Football | Coaching Change Panthers lose defensive line coach Jackson heads to Indiana State

By Scott Richey Sports Editor

Come the 2008 season, Eastern’s defensive line will be missing more than the graduating seniors. Shannon Jackson, Eastern’s defensive coach, will be gone, too. After three seasons with the Pan- thers, Jackson accepted the defen- sive coordinator position Dec. 11 at Indiana State – a move that will return Jackson to his alma mater. Jackson was the first assistant new Indiana State head coach Trent Miles hired. Eastern’s defensive line recorded 174 tackles (28.5 for loss) and nine sacks during Jackson’s first season as defensive line coach at Eastern. The next year, the defensive line improved with 201 tackles and eight sacks. The Panthers defensive line made three straight years of improvement with 245 tackles (44 for loss) and 10 sacks during the 2007 season. Jackson said he took the job at Indiana State because it was a good opportunity to grow as a coach. Being a defensive coordinator had been a dream of his since he was a young coach, he said. “Indiana State football has been a big part of my life,” Jackson said. “Coming home to my alma mater is something that I take great pride in, and I’m excited to be back.” FILE | THE DAILY EASTERN NEWS Eastern defensive coordinator Shannon Jackson (center), stands on the sideline during the 2007 football season.
