The key element of the approach is the geomechanical and geophysical investigations during geological survey in the period of the design works on underground structures’ reconstruction. In particular, geomechanical and geophysical investigations allow assessing the quality of interaction between the rock massif and existing supporting structures, as well as the condition of the existing lining which should be dismantled. Another part of the proposed approach is to take into account the modern idea of the equilibrium state of rock mass which is formed during the long-term operation process of underground structures. Using catches presented by FAO on behalf of the USSR and Russian Federation as a baseline, total removals were estimated by adding estimates of unreported commercial catches, discards at sea, and unreported recreational and subsistence catches. Estimates for ‘ghost fishing’ were also made, but not included in the final reconstructed catch. Total removals by Russia were estimated to be 1.57 times the landings presented by FAO (taking into account USSR-disaggregation), with unreported commercial catches, discards, recreational, and subsistence fisheries representing an additional 30.6 %, 24.7 %, 1.0%, and 0.7 %, respectively. Discards reached their peak in the 1970s and 1980s during a period of intense bottom trawling for sprat that partially contributed to the large-scale fisheries collapse in the 1990s. -

Cooperation in the European Mountains 2: The Caucasus European Programme Established in 1987, the European Programme seeks to identify and analyse the economic and social forces impacting on biodiversity conservation, and apply the power of the constituency to address them. The Programme is active in species and ecosystem-based conservation within the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors and supports regional and global policy analysis and recommendations. IUCN is present in 47 of the 55 countries of the Pan-European region. IUCN's European constituency, 325 governmental and non-governmental members, six expert Commissions, and the Secretariat, provides a broad-based democratic forum for exchanging views, and taking joint action. Over 3,000 experts, organised into six networks (on ecosystem management; education and com- munication; environmental law; environment, economy and society; species survival; and protected areas/Parks for Life), provide scientific weight to the policy formulated and disseminated by the European Programme in seeking to influence societies. Since 1997, the European Programme has been co-ordinated from the IUCN European Regional Office-ERO, (based in Tilburg, The Netherlands).
