Berlin, den 17.12.2002 Jürgen-Fuchs-Straße in Erfurt Am 20. Dezember 02, anläßlich des 52. Geburtstags des Dichters, wird die Straße am Landtag in Erfurt in Jürgen-Fuchs-Straße benannt. Die Stadt Erfurt und der Landtag des Landes Thüringen ehren mit der Benennung einen Poeten, der mit seinen intensiven, leisen Gedichten die Nöte einer DDR-Jugend ausdrückte, die sich in den Zwängen des totalen Anspruches der SED auf die Menschen selbst zu behaupten versuchte. Seine akribische Beobachtung wertete die Realität ohne den erhobenen Zeigefinger des Moralisten. Die real existierenden Sozialisten sperrten ihn dafür ins Gefängnis und schoben ihn vor 25 Jahren in den Westen ab. Der so in eine neue Welt Geworfene konnte nun in seinem Beruf als Psychologe arbeiten und baute gemeinsam mit seiner Frau den "Treffpunkt Waldstraße" im Berliner Problembezirk Moabit auf, einen Heimatort für Jugendliche und Kinder aus schwierigen sozialen Verhältnissen.Jürgen Fuchs' literarisches Werk blieb nicht bei der Beschreibung des sozialistischen Totalitarismus stehen, sondern lotete die Möglichkeiten des Menschseins darin aus. In seiner Geradlinigkeit und seinem unbestechlichen Urteil achtete Fuchs darauf, daß die Aufarbeitung des SED-Unrechts nicht abstrakt blieb, sondern den Menschen in ihrer konkreten Situation gerecht wurde. Dafür ist ihm das Bürgerbüro e.V., zu dessen Gründern er gehörte, dankbar und verpflichtet. Der Weg in den Thüringer Landtag führt zukünftig über eine Straße der Sensibilität für die Nöte der Mitmenschen und des Engagements für die Menschenrechte. Dr. Ehrhart Neubert, amt. 3. IRAN Christian Kracht, 1979 (2001) Popkultur und Fundamentalismus I Den Titel seines Romans hat Christian Kracht gut gewählt. Das Jahr 1979 mar- kiert einen Umschwung in der Wahrnehmung des Orients durch den Westen. Zafer Şenocak, ein Grenzgänger zwischen den Kulturen, schreibt dazu: Bis 1979 – dem Jahr der islamischen Revolution im Iran – spielte der Islam auf der Weltbühne keine politisch herausragende Rolle. Er war bestenfalls tiefenpsycholo- gisch wirksam, als hemmender Faktor bei Modernisierungsbestrebungen in den muslimischen Ländern, im Zuge der Säkularisierung der Gesellschaft, beiseite ge- schoben von der westlich orientierten Elite dieser Länder. In Europa wurden die Gesichter des Islam zu Ornamenten einer sich nach Abwechslung und Fremde seh- nenden Zivilisation. Das Fremde im Islam war Identitätsspender, Kulminations- punkt von Distanzierung und Anziehung zugleich.1 Im Iran kündigten sich 1975 die ersten Unruhen an, als Schah Pahlavi das beste- hende Zweiparteiensystem auflöste und nur noch seine sogenannte Erneuerungs- partei zuließ.2 Oppositionsgruppen gab es aber nach wie vor, und die andauernde 01Zafer Şenocak, War Hitler Araber? Letzteres Buch versteht sich als Kritik an ersterem: Keshavarz wirft Nafisi eine Simplifizierung im Sinne des Opfer-Täter- Schemas und Reduktionismus vor. -

German culture after 1945 has been preoccupied by the memory of war, National Socialism, and the Holocaust; debates among historians are front-page news, particularly the Historians’ Debate of the 1980s and the Goldhagen debate of the 90s. Literature and film have been important vehicles for the process of Vergangenheitsbewältigung, or coming to terms with the past, and we will discuss texts that both portray and perform acts of memory. We will examine various strategies of remembering and memorializing the past, always asking what the significance of memory is for the present and future. Furthermore, we will examine a range of memory cultures, considering memories of the 1950s “economic miracle,” the 60s student movement and 70s radicalism, and the GDR and its demise, all of which coexist (and compete) with memories of the war and the Holocaust in the same cultural space. No expertise in spoken or written German is required for participation in the course. However, students majoring in German will be expected to read texts in the original German. -

