executive Summary Wanstead Park is a Grade II* Listed landscape on the English Heritage (EH) Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest (other protective designations also apply). It includes the site of the once palatial Wanstead House and the remains of designed formal gardens, parkland and water features dating from the late 17 th century to early 19 th century (on the site of a 16 th century deer park and potentially designed Tudor gardens), plus remains relating to prehistoric and Roman activity. The landscape has evolved through several significant periods of investment and was once described by Repton as ‘one of the most magnificent places in this country’. Wanstead House was demolished in 1822 and, as a result, many of the garden features were abandoned at that time. The history of Wanstead Park is very well documented and the knowledge data-set is well supported by high quality archaeological fieldwork and scholarly historical research; the majority of which has been carried out by committed and informed local voluntary organisations and individuals, supported by the principal stakeholders. The Park is in mixed ownership with the majority being in the care of the City of London since 1878, and Wanstead Sports Ground Ltd. also maintaining a large area of the historic Park since the foundation of the Golf Club in 1893. English Heritage added Wanstead Park to their ‘Heritage at Risk’ register in 2009, in response to concerns that the framework of designed vistas and lakes were losing value.

    THE LAKE SYSTEM OF WANSTEAD PARK & THE MYSTERY OF THE HERONRY POND James Berry B Sc (Geog) Alan Cornish M Sc (Tpt) March 1978 1.01 SUMMARY Heronry Pond is one of a system of lakes in Wanstead Park. When full, it has a water surface area of over eight acres. But each summer, it usually dries out to nothing. The mystery is - what causes this to happen? Also, if the cause can be established, can anything be done to stabilise the pond and so realise its great potential amenity value? To answers these questions, the authors first show how the lake system of Wanstead Park was put together, between about 1670 and 1740. They trace the many factors in the past two centuries and more, which have changed the system to its modern form. The implications of enemy action during the Second World War and of storm sewer reconstruction nearby are identified. In particular, they show how Heronry Pond has twice previously gone through periods of serious decline, and how each time, it was saved. Geological data from a series of test borings is analysed to illustrate how Heronry Pond is both the central - and the weakest - link in the remaining chain of lakes. Results are assessed from a monitoring exercise undertaken on the pond during 1977. Finally, data from the monitoring exercise is used to test a range of alternative proposals aimed at countering the instability of the water level of the pond, and recommendations are made which will secure the future of both Heronry Pond and the rest of the historic lakes in Wanstead Park.

    SECTION 5 CHARACTER AREAS The Green at Woodford Bridge New Welcome Centre on Green Lane, Ilford CHARACTER AREAS Overview For the purpose of detailed assessment, Redbridge has been divided into eighteen character areas. These are parts of town which tend to be focussed on a centre and often constitute a coherent place. Streets and blocks within the area generally share physical characteristics and form neighbourhoods that are often, but not always, defined by physical boundaries (main roads, railways and landscape corridors) and are not constrained by administrative boundaries. Precise boundaries between character areas can be difficult to define, may overlap and can depend on interpretation. They can change over time. For these reason the areas are defined as ‘fuzzy’ overlapping blobs. A provisional list of 20 character areas was reduced to 18 during the project, as Ilford Lane has been described as part of South Ilford and Newbury Park has been combined with Aldborough. The extent of each character area has been described and the historic development of each area is summarised. Primary and secondary typologies are identified within the character area at a block or street level. Unique and locally specific elements are also defined. Area specific issues are identified and the capacity of each area to accommodate change is described. The 18 Character areas are illustrated in the map that follows. There are two other Wanstead Flats history walks in this series : Time - the full walk takes about an hour and a half, but can be No. 1 The Bushwood Side shortened. No. 3 The Flats at War Terrain – flat, and along grass or earth paths or across mown grass and an accompanying leaflet of historical background called areas. The Space Between Facilities – refreshments are available at the cafe in the gatehouse of the City of London Cemetery and at the Golden Fleece pub. There is a shop with refreshments in the filling station in Aldersbrook Road The booklets in this series were written and produced by Ron Allen, Andrew Cole, Mark Gorman and David Boote, from the Leyton & near the start of the walk.   • Character Areas
    SECTION 5 CHARACTER AREAS The Green at Woodford Bridge New Welcome Centre on Green Lane, Ilford CHARACTER AREAS Overview For the purpose of detailed assessment, Redbridge has been divided into eighteen character areas. These are parts of town which tend to be focussed on a centre and often constitute a coherent place. Streets and blocks within the area generally share physical characteristics and form neighbourhoods that are often, but not always, defined by physical boundaries (main roads, railways and landscape corridors) and are not constrained by administrative boundaries. Precise boundaries between character areas can be difficult to define, may overlap and can depend on interpretation. They can change over time. For these reason the areas are defined as ‘fuzzy’ overlapping blobs. A provisional list of 20 character areas was reduced to 18 during the project, as Ilford Lane has been described as part of South Ilford and Newbury Park has been combined with Aldborough. The extent of each character area has been described and the historic development of each area is summarised. Primary and secondary typologies are identified within the character area at a block or street level. Unique and locally specific elements are also defined. Area specific issues are identified and the capacity of each area to accommodate change is described. The 18 Character areas are illustrated in the map that follows.
