CTCS 464: The Romantic Comedy In Classical, Postwar, and Reactionary/Revolutionary Hollywood (1929 – 1976) Summer 2009 (First Session) Monday & Wednesdays 1 p.m to 5:30 p.m. Norris Theater Instructor: Dr. Drew Casper The Alma and Alfred Hitchcock Professor of American Film Course Description: An in-depth analysis the myths, conventions and iconographies of the romantic comedy genre in its Classical, Postwar and Reactionary/Revolutionary periods, this course will explore its extra-cinematic determinants (major historical events, economic situations, societal issues and other popular leisure activities) and cinematic determinants (business, technology, censorship, generic patterns, major directors, the star and the star system). ART DIRECTORS GUILD TO INDUCT THREE ADDITIONAL LEGENDARY PRODUCTION DESIGNERS INTO ITS HALL OF FAME ON FEBRUARY 4, 2012 LOS ANGELES, September 12, 2011 —Three legendary Production Designers will be inducted into the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame at the Guild’s 16th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 4, 2012. The Guild’s Council has named Production Designers Robert Boyle, William Darling and Alfred Junge as its latest Hall of Fame inductees. In making the announcement, ADG President, Thomas A. Walsh, said, “This continues to be a proud moment for our Guild as we look to the past so we may build the bridges to our future. The ADG Hall of Fame recognizes the many achievements of those artists who created and evolved the unique discipline of art direction for the moving image. Their creative legacy continues to inspire and challenge all of those who have chosen the art of production design as their profession and it is appropriate that we honor their memory through their induction into the ADG Hall of Fame.” Nominations for the 16th Annual ADG Awards will be announced on January 4, 2012. On awards night, February 4, the ADG will present winners in nine competitive categories for theatrical films, television productions, commercials and music videos along with the Guild’s lifetime achievement award to production designer Tony Walton and another soon to be announced for Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery. For the third consecutive year Paula Poundstone is set to host this year’s show, which is themed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Guild. -

Academy to Shine Light on "Paramount Glow" 2-2-2-2-2-2 Accompanying the drawings, the exhibition will include final set stills, shooting scripts and scenarios as well as quotes from Dreier and video clips from films that he collaborated on with such directors as Dorothy Arzner, Ernst Lubitsch, William Wellman, Mauritz Stiller, Josef von Sternberg and Rouben Mamoulian. The installation also highlights the work of the artists and designers Dreier oversaw, including that of future art directors Roland Anderson, Franz Bachelin, Ernst Fegte, Wiard Ihnen and Boris Leven. "Hans Dreier was not only an art director of international note but a great teacher who guided his team of designers to meet the needs of human condition in film," said former Academy governor and four-time Oscar®nominee Robert Boyle, an art director who began his career in 1933 as a designer in Dreier's art department. Dreier ran the Paramount art department during an era when every studio had an in-house staff of artists and researchers to guarantee the visual authenticity of its productions. "Those of us who had the great fortune of working under his tutelage are forever grateful for his influence on our lives," added Boyle. Dreier received 22 Academy Award nominations between 1929 and 1950 as well as consideration for "The Patriot" in 1928 (when there were no official nominations). He won Oscars®for art direction for "Frenchman's Creek" (1945), "Sunset Blvd." (1950) and "Samson and Delilah" (1950). Born in Germany, Dreier worked as an architect for the German government as well as with the famed UFA studio in Berlin and EFA, Paramount's European affiliate. -

ART DIRECTORS GUILD TO INDUCT THREE LEGENDARY PRODUCTION DESIGNERS INTO ITS HALL OF FAME AT 19TH ANNUAL EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS JANUARY 31, 2015 LOS ANGELES, October 15 — Three legendary Production Designers – John Gabriel Beckman, Charles Lisanby and Walter H. Tyler – will be inducted into the Art Directors Guild (ADG) Hall of Fame at the Guild’s 19th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 31, 2015, as announced today by ADG Council Chairman John Shaffner and Awards Producers Dave Blass and James Pearse Connelly. In making the announcement Shaffner said, “Beckman, Lisanby and Tyler join an honored and distinguished group of ADG Hall of Famers, whose collective work parallels the best of motion picture and television production design. Their enduring legacy and accomplished mastery of our profession are most worthy, influential, inspiring and welcomed additions.” Nominations for the 19th Annual ADG Excellence in Production Design Awards will be announced on January 5, 2015. The ADG will present winners in 11 competitive categories for theatrical films, television productions, commercials and music videos on awards night, January 31, hosted by Comedian Owen Benjamin. JOHN GABRIEL BECKMAN (1898 – 1989) Award winning Production Designer John Gabriel Beckman was an architect prior to becoming an admired American set designer, art director, production designer and muralist. He worked behind-the-scenes for almost a decade before receiving his first screen credit as an art director for Charlie Chaplin’s 1947 black comedy Monsieur Verdoux (which was screened in May as part of ADG’s Film Society Series). -

La Leyenda de MOVIELAND; Historia del Cine en el Estado de Durango (1897 - 2004) Antonio Avitia Hernández México, 2005 Introducción De manera casi tan fortuita y tan veleidosa como los criterios y las posibilidades económicas de las compañías cinematográficas, de los productores y de los directores de cine, algunos paisajes naturales del estado de Durango han sido seleccionados como escenario del rodaje de diversas películas. Hasta donde se ha podido investigar, entre los años de 1897 a 2004, se han filmado un total de doscientos setenta y ocho (278) cintas en la entidad. De éstas, treinta (30) son de la época del cine silente, producidas entre 1897 y 1936. Noventa y ocho (98) son de formato de ocho, super ocho y dieciséis milímetros, independientes, así como filmes documentales científicos, antropológicos y culturales, entre otros. Con respecto al cine industrial, ciento cincuenta (150) han sido los filmes rodados en territorio durangueño entre los años de 1954 a 2004. Los objetivos principales de esta historia del cine en Durango son: hacer el recuento cuantitativo y cronológico, la ubicación histórica, la reseña de las sinopsis argumentales, las fichas filmográficas y la relación de los personajes y locaciones sobresalientes de las películas rodadas en la entidad, así como describir la impresión que, en el imaginario colectivo regional, ha tenido el cinematógrafo, en tanto séptimo arte e industria cinematográfica. De manera colateral, hasta donde ha sido posible, se hace referencia a la suerte de los filmes en lo que respecta a su distribución. En el primer capítulo El cine silente en Durango se hace el recuento, sinopsis argumental, situación histórica y establecimiento de los treinta filmes del periodo silente rodados en la entidad, desde el arribo de los enviados de Edison en 1897 hasta la cinta documental de propaganda política laudatoria, grabada por encargo del gobernador del estado coronel Enrique R.
