For the past 30 years, the Wallace and Rowan families have played a special role in caring for the horses running the Iroquois Steeplechase. The families, related by marriage, celebrate Steeplechase as an annual tradition in which all their passions come together – passion for family, horses, and fun.
For his part in the race, Rowan has offered ambulance services for the horses competing in the race for nearly three decades. During the event, Rowan and his family provide three large trailers that are used to transport horses to the vet should they become injured during the race; the trailers are stocked with equipment and personnel for any need that may arise. This service ensures that safe, onsite transportation is available to the horses, which is necessary in the event of an emergency.
Similar to Rowan, Wallace and his family have been long-time caregivers to the horses participating in the race as well. He helped establish the misting and water stations that are used to cool the horses during the event. Wallace and his team, which consists of up to 20 volunteers, set up cooling stations at the entry and exit point to the track, as well as at the finish line, since it is vital to regulate the horses’ body temperature.
Without the support of the sport and commitment to the community that these gentlemen, and others like them display, the Iroquois Steeplechase would not be the success it is today. 6 2018 Honorary Co-chairs Have Long History of Community Service

Iroquois Steeplechase is the perfect combina- tion of southern charm and hospitality, with the friendliness and warmth that Nashville is known for, plus all the beauty, pageantry and excitement of jump racing! For nearly 80 years, our race day patrons, loyal fans, and our sponsors have gathered to enjoy the best thoroughbred horses and people watching at the Iroquois Steeplechase on the second Satur- day in May. Most importantly, the Iroquois Steeplechase raises funds to benefit the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and other worthy causes! Thank you to all of our sponsors, staff, volunteers, and race day goers for continuing the tradition and supporting the Iroquois Steeplechase.

In Celebration of the 77th Annual SUPPORT Iroquois Steeplechase - Percy Warner Park THE IROQUOIS
STEEPLECHASE Good Morning Steeplechase Fans,
Benefiting It’s an honor to welcome you to the 77th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase at the iconic Percy Warner Park. This historic race is not only one of the nation’s premier sporting events, but one of the city’s annual rites of spring to benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. We are delighted to host this wonderful event in one of our most historic parks. Percy Warner Park is one of several jewels in our city’s park system. Percy, along with Edwin Warner Park, spans more than 3,000-acres of forest and field and it’s just 9 miles from downtown. Collectively the two parks are known as “the Warner Parks.” Approximately one million people visit the two parks annually to enjoy scenic roadways and overlooks, hiking, biking and horse trails, cross-country running, two golf courses, a dog park, the equestrian center, the always popular Nature Center and more! We believe that we have one of the best park systems in the country, as is evidenced by our many facilities and programs that emphasize healthy lifestyles, recreational opportunities, and environmental education. This is an exciting time of growth for our city and for our department. As more and more people call Nashville home, it strengthens my resolve to uphold our mission to preserve, protect, and restore the natural and historical heritage of the city’s parklands for the perpetual benefit of all our citizens. I hope you will take advantage of the many amenities Metro Parks has to offer. It is known popularly as jump racing because its participants race at speed over a natural course and jump obstacles intermittently placed on the course. All the horses involved in steeplechase racing are Thoroughbreds, meaning that they trace their bloodlines to four foundation sires and are registered with The Jockey Club. Steeplechasing is a much smaller sport than flat racing, which is conducted at tracks such as Churchill Downs. Most steeplechase horses had a career at the flat tracks, and some steeplechase horses have raced in flat-racing classics such as the Kentucky Derby or Belmont Stakes. They are the exceptions, however. Most steeplechase horses had modest flat careers because they lacked sprinter speed and preferred longer distances. In their second careers as steeplechase horses, they excel with a combination of stamina and agility. The National Steeplechase Association, founded in 1895, is the governing body of American jump racing. Its Board of Directors is composed of committed horse owners and race-meet officials, and its full-time staff of four conducts regulatory and administrative functions from Fair Hill, Md.
A DAY AT THE RACES Most steeplechase racing days include five to seven races, though there are exceptions. The Maryland Hunt Cup, contested each spring near Glyndon, Maryland, is so special that it stands alone as the only race on the program. Attendance varies from tailgaters to horsemen, college students to senior citizens. Most spectators arrive a few hours before the first race, (usually 1 P.M.) to start their outing with lunch or conversations with friends. The racing brings excitement, in approximately half-hour increments. As a whole, steeplechasing allows fans to get closer to the sport than flat racing. You can stand right next to a fence, or watch the start of the race, or catch the thrills at the finish line. BY THE NUMBERS $5,998,50...... Purses paid in NSA races in 2017 1,000,000 ......
