Monday 14th September 2020 9.45am at HOLSWORTHY MARKET New Market Road, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 7FA FOREWORD On behalf of Kivells we would like to thank Rodney, Jean and Paul Allin for their kind instructions to disperse their ‘Panhollow’ herd of 500 Pedigree Holstein Friesian dairy cattle at Holsworthy Market on Monday 14th September at Holsworthy Market. The sale of 500 head of Dairy Cattle will be the largest one day sale to have occurred in Devon and Cornwall for some considerable time. Quantity and quality combines to provide this wonderful selection from one holding. When Rodney left school the farm carried 50 cows and followers, 300 sheep, with 140 acres of cereals. For Rodney’s 21st birthday he was given a pedigree heifer calf and over the next few years the existing herd was graded up and a few pedigree animals were purchased. The herd expanded with quality breeding and is entirely homebred. In 1999 the opportunity to acquire the farm from Emma, Col. Molesworth St. Aubyn’s daughter, and the Tetcott Estate arose. Rodney and Jean’s son, Paul, joined the business having completed three years at Bicton College and the family commenced the expansion of the dairy herd.

Deposit Guide Contact: email ‘Goblinlike, Fantastic’: Little People and Deep Time at the Fin De Siècle Emily Fergus Submitted for MPhil Degree 2019 Birkbeck, University of London 2 I, Emily Fergus, confirm that all the work contained within this thesis is entirely my own. ___________________________________________________ 3 Abstract This thesis offers a new reading of how little people were presented in both fiction and non-fiction in the latter half of the nineteenth century. After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world.

Annual disasters and upheavals are standard topics in traditional East Asian chronicles. By June of 2020 (a gengzi 庚子 year), we had already lived through more than our share: the coronavirus pandemic, severe economic downturn, government inaction and prevarication, Princeton’s shift to online teaching, dislocation of undergraduate and graduate life, shuttering of libraries and labs, disruption to travel, study, and research for students, staff, and faculty, the brutal murder of George Floyd, and the international renaissance of the Black Lives Matter movement. invigorate campus intellectual life, completing book This spring semester, the usual hum of summer manuscripts, or starting new projects. The heaviest burden, programming and plans for next academic year grew no doubt, fell on our language instructors.
