Lastly, my own little family has suffered and sacrificed in so many ways in order to support me through the process of writing of this paper. When one adds it all up, “help” is too small a word for all that he’s given. ii Abstract This paper will examine the historical representations of Native people in public venues in the Seattle area, and will especially focus on representations in the last century. How did past representations serve the settler-state? How have recent revisions changed Native-settler relations? Are these revisions powerful enough to effect any significant change to the injustices that challenge the persistence and sovereignty of Native political entities? By performing a textual and contextual analysis of public commemorative activities, museum exhibits, historic monuments and markers, this paper will investigate the way Seattle’s material culture has been preserved and mobilized for heritage tourism, paying particular attention to the ways that representations of Native people have changed over time. This thesis presents an analysis of Copland's first major serial work, the Quartet for Piano and Strings (1950), using pitch-class set theory and tonal analytical techniques. The first chapter introduces Copland's Piano Quartet in its historical context and considers major influences on his compositional development. The second chapter takes up a pitch-class set approach to the work, emphasizing the role played by the eleven-tone row in determining salient pc sets. Chapter Three re-examines many of these same passages from the viewpoint of tonal referentiality, considering how Copland is able to evoke tonal gestures within a structural context governed by pc-set relationships. The fourth chapter will reflect on the dialectic that is played out in this work between pc-sets and tonal elements, and considers the strengths and weaknesses of various analytical approaches to the work.

An elaborate sprinkler system of the most approved and efficient type . is practically an absolute guarantee against serious damage by fire. The management solicits an inspection at any time." Development Western Mill, early 1890s, at the south end of Lake Union and the principal employer for the greater Cascade neighborhood Development accelerated after David Denny built the Western Mill in 1882, near the site of today’s Naval Reserve Center, and cut a barrier at Montlake to float logs between the lakes. Homes soon began to appear on the Lake Union’s south shore, ranging from the ornate Queen Anne-style mansion built by Margaret Pontius in 1889 (which served as the “Mother Ryther Home” for orphans from 1905 to 1920) to humble worker's cottages.     Chief Seattle's Speech HistoryLink.org Essay 1427 By Walt Crowley, June 28, 1999 In addition to his namesake city, Chief Seattle (178?-1866) is best remembered for a speech given, according to pioneer Dr. Henry Smith, on the occasion of an 1854 visit to Seattle of Isaac Stevens (1818-1862). Stevens was governor and Commissioner of Indian Affairs of Washington Territory. He visited in January and again in March 1854. Chief Seattle's speech went unnoted in the written record until October 29, 1887, when the Seattle Sunday Starpublished a text reconstructed from admittedly incomplete notes by Dr. Smith. Smith rendered his memory of Chief Seattle's speech in the rather ornate (to modern ears) English of Victorian oratory. Chief Seattle would have given the speech in the Lushootseed language, which then would have been translated into Chinook Indian trade language, and then into English. Smith's text is a necessarily filtered version of the speech and was certainly embellished by him. Smith's reconstruction lacks corroboration in the written record, but it is far from implausible. Seattle was well respected among his own people and settlers as a powerful and eloquent orator in his native tongue. It is likely that he was present to meet Governor Stevens in January 1854. Stevens' assistant George Gibbs noted his presence during the March 11, 1854 meeting. Also, there are several accounts in pioneer records of Chief Seattle giving speeches to large crowds. Frederick James Grant included Smith's text in his 1891 History of Seattle, Washington and Clarence B. Bagley reprinted a slightly altered version in his 1929 History of King County, Washington(Vol.

In the vicinity of the Duwamish River and Elliott Bay where in 1851 the first U.S. settlers began building log cabins, the Duwamish tribe occupied at least 17 villages. The first non-Natives to settle the area were farmers who selected their claims on the Duwamish River on September 16, 1851.

Voorhees Authors Note: Before Don died he asked me to say a few words at his memorial service about Discovery Park. After his death July 7, 1989, Anne Voorhees asked me to help in a different capacity. This is the speech I wrote and later used at a Friends of Discovery Park memorial service and in a letter to the editor. Discovery Park is his park—that we all agree. He felt that Seattle would be known for this Park—like London is known for Hyde Park; Vancouver for Stanley Park; San Francisco for Golden Gate Park and New York for Central Park. It was a difficult task. The Department of Defense wanted an anti-ballistic missile base and the ABM headquarters for the entire West Coast located here. Native Americans claimed the property. We didn’t have enough money to buy the land and no federal law allowed excess property to be given for parks and recreation. A golf initiative proposed an 18-hole course. And Metro had its own plans for the Park’s beach. The missile base was moved. A treaty was signed. A federal law was passed. The golf initiative failed. And even Metro studied an off-site solution first suggested by Don. He named the park “Discovery” partly after Capt. George Vancouver’s ship. But even more “because when our children walk this park, discoveries will unfold for them at every turn.” History, beauty, nature and the future are melded here.

In addition the Central Area‟s development was not part of a unified real state scheme with coordinated public improvements (such as the Mount Baker community). For these reasons, it has never had official boundaries and various writers describe its extent in various ways. Almost all attempts to describe the neighborhood include a core area bounded by Madison Street on the north, Jackson Street on the south, 15th Avenue on the west, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (formerly Empire Way) on the east. In 1975, Nyberg and Steinbrueck identified the eastern boundary of the Central Area as 30th Avenue (more or less), and also included extensions to the north and south of the core area. The extension to the south of Jackson Street was bounded by 30th Avenue (approximately) on the east, Interstate 90 on the south, and the mid-block alley just east of Rainier Avenue South on the west. The extension to the north of Madison Street was bounded on the west by 23rd Avenue, on the east by the Washington Park Arboretum, and extended north to a line just north of East Helen Street marking the boundary between the plats known as the Madison Park Addition and the Hazelwood Addition Supplemental.1 Walt Crowley describes the neighborhood as a “sprawling residential district .
