Horse Shelter Diaries – NM USA 65:00 min / Directed by: Donna Wells Trailer: https://vimeo.com/154595529 Horse Shelter Diaries is a new documentary by filmmaker, Donna Wells, whose purpose was to make the public aware that there are healthy viable horses for adoption out at The Horse Shelter in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Nine horse trainers took 9 horses that had never been saddled and ridden and trained them for 100 days then competed at the Gimme Shelter: Trainers’ Rally for Rescues event at the National Day of the Cowboy celebration. Over 1200 people witnessed what a difference a little training can make in the lives of these horse. The horses were then auctioned off to qualified bidders and went to their new homes. The individual personalities of the rescue horses and the role of the trainers in their lives is the focus of the new documentary. Most horses end up at the Shelter because they have never been taught boundaries or skills. Wells said she was touched to see that all the trainers were genuinely invested in the welfare of the horses. “These horses are priceless,” trainer Erica Hess told the filmmaker, “and I feel like we’re just mining the gold that is in each of them.” 4.19.2017 www.equusfilmfestival.net Facebook TWITTER #EFFNYC #EQUUSFILM #EFFTOUR #EFFMARYLAND 1 FRIDAY 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm HORSES AS HEALERS (Unbridled is from North Carolina – The Edge is from South Carolina) The Edge – Bruce Anderson Natural Humanship – SC USA 39:00 min / Directed by: James O’Connor Trailer: https://vimeo.com/161533904 Bruce Anderson believes that man's capacity to reduce the wild is the cause and effect of mental imbalance. The impact that horses have had on his life is fundamental to his work which uses a 1000 lb animal to deliver an epiphany: you are merely a steward of this earth. Unbridled – NC USA 111:00 min / Directed by: John David Ware Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4a3OgBmsY4 "Unbridled" is an emotionally gripping, unforgettable and uplifting story of redemption, healing, and overcoming some of life’s greatest obstacles. This captivating feature film tells the tale of an abused girl who teams up with an abused horse and their journey to healing. Inspired by a true story, the movie features actors you love such as Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight; The Expendables) and T.C. Stallings (War Room; Courageous). "Unbridled" was created to draw attention to the practice of sexual slavery, which is growing in all parts of the world, paticularly in the suburbs of the USA. Please help us expose the atrocity of child sexual abuse and trafficking. With your support we will call attention to this industry and how to recognize this abuse. And what better way to do that than through a movie?! "Unbridled" is inspired by the Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC. Since 2008 the Corral Riding Academy has been privileged to help over 100 abused girls through one-year long therapy programs. They pair up abused girls with abused horses and through intensive one-on-one training the girls teach the horses to trust. In the process the girls also learn to trust again. These true stories of hope and healing were the inspiration for "Unbridled." A portion of the proceeds from "Unbridled" sales go directly to Corral. 4.19.2017 www.equusfilmfestival.net Facebook TWITTER #EFFNYC #EQUUSFILM #EFFTOUR #EFFMARYLAND 2 FRIDAY 9:00 pm – 10:30 pm FOR THE LOVE OF HORSES Slow and steady wins the race: The story of Laura Graves and Diddy – NY 06:02 min / Directed by: Nette-Lee Lax Trailer: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/story-laura-graves-and-diddy Her story begins on a small farm in Vermont, but the journey of Laura Graves and her horse, Verdades, has been nothing short of incredible. For those of you in a hurry, my tips are at the end of this article. Disclaimer - I have not enjoyed great Grand National success over the years, but that won't stop me from sharing my tips and tactics with you. But, before we get into the euphoria of all that, you would be disappointed if I did not throw in a few ‘risk warnings’: Risk warnings Tipping horses is not an activity regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Betting on a horse is a gamble not an investment. A bit like high tech stocks on P/E ratios of 200 plus in 2000. I have no qualifications or expertise in horse racing and my past performance is no indication of future performance (which is a good thing?). What goes up might come down and not get up again. Especially over Becher’s Brook. Only bet for fun and with an amount you would be happy to lose. If you want decent long term returns send your money to QED not Ladbrokes. Your relationship might be at risk if you don’t place your partner’s (or boss’!) winning bet. A word on Efficient Markets … In an efficient market the price contains all the known information. If new information arrives it can change the price.

  • Monty Roberts Speaks the Language of Equus
Monty Roberts p aks theLanguageofEquu by Vicki Hanson or anyone who has ever witnessed it, the brutal scene in the classic 1961 film The Misfits in which Clark Gable fights a wild stallion at the end of a rope indelibly defines a thousand similar struggles between man and horse. But this Western also gives us a surprising break with tradition Gable's character suddenly frees the animal, acknowledging finally that destroying its spirit murders something in ourselves. This has been the message of Monty Roberts (ASCI '59, Boots and Spurs '86 honoree) for most of his 62 years. Exposed to the world of horse training and rodeo competition throughout his youth, he sought a different direction from his father's methods of tying up horses to "break" them. He developed instead the gentle craft of "starting" young horses, using a body language he calls "Equus" that he learned as a 13-year old studying mustangs in the Nevada desert. Roberts has catalogued his methods in his bestseller, The Man Who Listens to Horses (Random House, 1997), magazine articles, and shows like Dateline NBC. These methods are deceptively simple: Wearing his trademark tweed cap, he stands in the middle of a round pen, Rohet"L'i works with a racehorse feelri'lIl ot the starting gate.
