NST City 7:45 pm Sun 4th Nov - SO:Write Book Launch with Writers in Residence Nazneen Ahmed, Iain Morrison, SO:Write Women and Mayflower Young Writers Welcome to SO: To Speak 2018 It’s a great pleasure to curate this special weekend of activity, celebrating writers and writing in partnership with John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton, NST, and Southampton Cultural Development Trust from the heart of the Cultural Quarter at Studio 144. As we work towards establishing Southampton as a City of Literature, it’s important to recognise how Creative Writing fills the lives of people in this city, from grassroots levels through to publication and performance. With this in mind, SO: To Speak 2018 celebrates new voices emerging from the SO:Write project alongside more established names from around the UK. From Friday through to Sunday our programme offers something for everyone with performances from the local community alongside some of the UK’s hottest poetic property. We’re delighted to welcome Burning Eye Books, Penned in the Margins, and Nine Arches Press to John Hansard Gallery, along with special guests including hip hop legend and musical maestro, Dizraeli who will be topping the bill in the NST Studio. None of this would be possible without the hard work of our volunteers and the team working behind the scenes to ensure SO: To Speak runs as smoothly as possible. Thanks to everyone who made this year’s event happen, and in particular, to Arts Council England for their continued support. We hope you enjoy the show. SO: To Speak Engagement Symposium Date: Friday 2 November 2018 Time: 2pm – 5pm Tickets available in advance from nstheatres.co.uk Location: NST City, 142-144 Above Bar Street, Southampton, SO14 7DU. This Symposium, exploring literary cultures and barriers to engagement, is delivered in partnership between University of Southampton’s English Department and ArtfulScribe. The event will raise and discuss issues regarding barriers to engagement with live literature, featuring invited key note speakers, panel discussions, and opportunities for audiences to contribute to the debate through floor discussions. This event will be in two parts. Part A, hosted by University of Southampton, will explore how literary cultures have developed in other cities with a view to sharing ideas and examples of good practice that might be considered as Southampton moves forward and raises its profile as a city of literature. Part B, hosted by ArtfulScribe, will consider access issues affecting engagement by disabled people, the deaf community, and marginalised voices from other sectors of society. The symposium will close with a summation by University of Southampton and ArtfulScribe of the afternoon’s session, along with considerations for ‘next steps’ for festival and event organisers looking to ensure inclusivity applies to all who wish to engage in live literature events but who may otherwise face access issues. Confirmed speakers are Louisa Adjoa Parker, Deanna Roger, Amy Wack, Cathy Galvin, Lisa Kelly and Abigail Palmer.
