TheTrudi Forum Humphreys was kindly Mole Creekhosted by the Mole Creek Memorial Hall Committee and 60-70 people attended.

1. WELCOME by Ken Philpott, Chair of Mole Creek Memorial Hall Committee 2. PURPOSE: Patrick Gambles outlined the aim and format of the Community Forums initiative 3. INTRODUCTIONS: Councillors and Council officers introduced themselves 4. PRESENTATIONS: members of the Mole Creek Progress Association presented the following:

Suzie: • Community development and improvement projects • 30 members, approx. 10 active • Over the years, caravan park, swimming pool, online centre • Advocate for residents and tourists • Facilitate communication amongst community groups • Maintaining and developing public space

Jennie • Park and recreation space in planning by community with playground • Hoping to gain financial/technical input from Council • 14 July – community meeting to get more ideas • Have gathered quotes from playground companies. Want to do something different that reflects Mole Creek

Martins Spoke about the playground concept utilising local materials/industries/workforce • Play here is different to the cities • Must still be to Australian standard

Kim • History walk • Will encourage people to stop in Mole Creek • Equipment pertaining to the history of Mole Creek along a meandering walk with appropriate signage • Would also like to do a fire pit and • Have a Colonial Day each year • Will mostly be done by community but will need some financial assistance for signage and some ‘cut outs’ of people and animals • Not fenced off so people can touch • Will be ongoing over a couple of years to create

5. COUNCIL SERVICES: Patrick spoke about some free resources from Council • Community grants up to $3,000 all year round • Help with forward planning for your organisation • Community Directory • Community Newsletter • Youth programs

A Carer Excited to have a new bridge but access to river has been cut off Used to take elderly to river but cannot do now Nigel Scott response: Owns the land Provided a stile for access That’s why the fence is there

Darren: Bendigo Bank opening a 2nd grant round at end of July

Raymond: Drainage at Cemetery needs attention If burying, have to pump out water Matthew Millwood response: Will review and get some advice Raymond cont: Road protection barriers Nothing to prevent cars going over near Mayberry and Derwie? House Matthew Millwood response: Matter for Department of State Growth

Raymond cont: Grass cutting sometimes around Christmas needs to be more often

Michal: Needs centre marking on road on way to Kentish Large trucks cut the corners

Nigel Scott: 62 year resident Why pay a waste fee of $400 and also pay when go to tip? Owns multiple properties Why have to pay twice? Martin Gill response: Explained MVC has tip that has landfill and waste levy goes towards rectification

Community member : Tip is only open twice a week Can only get there on Sunday if work all week Community member - Railings on Liena and Union Bridge screws are not secure People stop to watch platypus on bridge. Sign was put up for children to walk only on one side of the bridge. Need a safe place for people to view the platypus Martin Gill response: Encouraged people to write to Council regarding what is needed

Advised that he had provided info to Council prior to construction Martin Gill response: Advised of the significant bridge cost $1.1 million due to unexpected depth of piles and over run of costs due to underground cave

Cr Synfield : Spoke about an alternative location for bridge that was not supported TRAP committee working with Kimberley for entry/gateway to town improvements Planning to also talk to Mole Creek community next

Darren: What is Council’s view about attracting people to Mole Creek, Deloraine etc. given the attraction at ? Martin Gill response: Good numbers travel through but don’t seem to stop The Mole Creek community ideas start to address this Lobbying for the route to be a ‘journey drive’ with Tourism Hoping that sealing of Highland Lakes Road will be an alternative route

Cr Deb White: A member of Council’s Sustainable Environment Committee Has registered for Plastic Free July Deloraine shopkeepers also interested Encouraged community members to have a go Talked about ‘Keep Cups in cafes

Cr Synfield: Has been working on a proposal for a Greater Western Tiers tourist route to become a circuit - forming ‘tear drop’ route Also a 2nd Encouraging people to stay a night or two

Cr Tanya King : Plastic Free July is free to participate Inspired by the vision and plethora of ideas that has been raised tonight Encouraged to check Bendigo Bank and the Tasmanian Community Fund for grant opportunities

Cr Michael Kelly : Asked about the longevity of the Primary School Community member response: The School has recently received $250,000 for the kindergarten

7. IN CONCLUSION Mayor Craig Perkins thanked everyone for their attendance and positive contributions. He encouraged engagement with Tourism Tasmania and asked for community stories that he could pass on to the Examiner and MV Gazette.

Ken then introduced the new audio/visual equipment: • “Magic above and below” • Captures the wonderful place here • So many walks and opportunities to encourage people here • Mole Creek also won an award from Tidy Towns • Has also started Mole Creek markets which has helped maintain this Hall • Kris Eade at Council is very helpful • Sibelco is also a sponsor • Have put in a movie & sound system • 14 July movie - $5 entry • Plan to have a monthly movie • Local movie Mole Creek Stories demonstrated the new system

A fine supper (with lively conversation) followed – kindly provided by the Mole Creek Hall Committee
