CREATING AN IMAGE: FILM-INDUCED FESTIVALS IN THE AMERICAN WEST Warwick Frost Working Paper 34/06 October 2006 DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT WORKING PAPER SERIES I S S N 1 3 2 7 – 5 2 1 6 Abstract Film and television are major forces in shaping destination image and encouraging tourism visitation. A growing literature reports on how film and television either directly attract tourists or is incorporated into destination marketing campaigns. However, there has been little research examining how film and television may be used in festivals and events and how destinations may actively use such festivals as a medium for creating their destination image. This article considers film-induced festivals in the small American towns of Lone Pine and Jamestown. Both have been extensively used as film locations since the 1920s, primarily for Westerns. Lone Pine has been the location for over 350 films, and Jamestown has been the location for 150 films. Through film-themed festivals, these towns have reshaped their destination images as idealised and romanticised Western locales. In contrast other aspects of their heritage have been downplayed causing some dissonance between stakeholders. This paper is a work in progress. Material in the paper cannot be used without permission of the author. 2 CREATING AN IMAGE: FILM-INDUCED FESTIVALS IN THE AMERICAN WEST INTRODUCTION In Film-induced tourism (2005), Sue Beeton examines how destinations utilise feature films and television to attract tourists. Many destinations incorporate film into their marketing, some develop film-based attractions, but Beeton only records one that has developed a festival based on its film image. -

Webfooters Post Card Club PO Box 17240 Portland OR 97217-0240 www.thewebfooters.com Remembering the Wild, Wild Westerns Before Batman, before Star Trek and space travel to the moon, Westerns ruled prime time television. Warner Brothers stable of Western stars included (l to r) Will Hutchins – Sugarfoot, Peter Brown – Deputy Johnny McKay in Lawman, Jack Kelly – Bart Maverick, Ty Hardin – Bronco, James Garner – Bret Maverick, Wade Preston – Colt .45, and John Russell – Marshal Dan Troupe in Lawman, circa 1958. Westerns became popular in the early years of television, in the era before television signals were broadcast in color. During the years from 1959 to 1961, thirty-two different Westerns aired in prime time. The television stars that we saw every night were larger than life. In addition to the many western movie stars, many of our heroes and role models were the western television actors like John Russell and Peter Brown of Lawman, Clint Walker on Cheyenne, James Garner on Maverick, James Drury as the Virginian, Chuck Connors as the Rifleman and Steve McQueen of Wanted: Dead or Alive, and the list goes on. Western movies that became popular in the 1940s recalled life in the West in the latter half of the 19th century. They added generous doses of humor and musical fun. As western dramas on radio and television developed, some of them incorporated a combination of cowboy and hillbilly shtick in many western movies and later in TV shows like Gunsmoke. -

January - February, 2003 50 Years Ago... by Carla Whalen The lot was humming with activity in Allen, Slim Pickens, Eddy Waller, Roy the years 1952 and 1953. Republic Pictures Barcroft, Rod Cameron, Forrest Tucker, owned the facility, continued to produce Harry Carey, Jr., John Agar and Jim Davis; feature films, and was beginning to enter with cowgirls Mary Ellen Kay, Penny into television production. Republic made Edwards, Marjorie Lord, Estelita Rodriguez forty-six features in ’52 and ’53, of which and Gale Storm. The most famous feature twenty six were westerns starring big B- of this two-year period was The Quiet Man movie cowboys Allan "Rocky" Lane, Rex starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald and Ward Bond. This was shot mostly on distant location in a very rainy Ireland, with the interiors done back here on the lot on what are now Stages #9 and #10. Republic also continued producing the "cliffhanger" serials it was famous for and Bill Williams, Kit Carson produced four 12-episode Chapterplays during 1952-53; Canadian Mounties vs. over three-hundred fifty B-westerns, Atomic Invaders, Radar Men from the Moon, including fifty-six Gene Autry and eighty- Zombies of the Stratosphere and Jungle Drums two Roy Rogers singing cowboy oaters.
