Barking lord it over Southend Manor

Barking moved to within five points of the Essex Senior League title with victory over Southend Manor at Mayesbrook Park.

Blues moved to 87 points following their latest success, with six games remaining, while third- placed rivals Clapton were held to a draw by West Essex and can now only reach a maximum of 92 if they win their last five fixtures.

And table-topping Barking have a vastly superior goal difference of plus-72 to Clapton’s plus-28 as the season draws to a close.

Both sides battled against windy conditions in a physical first half, which ended goalless.

But Barking broke the deadlock midway through the second half when Billy Rix headed home on 66 minutes and doubled their lead when top scorer James Peagram teed up Petrit Elbi.

Manor had a chance to hit back when they were awarded a penalty, but Rob Hatton saved the spot-kick and Joe Staunton put the icing on the cake with a backheeled finish in the third minute of stoppage time.

Blues will now turn their attentions to the league cup and a trip to Sawbridgeworth on Tuesday, before returning to league action to host Eton Manor next weekend.

THE F A VASE AND TROPHY FINALS

The F A Vase Final at Wembley on Sunday 21st May 2017 will be between South Shield currently second in the Northern League behind North Shields and Cleethorpes Town leading the Northern Counties East League with games in hand. Kick Off is at 12.15 but sadly for us here in the ESL, there will be no Danny Cowley at Wembley this year as his Lincoln City side went of the F A Trophy at semi final stage to York City who now meet Macclesfield Town, that game following the Vase Final.

Reserves Division Clapton pay penalty; Bishop's Stortford v Sawbridgeworth Town London Bari hit back Tuesday 21st March 2017

Premier Division Clapton 1 West Essex 1 Enfield 1893 v West Essex Redbridge v Basildon United Clapton saw their fading Essex Senior League title hopes hit after a tale of two penalties at the League Challenge Cup – 3rd Round Old Spotted Dog. Sawbridgeworth Town v Barking Tons took the lead in front of a crowd of 356 as Wednesday 22nd March 2017 Stefan Nielsen fired home from the spot on 35 minutes, but West Essex were back on terms Premier Division before the break as Loe Lefley also converted a Ilford v Tower Hamlets penalty. Wadham Lodge v Eton Manor And despite late pressure from the home side in Saturday 25th March 2017 the second half, they could not force a winner and had to settle for a share of the spoils which Premier Division leaves them in third place, 10 points behind Barking v Eton Manor leaders Barking and having played one game Barkingside v Haringey & Waltham more. Basildon United v Redbridge Burnham Ramblers v Wadham Lodge Tons have a game in hand on second-placed FC Enfield 1893 v Ilford Romania, whom they trail by a single point, and Sawbridgeworth Town v Clapton travel to Sawbridgeworth next weekend. Southend Manor v Tower Hamlets Sporting Bengal United v Takeley Lanre Vigo tweeted: “Disappointing result today, wish we got the winn. Thank you for coming out Reserves Division today @ClaptonUltras @claptonfcnews.” Barking v AFC Sudbury Hullbridge Sports v Stansted Clapton: Olajide, Vigo, Spencer, Payne, Ebengo, Thurrock v Bishop's Stortford Sardinha, Jairette, Cook, Reed, Ashman, Nielsen. Waltham Abbey v Redbridge Subs used: Egbejale, Morris, Nugoya. Unused: Takeley v Barkingside Mokwa, Bouho.

Hullbridge Sports 1 London Bari 1

London Bari hit back for a hard-earned point against Hullbridge at Lower Road. Play was held up for 17 minutes in the first half after the referee suffered an injury and, although Bari had chances to take the lead, the scoreline remained blank at the break.

The hosts got their noses in front 15 minutes from time, when substitute Ryan Wallington slotted calmly home just three minutes after joining the action. But Bari bounced back on 86 minutes when Hassan Nalbant netted from a free-kick and only a good block from Aaron Hunwicks and goalline clearance from Rob Hodgson denied the visitors a late winner as honours finished even.

The point leaves Bari in 17th place with just two fixtures remaining, but they now face a 21-day break until visiting east London rivals Tower Hamlets on April 8, before ending their campaign at Barkingside on Good Friday (April 14).

Bari: Akbas, O’Hara, Abdellaziz, Nicholson, Mpalampa, Shagari, Adesina, Morson, Nalbant, Appiah, Grassi. Subs: Williams, Figueroa, Wilcox, Decker, Cookey.
