AN IMPORTANT CHARLES II BROAD RIMMED COMMEMORATIVE CHARGER engraved extensively in wriggle-work with the Royal coat-of-arms, cypher and motto, inscribed Vivat Rex Carolus Secumdus Beati Pacifici 1662, the rim engraved similarly with flowerheads and foliage and portrait medallions of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, engraved at the head with the sun and at the base of the rim with the ownership triad SPE, traces of touch mark on the reverse-a portcullis 22in. (56cm.) diam. Cf. A. V. Sutherland-Graeme, Pewter 'Restoration Chargers', June 1942. This article suggests that these chargers, of which about fifteen examples are recorded, were made to commemorate the marriage of Charles IT and Catherine of Braganza in 1662 rather than the previously popular conception that they commemorated the Restoration of the monarchy. There is, however, at least one similar charger (private collection) which was made to commemorate the Restoration and is inscribed accordingly Howard H. Cotterell, Old Pewter. Its Makers and Marks, 1963 ed., plate 53e, illustrates another example although, again, it does not contain the portrait medallions

A similar example sold Sotheby & Co., 25 July 1973, now in the collection of The Worshipful Company of Pewterers (51/100)-see revised edition of Catalogue 1979, page 17, arrd also exhibited at Pewterers Hall, July 1974 Another example sold Sotheby & Co., 13 June 1977 See also R.
