1 Grave Robbers’ Chronicles: The Mystic Nine Written by: Xu Lei Translated by: Tiffany X and Merebear Edited by: Merebear 2 Summary: During the Republic Era, the town of Changsha was guarded by nine families known as the “Old Nine Gates” (or the “Mystic Nine”). They were incredibly powerful families who wielded supreme power over everything in Changsha. In 1933, a mysterious train pulled into Changsha station. The leader of the Nine Gates, Zhang Qishan, was also the army commander of Changsha station and started to investigate with Qi Tiezui. They discovered a highly suspicious mine just outside of Changsha. 3 The Mystic Nine Vol. 1 4 Introduction: About the Mystic Nine The Mystic Nine refers to the nine tomb-robbing families in old Changsha, which are often mentioned in the tomb-robbing notes. They consist of the upper three clans, middle three clans, and lower three clans respectively. Upper Three Clans: 1. Zhang Da Fo Ye (Zhang Qishan)—unknown 2. Er Yuehong—has three sons and taught Chen Pi Ah Si and Xiao Hua 3. Banjie Li—Li Sidi (guess) Middle Three Clans: 4. Chen Pi Ah Si—Chen Wen-Jin 5. Old Dog Wu, Fifth Master Dog—Wu Yiqiong, Wu Erbai, Wu Sanxing— Wu Xie 6. Black Back the Sixth—the only one in the Nine Gates without any offspring Lower Three Clans: 7. Images for Iconoclasts: Images of Confucius in the Cultural Revolution Abstract Confucius died and was buried in 479 B.C.E., and he was never seen again. Or so one would think. “You may forget me as I once was,” Confucius reminds us in the Zhuangzi, "but there is something unforgettable about me that will still live on." Confucius’s physical frame was concealed from sight below ground, but his body and face were not forgotten either by his followers or his detractors, each of whom remembered him (or remembered him) in different ways. People created semblances of Confucius that reflected their own visions of the past, and constructions of his body took on many lives of their own over the succeeding centuries. -

Why these practices emerged is considered in addition to their promotion by the state and reception by practitioners of popular religion. It is demonstrated that cremation became accepted with little fuss for practical, political, and cultural-religious reasons. It is also shown that columbaria, although possessing desirable fengshui, are problematic in that they lack sites for worshiping Houtu and are becoming smoke-free. Green burials, campaigned for by the state and endorsed by ethicists, have been met with resistance because they involve scattering cremated ashes (viewed as harmful and/or disrespectful to the dead) and fail to provide ancestors with permanent places of rest. It shows how, at Burnaby's Ocean View cemetery, the Chinese community moved away from segregation in the burial place and progressed to burial designs that responded to its cultural and religious needs. It analyzes the abandonment by some Chinese immigrants of their tradition of disinterment and repatriation to China, when they chose to be buried there rather than at Vancouver's Mountain View cemetery. It also argues that the Chinese community of the Lower Mainland modified its own burial traditions in a manner different from anywhere else in B.C., as a result of the wave of immigrants from Hong Kong in the 1980s-90s. -

CHAPTER 12 BODIES FOR THE GODS: IMAGE WORSHIP IN CHINESE POPULAR RELIGION Margaret Chan1 THE IMAGE OF THE GODS MAGICALLY APPEARS In mid-September 2007, hundreds of people descended upon the otherwise quiet neighborhood of Street 42, Jurong West, in Singapore. Many were Chinese. They brought bananas, oranges, and packets of peanuts and set the offerings before a tree upon which, as if by miracle, the image of two monkeys had appeared. The Sunday Times newspaper reported on September 16, 2007,2 that a few days earlier an anonymous person had placed a sign on the tree. The sign told that three years ago a monkey had come to the tree in search of its father, the legendary Monkey God.
