The first issue concerned physical and mental health. Presentations covered such topics as: counseling college students concerning their attitudes and beliefs about HIV/AIDS; United States health care reform and how it affects people with disabilities; the psychological impact of chronic illness; and understanding clients' cultural values. The second issue of the symposium concerned issues of physical, emotional, and substance abuse. Presentations included: family abuse in Japan; sexual abuse, alcohol, and women survivors; drug abuse; healing the wounds of child abuse; drug use by U.S. high school students; addiction treatment alternatives; and human development theory in substance abuse counseling. All conference presentations are included. The 36 papers include: (1) "College Students' knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs Regarding HIV/AIDS: A Five County Study"(L. Gray and R. House); (2) "A Whole School Approach to Guidance in Schools in Hong Kong"(B. Yau); and (3)"Drug Use by U.S. High School Students: How It Can Be Reduced"(D. Coy).     Clinical Definition of Child Sexual Abuse The sexual acts that will be described in this section are abusive clinically when the factors discussed in the previous section are present as the examples illustrate. The sexual acts will be listed in order of severity and intrusiveness, the least severe and intrusive being discussed first. Non-contact Acts Offender making sexual comments to the child - Example: A coach told a team member he had a fine body, and they should find a time to explore one another's bodies. He told the boy he has done this with other team members, and they had enjoyed it. Offender exposing intimate parts to the child, sometimes accompanied by masturbation. - Example: A grandfather required that his 6-year-old granddaughter kneel in front of him and watch while he masturbated naked. Voyeurism (peeping). - Example: A stepfather made a hole in the bathroom wall. He watched his stepdaughter when she was toileting (and instructed her to watch him). Offender showing child pornographic materials, such as pictures, books, or movies. - Example: Mother and father had their 6- and 8-year-old daughters accompany them to viewings of adult pornographic movies at a neighbor's house. Once again we are called upon as a society to respond to something which has had a global impact.....the killing of George Floyd. Through one of the Indigenous teachings contained in the Medicine Wheel, we come to understand that ALL Nations of the world ​ ​ ​ are created equal. The circle implies that we have an equal voice and that ALL voices ​ ​ matter. The colors of the wheel represent the Nations of people....all races....ALL of ​ ​ us....and together we must solve our problems in a spirit of kindness and solidarity. How?     The Chief Dan George Story Kit THEKit Introduction CHIEF DAN GEORGE STORY KIT This kit explores the life and legacy of Tsleil-Waututh Chief Dan George and establishes him as a person of historical significance. The kit is based on the in-gallery school program for grades 3 to 5 that the North Vancouver Museum & Archives offered in connection with our 2017-2018 temporary exhibit,Chief Dan George: Actor & Activist, which was developed with the support of the George family. Chief Dan George was an Indigenous community leader here on the North Shore and was well-known as an actor and activist. In the kit, we will discuss what historical significance means; students will come to understand how Chief Dan George’s life led him to be a person of historical significance. Archival photos and artifacts (photos of personal belongings) will be analyzed. Through these exercises, students will learn how Chief Dan George influenced Indigenous lives as well as popular perceptions of Indigenous culture. Teachers’ Options: this is a rich kit with many options for use. Teachers may choose to select only one activity or choose to do some or all of the four lessons listed. Two extension activities are also included.
