For the past 30 years, the Wallace and Rowan families have played a special role in caring for the horses running the Iroquois Steeplechase. The families, related by marriage, celebrate Steeplechase as an annual tradition in which all their passions come together – passion for family, horses, and fun.

For his part in the race, Rowan has offered ambulance services for the horses competing in the race for nearly three decades. During the event, Rowan and his family provide three large trailers that are used to transport horses to the vet should they become injured during the race; the trailers are stocked with equipment and personnel for any need that may arise. This service ensures that safe, onsite transportation is available to the horses, which is necessary in the event of an emergency.

Similar to Rowan, Wallace and his family have been long-time caregivers to the horses participating in the race as well. He helped establish the misting and water stations that are used to cool the horses during the event. Wallace and his team, which consists of up to 20 volunteers, set up cooling stations at the entry and exit point to the track, as well as at the finish line, since it is vital to regulate the horses’ body temperature.

Without the support of the and commitment to the community that these gentlemen, and others like them display, the Iroquois Steeplechase would not be the success it is today. 6 2018 Honorary Co-chairs Have Long History of Community Service

In Celebration of the 77th Annual SUPPORT Iroquois Steeplechase - Percy Warner Park THE IROQUOIS

STEEPLECHASE Good Morning Steeplechase Fans,

Benefiting It’s an honor to welcome you to the 77th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase at the iconic Percy Warner Park. This historic race is not only one of the nation’s premier sporting events, but one of the city’s annual rites of spring to benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. We are delighted to host this wonderful event in one of our most historic parks. Percy Warner Park is one of several jewels in our city’s park system. Percy, along with Edwin Warner Park, spans more than 3,000-acres of forest and field and it’s just 9 miles from downtown. Collectively the two parks are known as “the Warner Parks.” Approximately one million people visit the two parks annually to enjoy scenic roadways and overlooks, hiking, biking and horse trails, cross-country running, two courses, a dog park, the equestrian center, the always popular Nature Center and more! We believe that we have one of the best park systems in the country, as is evidenced by our many facilities and programs that emphasize healthy lifestyles, recreational opportunities, and environmental education. This is an exciting time of growth for our city and for our department. As more and more people call Nashville home, it strengthens my resolve to uphold our mission to preserve, protect, and restore the natural and historical heritage of the city’s parklands for the perpetual benefit of all our citizens. I hope you will take advantage of the many amenities Metro Parks has to offer. It is known popularly as jump racing because its participants race at speed over a natural course and jump obstacles intermittently placed on the course. All the horses involved in steeplechase racing are , meaning that they trace their bloodlines to four foundation sires and are registered with The Club. Steeplechasing is a much smaller sport than flat racing, which is conducted at tracks such as . Most steeplechase horses had a career at the flat tracks, and some steeplechase horses have raced in flat-racing classics such as the Derby or . They are the exceptions, however. Most steeplechase horses had modest flat careers because they lacked sprinter speed and preferred longer distances. In their second careers as steeplechase horses, they excel with a combination of stamina and agility. The National Steeplechase Association, founded in 1895, is the governing body of American jump racing. Its Board of Directors is composed of committed horse owners and race-meet officials, and its full-time staff of four conducts regulatory and administrative functions from Fair Hill, Md.

A DAY AT THE RACES Most steeplechase racing days include five to seven races, though there are exceptions. The Maryland Hunt Cup, contested each spring near Glyndon, Maryland, is so special that it stands alone as the only race on the program. Attendance varies from tailgaters to horsemen, college students to senior citizens. Most spectators arrive a few hours before the first race, (usually 1 P.M.) to start their outing with lunch or conversations with friends. The racing brings excitement, in approximately half-hour increments. As a whole, steeplechasing allows fans to get closer to the sport than flat racing. You can stand right next to a fence, or watch the start of the race, or catch the thrills at the finish line. BY THE NUMBERS $5,998,50...... Purses paid in NSA races in 2017 1,000,000 ...... Acme_Steeplchase_Print_02.indd 1 4/25/18 9:49 PM For the Love of the Chase

When recounting the rich history of then Iroquois Steeplechase, a handful of surnames surface repeatedly: Houghland, Sloan, Frost, and Watkins; families as synonymous with the race as the names of their champion equine counterparts. Though the seven decade (and counting) run of the Iroquois Steeplechase is certainly impressive, it does not take into account the races, founded by many of the same horsemen, which took place in and around Nashville prior to the 1941 inception.

Before the Iroquois was founded as a permanent For the Lo of the Chase fixture on the city’s spring calendar, there was the The Equestrian Lives of Lowry Watkins & Barbara Bullitt Grasslands International Steeplechase in 1930, held R Kathleen C. McWhirter at a property near Gallatin, Tennessee, which Byron Hilliard won. Though the Grasslands event dissolved after only two years, the equestrians banded together once again in 1937 for the inaugural Green Pastures Steeplechase, held annually for five years at Mason Houghland’s home south of Nashville. Astride Galsac, Lowry Watkins, Sr. won the two- and- a-half mile race at Green Pastures in its fifth and final year in April 1941, one month before the first running of the Iroquois Steeplechase.

