CHIEF DAN GEORGE Southeast Area of the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Tansi - Hello and how are you? CHIEF DAN GEORGE 1899 - 1981 A chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, a Coast Salish band whole reserve is located on Burrard Inlet in the southeast area of the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Once again we are called upon as a society to respond to something which has had a global impact.....the killing of George Floyd. Through one of the Indigenous teachings contained in the Medicine Wheel, we come to understand that ALL Nations of the world are created equal. The circle implies that we have an equal voice and that ALL voices matter. The colors of the wheel represent the Nations of people....all races....ALL of us....and together we must solve our problems in a spirit of kindness and solidarity. How? Let each of us, look at our own perceptions of those who are different from us, look into our own hearts and be reminded of Chief George's words..."The heart never knows the color of the skin". Let's be honest with ourselves and have the courage to acknowledge where we can improve and start to make the shift to a level of greater acceptance, greater non-judgement, greater kindness, greater understanding and ultimately, a great love for ALL. Let's give it a try. Maybe we can take that mountain down. Stay positive, strong and healthy.....keep moving forward. Joanne Jingle dress dancers honour George Floyd at site where he was killed "This kind of unity that's bringing people together, it's the kind of thing that's going to help us battle systems of oppression," said Skjefte. The Chief Dan George Story Kit THEKit Introduction CHIEF DAN GEORGE STORY KIT This kit explores the life and legacy of Tsleil-Waututh Chief Dan George and establishes him as a person of historical significance. The kit is based on the in-gallery school program for grades 3 to 5 that the North Vancouver Museum & Archives offered in connection with our 2017-2018 temporary exhibit,Chief Dan George: Actor & Activist, which was developed with the support of the George family. In the kit, we will discuss what historical significance means; students will come to understand how Chief Dan George’s life led him to be a person of historical significance. Archival photos and artifacts (photos of personal belongings) will be analyzed. Through these exercises, students will learn how Chief Dan George influenced Indigenous lives as well as popular perceptions of Indigenous culture. Teachers’ Options: this is a rich kit with many options for use. Teachers may choose to select only one activity or choose to do some or all of the four lessons listed. An article defending the petition states: “With so few movie heroes in the US being people of color, non-white children receive a very different message from Hollywood, one that too often relegates them to sidekicks, villains, or background players.”1 Additional examples of such outcries over recent miscasting include Johnny Depp as Tonto in The Lone Ranger (2013), as well as, to a lesser extent, Benicio Del Toro as Jimmy Picard in Arnaud Desplechins’s Jimmy P.: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian (2013).2 Neither the problem nor the outcry are new. Many studies have shown why the movie industry has often employed non-Indian actors to portray Indian characters.