Forbidden Fruit Civil Savagery in Christian Kracht’s Imperium “Ich war ein guter Gefangener. Ich habe nie Menschenfleisch gegessen.” I was a good prisoner. I never ate human flesh. These final words of Christian Kracht’s second novel, 1979, represent the last shred of dignity retained by the German protagonist, who is starving to death in a Chinese prison camp in the title year. Over and over, Kracht shows us a snapshot of what happens to the over-civilized individual when civilization breaks down. Faserland’s nameless narrator stands at the water’s edge, preparing to drown rather than live with his guilt and frustration; even the portrait of Kracht on the cover of his edited volume Mesopotamia depicts Kracht himself in a darkened wilderness, wearing a polo shirt and carrying an AK-47. In each of these moments, raw nature inspires the human capacity for violence and self-destruction as a sort of ironic antidote to the decadence and vacuity of a society in decline. Kracht’s latest novel, Imperium, further explicates this moment of annihilation. The story follows the fin-de-siècle adventures of real-life eccentric August Engelhardt, a Nuremberger who wears his hair long, promotes nudism, and sets off for the German colony of New Guinea in hopes of founding a cult of sun-worshippers and cocovores (i.e., people who subsist primarily on coconuts). Engelhardt establishes a coconut plantation near the small town of Herbertshöhe, where he attempts to practice his beliefs in the company of a series of companions of varying worth and, finally, in complete solitude. -

Literatur, Politik&Biographie aus unserer Nachbarschaft Lesungen 2017: Lesung über Gottfried Benn Autoren-Leseabend mit Holger Hof am Dienstag, 4. April 2017, 19.00 Uhr, Wahlkreisbüro Gottfried Benn (1886-1956) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der literarischen Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er schrieb Gedichte, Dramen, Erzählungen und Essays. Besonders bekannt sind seine Gedichtbände (z. B. „Fleisch“ 1917), die stark expressionistisch geprägt sind. Benn hat neben seiner literarischen Tätigkeit immer auch als Arzt gearbeitet. Seit 1904 lebte Benn (mit einigen Unterbrechungen) in Berlin, von 1937 bis zu seinem Tod 1956 befand sich seine Wohnung mit der Arztpraxis in der Bozener Straße 20 in Schöneberg (nah an der Grenze zu Wilmersdorf). Den Gottfried-Benn-Abend gestaltet Holger Hof. Er lebt als freier Autor in Berlin und gilt als einer der kompetentesten Benn-Experten. Über Benn hat er u.a. eine Biografie geschrieben und eine Bildbiografie erstellt, zudem hat er den Briefwechsel mit Ernst Jünger herausgegeben. Über die Lese-Reihe: Der Berliner Westen, von der Kantstraße bis zum Bayerischen Platz, war vor allem in der Weimarer Republik die bevorzugte Wohngegend von Berliner Literaten. Viele Autorinnen und Autoren, die schon berühmt waren oder später berühmt wurden, haben hier gewohnt. Zu nennen sind vor allem Gottfried Benn, Walter Benjamin, Heinrich Mann, Else Lasker-Schüler, Anna Seghers, Kurt Tucholsky und Else Ury. Sie alle wohnten in Wilmersdorf oder Charlottenburg. Scrogin, B. A. Denton, Texas August, 1975 10 Scrogin, Mary R., The Kafka Protagonist as night Errant and Scapegoat. Master of Arts (English), August, 1975, 136 pp., bibliography, 34 titles. This study presents an alternative approach to the novels of Franz Kafka through demonstrating that the Kafkan protagonist may be conceptualized in terms of mythic arche- types: the knight errant and the pharmakos. These complementary yet contending personalities animate the Kafkan victim-hero and account for his paradoxical nature. The widely varying fates of Karl Rossmann, Joseph K., and K. are foreshadowed and partially explained by their simultaneous kinship and uniqueness.