A successful businessman, accomplished rider, and rising Louisvillian when Barbara Bullitt was born in 1919, Lowry Watkins lived unaware of his future spouse for years until a shared love of horses brought them together. As four-time winners of the Iroquois and founders of the popular Oxmoor Steeplechase, this illustrious riding couple left an indelible mark on the equestrian community. In For the Love of the Chase, historian Kathleen McWhirter (author of Fierce Rivalries; Enduring Friendships: 75 Years of the Iroquois Steeplechase) expounds on the couple’s remarkable accomplishments while also providing glimpses into how they spent their time when not in the saddle.

Lowry Watkins hung up his racing silks, hunting whip, and mallet in the early 1970s, but his love of riding pursuits endured until his final day. Writing to fellow equestrian Henry Hooker in 1972, Watkins noted his intention to pen a book about his decades of involvement with horses. Watkins died in 1981 sans book, but his dreams have finally come to fruition inFor the Love of the Chase.

The Iroquois Steeplechase and its governing organization, the Volunteer State Horsemen’s Foundation, is appreciative of Mr. Watkins Jr. for his patronage of the race and wishes to acknowledge his father’s prominent role in cultivating the event to become a sporting event, rich with history, that continues to withstand the test of time.

40 Iroquois Steeplechase Hall of Fame The names of the many families associated with the Iroquois Steeplechase through recurrent generations wouldmake a very long list. The names of the owners, trainers, and riders who have mastered the Iroquois read like an honor roll of American steeplechasing. The names of the volunteers who have made this race meeting so special are no less to be recognized. We also honor the inductees into the Iroquois Steeplechase Hall of Fame. John K. The National Steeplechase Association places its highest priority on assuring the safety of steeplechase athletes, both equine and human. The National Steeplechase Association, its race meets and its horsemen undertake significant actions to assure a racing surface of the highest quality and take proactive steps to minimie the chances of injury. Regrettably, accidents will occur, but important actions have been taken to prevent them. Some of those proactive steps are: • Frequent safety inspections of the racecourses, and the presence of a designated safety adviser at the race meets • Aggressive, year-round turf care of our race-meet courses, which in some cases includes state-of-the-art watering systems and maintenance programs found more often at golf courses or other venues • Pre-race physical examinations by experienced, licensed equine veterinarians to determine whether the horses are suciently fit and sound to compete in a demanding athletic competition • ost-race medication testing to assure that no prohibited substances are present in the horse and that permitted medicines are within regulatory limits • Presence of a well-equipped equine ambulance on the course during the races, with an ocial veterinarian on duty to evaluate and direct the treatment of any injuries • The NSA’s Steeplechase Safety Committee researches and recommends improvements to enhance the safety of horses and ockeys.

82 About the Artist Leslie Mendez

The Iroquois Steeplechase selected Lesly Mendez as our first Child Artist. You will see Lesly’s work on the cover of the Race Day Program and the 2018 Official Iroquois Steeplechase Poster.

Mendez, an 18-year-old high school student, was selected as featured artist from among a field of young painters. She has been a lifelong drawer, but she only began painting with acryl- ics within the last two years; this also is the first competi- tion she has ever entered. Her selected painting, “Azul,” depicts a woman, a young girl, and a horse, all wearing garments in shades of blue. As the featured artist, Mendez will exhibit her painting on race day in the Children’s Hospital tent in the family area.

“I get my inspiration from nature and the beauty of colors, which adds life to anything,” Mendez said. “For this painting, I chose to focus on the color blue being worn by the woman, young girl, and horse. I wanted to convey the relationship the two females have with one another and the horse that they grew up with and hold so dear to their hearts.”

Mendez is currently a senior at Antioch High School, and she plans to attend college and pursue a career in one of the STEM fields. Endurance Oil on Wood Panel “So many talented artists submitted paintings for consideration, but Lesly’s captured our attention immediately,” Hall said. “Her painting embodies the essence of Iroquois Steeplechase, which is the deep connection we share with each other and with the majesty of the horses.”

