Resumen: Los bosques de hualo (Nothofagus glauca), endémicos de Chile, han sido impac- tados por procesos antrópicos, como la sustitución por plantaciones exóticas de pino insigne (Pinus radiata). La diversidad de coleópteros epigeos en bosques de hualo, altamente sensi- bles a los cambios ha sido escasamente documentada. Se evalúo la diversidad estacional de coleópteros epigeos en tres hábitats (bosques de hualo, plantaciones de pino y formaciones mixtas de pino-hualo) en la zona de Constitución, Chile central. Durante la primavera y ve- rano, en tres rodales maduros de cada hábitat, se establecieron al azar tres transectos lineales de 100 m y se instalaron 10 trampas de intercepción cada 10 m. -

Lizot (1977) argues that it has been wrongly supposed, without taking into account regional variations, that game resources and protein supplies are limited in the Amazonian forests. He suggests from a study of two local groups of Yanomami, the Karohi and the Kakashiwë, that food requirements are satisfied by a very moderate amount of work and that variations in the level of consumption depend more on attitudes toward work than on the supply of game. -

Chapter 4 Chapter 4 CENTRAL AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN ISLANDS Overview There are few reports of insect consumption by people in the Central American countries. This is surprising in view of the heavy use of edible insects in Mexico to the north and in Colombia to the south. There has been much research in E1 Salvador in recent years, however, on the use of dipterous larvae for recycling animal and other organic wastes into high-protein feed for animals, particularly poultry. The use of insects as food was apparently widespread in the West Indies prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Martyr (1612: 121 f.) stated (vide Bodenheimer 1951: 25) that "in the houses of the inhabitants they found great chests and baskets made of twigs and leaves, which were full of grasshoppers, crickets, crabs, crayfish and snails, together with locusts which destroy the fields of corn, all dried and salted. The Indians explained that they kept these insects to sell to their inland neighbours." Cowan (1865: 98) provides a more literal translation of the above by Martyr. Martyr (p. 274; vide Bodenheimer, p. 301) mentioned that "young bees" [presumably larvae and/or pupae] are eaten "raw, roasted and sometimes soaked." According to Rouse (1948: 524), the Arawak, who inhabited the West Indies before the European arrival, occasionally ate insects. The genus Hypocephalus was first proposed by M. Desmarest, 11 in Guerin's " Magasin tie Zoologie for 1832 (vol. 1, pi. 24), being founded upon a most anomalous beetle of large size from the province of the mines in the interior of Brazil, whose natural rela- tions have perplexed all subsequent entomologists. The insect is described in detail, and outline figures are given of the dorsal and lateral aspect of the insect, with a front and side view of the head and figures of the palpi detached. My figure 2 is copied from Desmarest's figure of his insect seen from above. Five years afterwards, Gistl, a German entomologist, unac- quainted with Desmarest's figure, published another description and figure of evidently the same insect, in the first number of his " Faunus," under the name of Mesoclastus paradoxus, forming it into a new and distinct family of the Pentamerous Coleoptera, named Xenomorphse.
