A children’s book written through the eyes of Shy Boy and interpreted by Monty. About Monty Roberts Monty Roberts, known as the “Man Who Listens to Horses” has led an extraordinary life. An award‐winning trainer of championship horses, best‐selling author, Hollywood stunt man, foster dad to 47 children (in addition to three of his own) and creator of the world‐ renowned and revolutionary equine training technique called Join‐Up®, Monty Roberts could now, in his later years, be resting on his laurels, but that’s not his style. Roberts has won countless awards and received immense worldwide press coverage, put three books on the New York Times best‐seller list, trained some of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s equestrian team in London and been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich as well as one from the University of Parma In Italy. If you go looking for Monty Roberts, you won’t find him lounging in his favorite chair high up in the hills overlooking his horse‐training farm in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. The “Man Who Listens To Horses” is more likely to be found somewhere on the globe continuing to spread his message of nonviolence. You’re more likely to find him speaking to incarcerated youth in a juvenile detention facility, gentling his 15,000th horse at a demonstration, teaching his techniques to the growing number of students at his International Learning Center in Solvang, California or advising executives at Fortune 500 companies. Why have millions of people from all walks of life responded to his PBS television shows, books, demonstrations, and media appearances with such passion? What makes Monty’s message so compelling that everyone from the C.I.A. to Volkswagen invite this cowboy to share his experiences with their executives and leaders? Perhaps it comes from the undeniable power of personal experience, of having witnessed too many horses “broken” in using violent, traditional methods.

Davis Religious Education Brigham Young University Contact at Horse Sense & Healing Instructor Handbook Acknowledgements Monty Roberts discovered that horses have a language while studying the mustangs in Nevada in the 1940s. His experience with returning Veterans from the Korean War began during his college days in the 1950s and Monty has been a student of hors- es and people all his life. With two doctorates in Behavioral Sci- ence and an unquenchable thirst to learn more, Monty attracted the attention of Discovery Military in 2010 resulting in the doc- umentary Horse Sense and Soldiers. Monty remains the inspira- tion and energy behind this program which has developed with the help of his team on Flag Is Up Farms and devoted profes- sionals who intend to see that the concepts of trust and commu- nication, through Join-Up, shape a more peaceful future for all. Pat Roberts, as Executive Director of the non-profit Join-Up International, helped develop the program by guiding support from benefactors to this worthwhile program. Pat has a life- long commitment to help individuals reach their potential and, through making good choices, live happier lives. Nowhere is Pat’s commitment more evident than the fact that Monty and Pat together raised 47 foster children, as well as three biological children of their own. Debbie Roberts Loucks has brought many projects to her par- ents, Monty and Pat, which share the beneficial qualities of Join-Up to challenged populations such as at-risk youth, pris- oners and victims of violence.

  • Monty Roberts Speaks the Language of Equus
Monty Roberts p aks theLanguageofEquu by Vicki Hanson or anyone who has ever witnessed it, the brutal scene in the classic 1961 film The Misfits in which Clark Gable fights a wild stallion at the end of a rope indelibly defines a thousand similar struggles between man and horse. But this Western also gives us a surprising break with tradition Gable's character suddenly frees the animal, acknowledging finally that destroying its spirit murders something in ourselves. This has been the message of Monty Roberts (ASCI '59, Boots and Spurs '86 honoree) for most of his 62 years. Exposed to the world of horse training and rodeo competition throughout his youth, he sought a different direction from his father's methods of tying up horses to "break" them. He developed instead the gentle craft of "starting" young horses, using a body language he calls "Equus" that he learned as a 13-year old studying mustangs in the Nevada desert. Roberts has catalogued his methods in his bestseller, The Man Who Listens to Horses (Random House, 1997), magazine articles, and shows like Dateline NBC. These methods are deceptively simple: Wearing his trademark tweed cap, he stands in the middle of a round pen, Rohet"L'i works with a racehorse feelri'lIl ot the starting gate. Source : Pitch Publicity 01 nov. 2011 10h42 HE Equine Sensation Monty Roberts Leads Off National Animal Supplement Council's 2012 Annual Conference VALLEY CENTER, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 1, 2011) - Three-time New York Times bestselling author and award- winning trainer of championship horses, Monty Roberts will headline the National Animal Supplement Council's (NASC) annual conference May 8-11, 2012, at the Town and Country Resort and Conference Center in San Diego. Roberts is an award-winning trainer of championship horses, bestselling author of, "The Man Who Listens to Horses," Hollywood stunt man (stand-in rider and stunt double for Elizabeth Taylor in "National Velvet" and worked alongside James Dean during the pre-production and filming of "East of Eden") and creator of the world- renowned and revolutionary equine training technique and philosophy called, "Join~Up." Over his vast career, Roberts has received countless awards and worldwide press coverage including documentaries about his training techniques on PBS and BBC television networks, and was personally recruited by Queen Elizabeth II to train her equestrian team in London. Disenchanted from watching his father "break" horses using traditional methods involving pain, control, fear and coercion, at the age of 13, Roberts devoted himself to extensive study and observation of wild horses. This lead to his discovery that horses use a discernable, effective and predictable body language to communicate set boundaries, show fear and express annoyance, relaxation or affection. Roberts used their silent language as his platform for a much more effective and humane training method, encouraging true partnership between horses and humans. This moment of partnership he coined, "Join~Up," has become the foundation of all his work with horses and people.

  • Horsemanship Competence
Abstract During the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Sports Forum on April 4th, 2016 an issue was raised by Olympic Champion Steve Guerdat who stated: “People need to learn to follow procedures. Judges need to learn that, but one thing we cannot miss is the horsemanship these people should have. Yes we need rules, the rules are black and white, but we must not forget we have a horse in our sport. A living animal and the officials must understand the importance of horsemanship.” However, a comprehensive understanding of horsemanship was lacking and resulted in the matter often being mystified. Consequently, a study was initiated by the FEI Education and Standards Department to assist in determining whether the concept of horsemanship could be defined more substantively and to develop a potential baseline understanding of the necessary skills, abilities and attributes for horsemanship competence. An in-depth literature review along with qualitative semi-structured interviews with one hundred and five individuals from six continents, thirty different countries, in eight equestrian disciplines and twenty-one different stakeholder perspectives were conducted to address this subject matter. Based on these findings, horsemanship competence could be defined as the utilization of the fourteen elements outlined below. ! Comprehensive Knowledge ! Commitment to the Priority of Equine ! Practical Experience Welfare ! Growth Mindset ! Emotional Intelligence ! Respect for the Horse ! Humility and Integrity ! Ethological Empathy ! Adaptability ! Effective Application of the ! Patience Learning Theory ! Selection and Treatment of ! Aware and Attentive to Body Support Team Language ! Development of a Mutual Symbiotic Relationship 2 About the Author Stefanie Krysiak graduated from the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology (AISTS) in Lausanne, Switzerland with a Master of Advanced Studies in Sport Administration and Technology in 2017 and was awarded the Best Participant Award based on her academic performance.