84 A Steeplechase Glossary A Steeplechase Glossary Knowing these terms will help you understand and follow steeplechase races: Allowance: A race restricted to horses with certain records. Example: A “non- winners of two” allowance is open only to horses with one victory or less. Apprentice: A relatively inexperienced jockey. The National Steeplechase Association gives apprentice jockeys the following weight allowances (deduc- tions): Non-winners of one race, 10 pounds; of 15 races, five pounds. Jockeys must be at least 16 years old. Claiming: Certain races are designated as claiming races, where a horse may be purchased, or claimed. The claim is made and money put up before the race is run, and the purchase must go through, no matter where the horse fin- ishes. Only NSA licensees may claim horses. Furlong: The standard measure in U.S. Thoroughbred horse racing. One fur- long equals one eighth of a mile. Handicap: A race in which the horses are assigned different amounts of weight, according to their respective abilities and past performances. Maiden: A horse that has never won a race. National Fence: A synthetic steeplechase fence used at most stops in the United Sates. Consists of a steel frame stuffed with plastic “brush” at a height of 52 inches. A foam-rubber roll, covered with green canvas, is placed on the takeoff side. Novice: A horse in the early stages of its steeplechase career. Novice races are held at many meets, to give horses experience over hurdles before they compete with more-seasoned jumpers. National Steeplechase Association: The NSA, founded in 1895, is the gov- erning body for steeplechase racing in the . Based in Fair Hill, Md., the NSA sanctions races, takes entries, approves officials and inspects courses. The NSA licenses participants and keeps statistics. Paddock: Area where horses are saddled before a race. Purse: Total money distributed in a race. Winner collects 60 percent of total purse, with shares paid to sixth place. Stewards: Presiding officials (referees) at a race meet. They have final deci- sion on all matters pertaining to a race. They may levy fines on owners, train- ers or jockeys who violate the rules of racing. A typical ruling involves disqual- ification of a horse who interferes with another in a race. Each race meet has three stewards. Timber fence: Natural, wooden fence constructed of boards, logs or posts and rails. Timber races are held as part of many race meets. Wings: The panels on either side of a steeplechase fence which are designed to guide a horse to a fence.

8686 Questions & Answers About Steeplechasing Q. What types of obstacles are used in steeplechase racing? A. Almost all steeplechase races are run over timber fences or National Fences. Timber obstacles generally are post-and-rail fences. National Fences are manmade obstacles composed of a metal frame, a foam protective cushion on the takeoff side of the fence, and plastic brush branches atop the fence. Q. What are the distances of steeplechase races? A. Races over National Fences vary from two miles to the three miles of the Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Gr. 1). Timber races vary from three miles, the distance of the Mason Houghland Memorial, to four miles. Q. How tall are the fences? A. National Fences have a standard height of 4 1/2 feet. Timber fences vary from 3 1/2 feet to nearly five feet. Q. What is the ruling body of American Steeplechasing? A. The National Steeplechase Association, based in Fair Hill, Md., is the organization that sanctions race meets such as the Iroquois Steeplechase. Among its many functions, the NSA licenses owners, jockeys, and trainers; creates the races run at the race meets and obtains entries for them; trains and approves stewards; and promotes the sport through public relations and advertising. Q. What is the function of a steward? A. A steward is the referee of a race, assuring that the race has been fairly run and levying penalties for any infractions of the Rules of Racing. Steeplechase meets have four stewards, three to judge the running of the race and a fourth, the safety steward, to assure that medication and safety rules are followed. Q. What protective equipment do the jockeys wear? A. To ride in a steeplechase race, the jockeys must wear an approved protective helmet with standards approximating a motorcycle helmet, and a safety vest. Q. Do steeplechase jockeys carry whips? A. Almost all riders are equipped with a riding crop for their races. The National Steeplechase Association mandates a humane cushioned whip that creates a loud crack when used but does not hurt the horse. Q. How old are steeplechase horses? A. Steeplechase horses can be as young as 3 and as old as 12 for hurdle races and 14 for timber races. Q. Where do steeplechase horses come from? A. Many steeplechase horses have run at racetracks in flat races (without fences). As they grow older, some convert to racing over fences. Others were always intended to run in steeplechase races and never had a flat career. A significant percentage of steeplechase horses were bred overseas and raced in Ireland, England, or France. Q. Are steeplechase horses trained at the racetrack? A. No. Almost all steeplechase horses are trained on farms. Unlike flat horses at the track, most steeplechase horses have the opportunity to be turned out in paddocks after they complete their daily training. Q. What happens to the horses after their steeplechase careers? A. Most steeplechase horses have active careers after their racing days end. Many become fox hunters; others become show horses or pleasure-riding horses. Their retirements generally are at the farms of their owners or trainers. Q. Who are the jockeys? A. Many of the jockeys riding at Iroquois were born overseas and had riding careers there before coming to the United States. Others are American riders who have grown up around steeplechase racing. Q. Is the steeplechase horse a distinct breed? A. No. All steeplechase horses are registered Thoroughbreds, either in North America or the country where they were born. 87 Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt

When he was 2 years old, his mother noticed that his gait was off when he ran. Brooks contin- ued to have trouble running and bend- ing correctly, and when it came time for his 3-year-old checkup, his pediatrician agreed that something was off. Over the next year, Brooks saw many doctors, including Jeffrey E. Martus, M.D., at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, who ordered an MRI. Just one day after his fourth birth- day, Brooks’ family received the news that his scan revealed a pilocytic astro- cytoma, a brain tumor growing on his spinal cord. Brooks underwent a 10-hour-long surgery in hopes of removing the tumor. But unfortunately the tumor had grown to be so large that it had spread and could only be partially removed. When Brooks woke up from surgery, he was paralyzed from the waist down. And although he still can’t feel his legs, he persevered and did learn to walk again after six weeks.
