  • MORETON CORBET Written Primarily by Barbara Coulton 1989
MORETON CORBET Written primarily by Barbara Coulton 1989 EARLY HISTORY There has been a settlement at Moreton at least since Saxon, even Roman times and it lies on the Roman road from Chester to Wroxeter. The Domesday Book (1086) records that Moreton was held by Thorold, from whom it was held by Hunning and his brother since before 1066. Another Saxon family, that of Thoret, came to have Moreton, under Robert fitz Turold. In the time of his descendant, Peter fitz Toret, the chapel at Moreton - a subsidiary of the church of St Mary at Shawbury (a Saxon foundation) - was granted, with St Mary's and its other chapels, to Haughmond Abbey, c. 1150. The north and south walls of the present church may date back to this time. Charters of Haughmond were attested by Peter fitz Toret and his sons, the second of whom, Bartholomew, inherited Moreton Toret, as it was then known. Witnesses to a charter of 1196 include Bartholomew de Morton and Richard Corbet of Wattlesborough, a small fortress in the chain guarding the frontier with Wales. He was a kinsman of the Corbets of Caus Castle, barons there from soon after the Norman conquest; Richard Corbet held Wattlesborough from his kinsman, owing him knight service each year, or when a campaign made it necessary. Richard Corbet married Bartholomew's daughter Joanna, heiress of Moreton, and their son, another RICHARD CORBET, inherited both Wattlesborough and Moreton. He married Petronilla, Lady of Booley and Edgbolton; their son ROBERT CORBET was of full age and in possession of his estates by 1255.

The county was contested during the First Civil War of 1642-6 and also saw armed conflict on a smaller scale during the Second Civil War of 1648. This detailed study provides a comprehensive bipartisan analysis of military endeavour, in terms of organisation and of the engagements fought. Drawing on numerous primary sources, it explores: leadership and administration; recruitment and the armed forces; military finance; supply and logistics; and the nature and conduct of the fighting.

Its builders at this time were a new branch of the Corbet family whose principal seat was Moreton Corbet Castle near Shawbury. To celebrate the founding of this line - or perhaps to gloss over its newness - the mansion was conceived on a grand scale. However, the building we see txxlay is only a fraction of what once stood there and what remains of it - and indeed what doesn't - has experienced a particularly complex history. Its first 150 years are punctuated by restless change and adaptation. The hall was initially built in timber-frame. Then in the early 17m century, it was rebuilt in brick and stone with a number of additions. After a quieter interlude, it experienced a considerable trauma in the first decade or so of the IS· century when approximately a third of the structure, in the form of a wing, was pulled down.

Sidney Dwight Root, 1824-1894: A Yankee by Birth, A Rebel at Heart by Sharon Gayle Conner Whitney Copyright 2007 Sharon Gayle Conner Whitney All rights reserved. This book is dedicated to the Root family. Sidney Dwight Root, 1824-1894: A Yankee by Birth, A Rebel at Heart Acknowledgements I want to thank my first cousin, once removed, Carol Root Smeltzer, and my second cousin, once removed, Mary Lett Root Robertson, for their prior works compiling and editing materials relevant to the Root Family stories. Carol lives in El Paso de Robles, San Luis Obispo County, CA. Mary Lett now lives in Knoxville, TN. Carol I see in CA on occasion. Mary Lett I've just recently connected via telephone. Carol published recently Hannah: A Woman of Spirit and Heart (2006), which is inspired by the 1880s California homesteader life of Hannah Josephine Fosgate, on Estrella Plains, CA, east of Paso Robles. Hannah married John Edgar, an Irish adventurer. They were the parents of Florence Edna Edgar, who married George Francis Root. Mary Lett is listed in Who's Who of Librarians and Information Services (1987). When I spoke to her on the telephone, Mary Lett seemed to think the life of SDR after the Civil War became a matter of concern to his brother, Moses Root. She said this branch of the family has become "lost" to the rest of us. She seemed happy to learn that the Atlanta Historical Society has some archived materials, and surprised that they included letters written to SDR by Mrs. Jefferson Davis, which thanked him for his help in getting the legislature to provide her with a pension.

  • William Hazledine, Shropshire Ironmaster and Millwright
WILLIAM HAZLEDINE, SHROPSHIRE IRONMASTER AND MILLWRIGHT: A RECONSTRUCTION OF HIS LIFE, AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING, 1780 - 1840 by ANDREW PATTISON A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY Ironbridge Institute Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity, College of Arts and Law, University of Birmingham October 2011 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The name of William Hazledine (1763 – 1840) is almost unknown, even to industrial historians. This is surprising, since he provided the ironwork for five world ‘firsts’, and he was described at the time of his death as ‘the first [foremost] practical man in Europe’. The five structures are Ditherington Flax Mill, Shrewsbury (the first iron- framed building in the world), Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (still one of the longest and highest in Britain), lock gates on the Caledonian Canal, a new genre of cast-iron arch bridges, and Menai Suspension Bridge. This thesis aims to rediscover Hazledine’s life and work, and place it in the context of social and industrial history. It particularly concentrates on the development of cast iron technology in Shropshire, which has been less studied than the work of earlier ironmasters, such as the Darbys and John Wilkinson.
