NST City 7:45 pm Sun 4th Nov - SO:Write Book Launch with Writers in Residence Nazneen Ahmed, Iain Morrison, SO:Write Women and Mayflower Young Writers Welcome to SO: To Speak 2018 It’s a great pleasure to curate this special weekend of activity, celebrating writers and writing in partnership with John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton, NST, and Southampton Cultural Development Trust from the heart of the Cultural Quarter at Studio 144. As we work towards establishing Southampton as a City of Literature, it’s important to recognise how Creative Writing fills the lives of people in this city, from grassroots levels through to publication and performance. With this in mind, SO: To Speak 2018 celebrates new voices emerging from the SO:Write project alongside more established names from around the UK. From Friday through to Sunday our programme offers something for everyone with performances from the local community alongside some of the UK’s hottest poetic property. We’re delighted to welcome Burning Eye Books, Penned in the Margins, and Nine Arches Press to John Hansard Gallery, along with special guests including hip hop legend and musical maestro, Dizraeli who will be topping the bill in the NST Studio. None of this would be possible without the hard work of our volunteers and the team working behind the scenes to ensure SO: To Speak runs as smoothly as possible. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s event happen, and in particular, to Arts Council England for their continued support. We hope you enjoy the show. Matt West ArtfulScribe For more information visit www.sotospeak2018.co.uk Thanks are due to University of Southampton, NST, John Hansard Gallery and Southampton Cultural Development Trust for support, and Arts Council England/Southampton Festivals for funding. SO:Write is a two-year literature development initiative managed by ArtfulScribe and generously funded by Arts Council England with support from Apples and Snakes, ArtfulScribe, John Hansard Gallery, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton Libraries, Southampton Cultural Development Trust, Nuffield Southampton Theatres, and University of Southampton. SO: To Speak Engagement Symposium Date: Friday 2 November 2018 Time: 2pm – 5pm Tickets available in advance from nstheatres.co.uk Location: NST City, 142-144 Above Bar Street, Southampton, SO14 7DU. This Symposium, exploring literary cultures and barriers to engagement, is delivered in partnership between University of Southampton’s English Department and ArtfulScribe. The event will raise and discuss issues regarding barriers to engagement with live literature, featuring invited key note speakers, panel discussions, and opportunities for audiences to contribute to the debate through floor discussions. This event will be in two parts. Part A, hosted by University of Southampton, will explore how literary cultures have developed in other cities with a view to sharing ideas and examples of good practice that might be considered as Southampton moves forward and raises its profile as a city of literature. Part B, hosted by ArtfulScribe, will consider access issues affecting engagement by disabled people, the deaf community, and marginalised voices from other sectors of society. The symposium will close with a summation by University of Southampton and ArtfulScribe of the afternoon’s session, along with considerations for ‘next steps’ for festival and event organisers looking to ensure inclusivity applies to all who wish to engage in live literature events but who may otherwise face access issues. Join Iain Morrison, Writer in Residence for John Hansard Gallery, for a free writing workshop exploring different approaches to creating a written response to artwork, using selected pieces from the Time after Time exhibition. Time After Time is curated by Professor Stephen Foster and reflects on the Gallery’s history and programmes. Bridging both its previous and new city centre homes, this exhibition re-examines some key site-specific installations that were shown at the Gallery between 1993 and 2016 by artists Caroline Bergvall, Victor Burgin, Hamad Butt, John Latham, Charlotte Posenenske, alongside a new work by Walter van Rijn. Time After Time examines the long-term value of temporary or transient works. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Repository@Napier An autoethnography of Scottish hip-hop: identity, locality, outsiderdom and social commentary Dave Hook A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Edinburgh Napier University, for the award of Doctor of Philosophy June 2018 Declaration This critical appraisal is the result of my own work and includes nothing that is the outcome of work done in collaboration except where specifically indicated in the text. It has not been previously submitted, in part or whole, to any university or institution for any degree, diploma, or other qualification. Signed:_________________________________________________________ Date:______5th June 2018 ________________________________________ Dave Hook BA PGCert FHEA Edinburgh i Abstract The published works that form the basis of this PhD are a selection of hip-hop songs written over a period of six years between 2010 and 2015. The lyrics for these pieces are all written by the author and performed with hip-hop group Stanley Odd. The songs have been recorded and commercially released by a number of independent record labels (Circular Records, Handsome Tramp Records and A Modern Way Recordings) with worldwide digital distribution licensed to Fine Tunes, and physical sales through Proper Music Distribution. Considering the poetics of Scottish hip-hop, the accompanying critical reflection is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. The significance of the writing lies in how the pieces collectively explore notions of identity, ‘outsiderdom’, politics and society in a Scottish context. Further to this, the pieces are noteworthy in their interpretation of US hip-hop frameworks and structures, adapted and reworked through Scottish culture, dialect and perspective.

  • The New Aural Actuality: an Exploration of Music, Sound And
THE NEW AURAL ACTUALITY: AN EXPLORATION OF MUSIC, SOUND AND MEANING IN THE COMPOSED FEATURE DOCUMENTARY PODCAST by Benjamin Richard Phillip Horner Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2019 Abstract This practice-led thesis explores the creative techniques and philosophies used in composing feature documentary podcasts and how listeners engage with the material and make meaning from it. Podcasting as a medium presents a new and so far unexplored way of interfacing with audio documentary and this study works to demonstrate crucial differences from radio practice in terms of intention and expression, how material is made, consideration for its audience, and how its programmes are distributed. Using post-structural theory, specifically Deleuze and Guattari’s ideas on interconnected networks of affective transmission, podcasting’s relationship to radio is explored, as is how listeners make meaning through their interaction with both the heard material and the devices upon which it is accessed. These theories are then applied to the characteristically open remit of the audio documentary to study how speech, music, sound and silence may be understood to generate meaning, emotion and a sense of immersion in the listener. It is suggested that modes of programme access, listening customs, and interpretational symbolism work together to impart information vital to the ability to connote and denote what is being heard, and that in this way the composed feature can be situated very closely to musical practice and engagement. Taking cues from musical and cinematic analytical practice three podcast programmes are closely scrutinised for an understanding of their constituent material, structural shape, and potential affective transmissions, before interviews with their producers are presented to discuss conceptual intentions and execution.
