It was created on 12 September 1990 and its bylaws were certified in 1995. GENERAL AIM: The CEDERI aims to improve the socio-economic situation of the rural area with the active participation of the affected population who are the direct beneficiaries. It carries out activities in Madimba and Kasangulu territories in particular. B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

HARRIET TUBMAN SEMINAR York University January 24, 2000 Liberated Central Africans in Nineteenth-Century Guyana1 Monica Schuler Department of History Wayne State University Statistics of the nineteenth century slave trade and liberated African immigration (1841- 1865), while incomplete, show the replacement of a West African by a Central African majority in Guyana, a country comprising the three former Dutch colonies of Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice.2 The ethnic patterns of the Dutch slave trade, which supplied the majority of enslaved Africans until British occupation in 1796, indicate that 29 percent of the Africans on Dutch West India ships and 34 percent on free traders’ ships came from the Loango hinterland in West Central Africa. Of the remainder transported by the Dutch West India Company, 45 percent originated in the Republic of Benin-western Nigeria area known as the Slave Coast, another 21 percent in the Gold Coast interior, and the rest in the Bight of Biafra region and Senegal. The Windward Coast area of present-day Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire provided 49 percent of the free traders’ cargo.3 With British occupation in 1796, Guyana obtained an infusion of capital and over 35,000 additional people from Britain’s legal African or Caribbean slave trade and from the migration of self-employed slave mechanics and hucksters. Owing to increased African importations early in the nineteenth century, Kongo came to outnumber other African groups in Berbice and probably in Demerara and Essequibo as well. To date, the Berbice slave register for 1819 provides the sole available ethnic profile for the late slave era in Guyana. -

(forthcoming) Cross-Gender Identifications in Vodou Roberto Strongman University of California, Santa Barbara The representation of Vodou in Haitian cultural production is replete with cross- gendered subjectivities that many critics have failed to take into account. In Rene Depestre’s novel Hadriana dans tous mes rêves , the protagonist—Hadriana, a white French woman living in Haiti—is turned into a zombi on her wedding day and becomes the leader of a Vodou community. Martin Murno sees in Hadriana’s whiteness “obvious traces of Depestre’s francophilia” (Munro 2007, 127). He also concedes that there might be an element of resistance in Depestre’s idealizaton of Hadriana’s beauty by claiming that Hadriana might embody a “reversal of colonial eroticization of its tropical other” (Munro 2007, 127). What Munro fails to notice, however, is how Hadriana’s aborted marriage begins a non-heteronormative characterization that continues throughout her spiritual evolution. At the outset of the text Hadriana is associated with Nana Buruku, a lwa that is often represented as embodying a primordial androgynous gender. The people of Jacmel, unable to accept that a heart attack brought Nana down to the foot of the altar, used their necrophilic imagination to reinsert their daughter into a fairy tale. Her body’s disappearance from the sepulcher was the catalyst for such a leap from the fear of death into fantasy. 1(Depestre 1988, 98--99) At the end of the novel, she is associated with a male deity of springs: “I was Simbi-the- Spring. -

All power to all the people. ii ABSTRACT The ideological, cultural, and physical means which brought François Duvalier to power in 1957 created a process whereby the state idea became the metonym for all Haitian identity. In what is now called the Roots movement, some people working on the grassroots level began resisting the Duvaliers and asserting a new Haitian identity for themselves. Among the several parts of the movement, people calling themselves sanba-s began experiencing and living according to what they considered “traditional” means, wherefrom they created a new music, mizik rasin. West-Central African Nature Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry
Southeastern Regional Seminar in African Studies (SERSAS) Fall Meeting 27 - 28 October 2000 University of Tennessee, Knoxville West-Central African Nature Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry Ras Michael Brown Dillard University Captives carried from West-Central African ports to the shores of South Carolina arrived in large numbers throughout the duration of the legal and illegal African slave trade, particularly during the years when plantation slavery began to take its familiar form and expand throughout Carolina. These enslaved West-Central Africans played an especially important role in shaping the cultural milieu of the southeastern seaboard. A number of scholars have looked at the influence of West-Central Africans on beliefs and practices in the African- Lowcountry cultural tradition.[1] This paper is part of my contribution to this topic. In particular, I examine the example of nature spirits in South Carolina as reflective of the profound and unique impact that West-Central Africans had on the development of African- Lowcountry culture. I contend that West-Central African nature deities, called simbi spirits in Kikongo, served the enslaved people of the early Lowcountry as spiritual benefactors around which captives of diverse African origins and those born in the Lowcountry built their communities. Simbi Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry: Evidence & Questions In 1843, a geologist in search of marl deposits in the soil of South Carolina recorded in his journal that enslaved people throughout the Lowcountry that water spirits called "cymbees" inhabited certain springs. This early account and later ones from twentieth-century sources also report that African-descended people in the Lowcountry feared the "cymbees," especially in instances when individuals (usually women) tried to draw water or children endeavored to swim in the springs. -

Plant-parasitic nematode incidence, population densities and associated damage were determined from 153 smallholder banana and plantain gardens in Bas Congo (9 – 646 meters above sea level, m.a.s.l) and South Kivu (1043 – 2005 m.a.s.l), Democratic Republic of Congo, during 2010. Based on the frequency of total nematode soil and root extraction, Helicotylenchus multicinctus (89%), Meloidogyne spp. (54%) and Radopholus similis (30%) were the most widespread, while Pratylenchus goodeyi (18%) Helicotylenchus dihystera (18%), Rotylenchulus reniformis (14%), and Pratylenchus spp. (6%) were localized in occurrence. The occurrence and abundance of the nematode species was influenced by altitude:R. similis declined at elevations above 1300 m; P. goodeyi declined at elevations below 1200 m; H. multicinctus and Meloidogyne spp. were found everywhere with higher but non-dominant densities at lower altitudes; Pratylenchus spp. was restricted to lower altitudes; while H. dihystera and R. reniformis were scattered at both low and high altitudes.
