What will happen to God? Part II GERALD BRAY This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased These are famous words attributed to the Father, who, as the Synoptic Gospels record, pronounced them at the moment when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus immediately after his baptism. The event is also recorded in the Fourth Gospel, but there we are told only that John the Baptist bore witness to the fact that Jesus was the Son of God. John's relative reticence is an argument in favour of granting him priority over the Synoptic account because it is so much less expansive on the subject of these extraordinary happenings. At the same time, John's account confirms that there is an important link between the Baptism of Jesus and the revelation that he is the Son of God. Students of early Church history may recall that Paul of Samosata was condemned at a Synod of Antioch in 268, apparently because he believed that the Baptism of Jesus was the point at which God adopted Jesus of Nazareth as his Son. The descent of the Holy Spirit, according to Paul's interpretation, was the seal which God put on this new relationship into which Jesus had entered. It is not difficult, of course, to see why Paul of Samosata should have fallen into this particular error. Paul was a firm believer in baptismal regeneration, and it seemed to him to be only logical that Jesus' baptism should have the same effect on him as it does on us. -

Wildland fire in ecosystems: fire and nonnative invasive plants. Gen. Tech. Rep. RMRS-GTR-42-vol. 6. Ogden, UT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station. 355 p. Abstract—This state-of-knowledge review of information on relationships between wildland fire and nonnative invasive plants can assist fire managers and other land managers concerned with prevention, detection, and eradi- cation or control of nonnative invasive plants. The 16 chapters in this volume synthesize ecological and botanical principles regarding relationships between wildland fire and nonnative invasive plants, identify the nonnative invasive species currently of greatest concern in major bioregions of the United States, and describe emerging fire-invasive issues in each bioregion and throughout the nation. This volume can help increase understanding of plant invasions and fire and can be used in fire management and ecosystem-based management planning. The volume’s first part summarizes fundamental concepts regarding fire effects on invasions by nonnative plants, effects of plant invasions on fuels and fire regimes, and use of fire to control plant invasions. The second part identifies the nonnative invasive species of greatest concern and synthesizes information on the three topics covered in part one for nonnative inva- sives in seven major bioregions of the United States: Northeast, Southeast, Central, Interior West, Southwest Coastal, Northwest Coastal (including Alaska), and Hawaiian Islands. -

Som huvudsaklig låtskrivare och producent i rockbandet Tame Impala har han skapat sig ett ”signature sound”. Eftersom många gillar hur Parkers trummor låter har det förts långa diskussioner angående produktionsprocessen. Uppsatsen ämnade att ta reda på hur Parkers produktion sett ut och vilka ljudliga artefakter det är som utgör hans sound. Resultatet visar på en väldigt nedskalad inspelning. Ofta med ett enkelt vintage-trumkit och tre till fyra mikrofoner, dämpade skinn samt en hel del kompression och distorsion. Soundet kan beskrivas som väldigt energiskt, mycket tack vare just hård kompression och distorsion. Parkers sound känns igen även utanför Tame Impala. Trummorna upplevs i många fall som mycket mer än bara ett rytminstrument. Uppsatsen förklarar hur okonventionella produktionsprocesser kan ge upphov till originella ljudliga karaktärer, vilket i slutändan kan anses en positiv konsekvens. Global Review of Forest Fires Prepared by Andy Rowell and Dr. Peter F. Moore Preface The forest fires of 1997 and 1998 created enormous ecological damage and human suffering and helped focus world attention on what is an increasing problem. In December 1997, WWF issued a report entitled “The Year the World Caught Fire.” At the time Claude Martin, Director General of WWF, said: “This is not just an emergency, it is a planetary disaster. As the guilty are identified and the blame is apportioned, we must ensure that national and international responses go further than identifying a few scapegoats. This must never be allowed to happen again”. There is growing feeling within WWF and IUCN that action is needed to try and catalyse a strategic international response to forest fires. There are no “magic bullets” for forest fires. The issues to be addressed are complex and cut across sectors, interests, donors, professions, regions, nations and communities. The organisations feel that action only takes place when fires are burning and that little attempt has been made to address the underlying causes. This report is therefore issued as a follow-up to the 1997 report. It is part of an on-going programme of work by the two organisations to address forest fires. In early 1998 IUCN - the World Conservation Union and WWF - The World Wide Fund For Nature, joined forces in developing a Programme for “Strengthening National, Regional and International Networks for Forest Fire Prevention and Management, world-wide”. This “FireFight” Programme seeks to secure essential policy reform at national and international level to provide a legislative and economic base for controlling harmful anthropogenic forest fires. -
