This genesis needs some little explanation. I had written certain studies with no particular ulterior object save to gain myself, and to pass on to others, a clear view of what seemed to me to be important episodes in the modern spiritual development of the human race. These included the chapters on Swedenborg, on Irving, on A. J. Davis, on the Hydesville incident, on the history of the Fox sisters, on the Eddys and on the life of D. D. Home. These were all done before it was suggested to my mind that I had already gone some distance in doing a fuller history of the Spiritualistic movement than had hitherto seen the light - a history which would have the advantage of being written from the inside and with intimate personal knowledge of those factors which are characteristic of this modern development. It is indeed curious that this movement, which many of us regard as the most important in the history of the world since the Christ episode, has never had a historian from those who were within it, and who had large personal experience of its development.

    WOLE SOYINKA'S OGUN ABIBIMAN By Tanure Ojaide Thomas Mofolo's Chaka seems to have set a literary trail in Africa, and Shaka has been the subject of many plays and poems. Shaka, the Zulu king, "is seen primarily as a romantic figure in Francophone Africa, as a military figure in Southern Africa. ul Moreover, "the extensive Shaka literature in Africa illustrates the desire of African writers to seek in Africa's past a source that will be relevant to contemporary realities "2 Shaka was a great military leader who restored dignity to his people, the sort of leadership needed in the liberation struggle in Southern Africa. Chaka is political, and "can be considered an extended praise song singing the deeds of this heroic Zulu leader; it can be regarded as an African epic cele­ brating the founding of an empire. u3 It is ironic that Wole Soyinka' s Ogun Abibi.man appeared the same year, 1976, that Donald Burness published his book on Shaka in African literature, writing that "Although Shaka is alluded to, for instance, in Soyinka's A Dance of the Forest~ the Zulu king appears very seldom in Nigerian literature. " Soyinka's Ogun Abibiman relies on Mofolo's Chaka and its military tradition together with the 0gun myth in the exhorta­ tion of black people fighting for freedom and human rights in Southern Africa. Ogun is a war-god, and the bringing together of Ogun and Shaka is necessary to fuse the best in Africa's military experience. Though the two have records of wanton killings at one time in their military careers, they, neverthe­ less, are mythically and historically, perhaps, the greatest warlords in Africa.

This work examines Creole ethnic identity, focusing particularly on the transition from Creole to American. In "becoming American," Creoles adapted to a binary, racialized caste system prevalent in the Jim Crow American South (and transformed from a primarily Francophone/Creolophone community (where a tripartite although permissive caste system long existed) to a primarily Anglophone community (marked by stricter black-white binaries). These adaptations and transformations were facilitated through Creole participation in fraternal societies, the organized labor movement and public and parochial schools that provided English-only instruction.

Beat out of blood with words sad-sung In strange un-Negro tongue So long So far away Is Africa -Langston Hughes, Free in a White Society INTRODUCTION When I started working in HISD’s Community Services my first assignment was working with inner city students that came to us straight from TYC (Texas Youth Commission). Many of these young secondary students had committed serious crimes, but at that time they were not treated as adults in the courts. Teaching these young students was a rewarding and enriching experience. You really had to be up close and personal with these students when dealing with emotional problems that would arise each day. Problems of anguish, sadness, low self-esteem, disappointment, loneliness, and of not being wanted or loved, were always present. The teacher had to administer to all of these needs, and in so doing got to know and understand the students. Each personality had to be addressed individually. Many of these students came from one parent homes, where the parent had to work and the student went unsupervised most of the time. In many instances, students were the victims of circumstances beyond their control, the problems of their homes and communities spilled over into academics. The teachers have to do all they can to advise and console, without getting involved to the extent that they lose their effectiveness.

    1 Colophon: The Friends of the SMU Libraries: The First Twenty Years By Michael V. Hazel In the fall of 1970 Southern Methodist University celebrated its fifty-fifth anniversary. From a small college on a weed- choked prairie several miles north of downtown Dallas, it had developed into one of the major centers of learning in the state of Texas, with an outstanding faculty and a student body numbering close to 10,000. The university's growth had been paralleled--had, in fact, been made possible--by the development of its libraries. The Bridwell Library, serving Perkins School of Theology, had recently added a wing, and under the leadership of Librarian Decherd Turner had begun acquiring the rare volumes and early examples of fine printing which would bring its collections national renown. A new four-story wing had just been added to Fondren Library, greatly expanding shelf space for the central library, as well as creating new reference and reading areas. The Underwood Law Library opened its doors that fall of 1970, providing law students for the first time with a spacious, modern facility. 2 With the libraries' physical plant so greatly improved, attention turned to the collections themselves. Through the fiscal inflation of the late 1960s, the cost of books and periodicals had escalated, and it was clear that the university's budget could not meet all the libraries' needs. The libraries needed friends. And because SMU represented such an important cultural and educational resource to the Dallas community, it seemed only logical to look to that community for support.

    WORKS LIKE A CHARM: THE OCCULT RESISTANCE OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE by Noelle Victoria Dubay A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland August 2020 Abstract Works like a Charm: The Occult Resistance of Nineteenth-Century American Literature finds that the question of whether power could work by occult means—whether magic was real, in other words—was intimately tied, in post-Revolutionary America, to the looming specter of slave revolt. Through an examination of a variety of materials—trial narratives, slave codes, novels and short stories, pamphlets, popular occult ephemera—I argue that U.S. planters and abolitionists alike were animated by reports that spiritual leaders boasting supernatural power headed major rebellions across the Caribbean, most notably in British-ruled Jamaica and French-ruled Saint-Domingue. If, in William Wells Brown’s words, the conjurer or root-doctor of the southern plantation had the power to live as though he was “his own master,” might the same power be capable of toppling slavery’s regimes altogether? This question crossed political lines, as proslavery lawmakers and magistrates as well as antislavery activists sought to describe, manage, and appropriate the threat posed by black conjuration without affirming its claims to supernatural power. Works like a Charm thus situates the U.S. alongside other Atlantic sites of what I call “occult resistance”—a deliberately ambivalent phrase meant to register both the documented use of occult practices to resist slavery and the plantocracy’s resistance to the viability of countervailing powers occulted (i.e., hidden) from their regimes of knowledge—at the same time as it argues that anxiety over African-derived insurrectionary practices was a key factor in the supposed secularization of the West.
