Estelar. Elliott Murphy – Alive In París Posted by Ruben. The Normandy All Stars & Olivier Durand. Para finalizar, un impresionante “Diamonds By The Yard”… “rock and roll is my addiction & literature my religion” (el rock and roll es mi adicción, y la literatura mi religión). Continúan con tres de los mejores clásicosde Mayall “Little Girl”, “Another Man” y “Double Crossing Time”.

May 24, 2014 Star Shines at Shell PHOTO BY YOSHI JAMES Homage to cult band’s “Third” kicks off Levitt series By Bob Mehr The Levitt Shell’s 2014 summer season opened Friday night, with a teeming crowd of roughly 4,000 who camped out under clear skies to hear the music of Memphis’ greatest cult band Big Star, in a show dedicated to its dark masterpiece, Third. Performed by an all-star troupe of local and national musicians, it was yet another reminder of how the group, critically acclaimed but commercially doomed during their initial run in the early 1970s, has developed into one of the unlikeliest success stories in rock and roll. The Third album — alternately known as Sister Lovers — was originally recorded at Midtown’s Ardent Studios in the mid-’70s, but vexed the music industry at the time, and was given a belated, minor indie-label release at the end of the decade. However, the music and myth of Third would grow exponentially in the decades to come. When it was finally issued on CD in the early ’90s, the record was hailed by Rolling Stone as an “untidy masterpiece ... beautiful and disturbing, pristine and unkempt — and vehemently original.” 1 North Carolina musician Chris Stamey had long been enamored of the record and the idea of recreating the Third album (along with full string arrangements) live on stage. He was close to realizing a version of the show with a reunited, latter- day Big Star lineup, when the band’s camp suffered a series of losses: first, with the passing of Third producer Jim Dickinson in 2009, and then the PHOTO BY YALONDA M.

Bob Crewe had a special talent himself and was a highly respected producer Jean’s good friend Ellie Greenwich had a good relation- ship with Bob Crewe and commented on his ability and on how they first met in an interview before her untimely passing in 2009….. "I'm not exactly sure when I met Bob Crewe, but we always saw each other around the business from the very beginning. (We) had an affinity for each other (and) still do! He was a joy to work with on all levels . he's a perfectionist, he's open to any outside ideas, he really knows what he wants and gets it, and most of all, he is passionate about what he does. He puts all of himself into eve- rything he touches . I always loved and still do love Bob! I can go on and on about this talented gentleman, and he is just that: A 'gentle man'." Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart captured the best of Bob Crewe’s productions on “The DynoVoice Story….the label that had to happen” Westside CD226 and say of his unique- ness …..“Bob Crewe is not a man to be easily pigeon-holed. Possessed by an overriding creative urge from his earliest years, he has painted , worked as a photographic model, sculpted, acted, run an art gallery and dabbled in interior design alongside those talents for which he is justly renowned – ie singer, songwriter, producer, label owner, music publisher and manager.” The best of his productions of course include those of Jean Tho- mas.

There is a degree of mystery and uncertainty about just what goes on behind the studio door. Some producers are seen as Svengali- like figures manipulating artists into mass consumer product. Producers are sometimes seen as mere technicians whose job is simply to set up a few microphones and press the record button. Close examination of the recording process will show how far this is from a complete picture. Artists are special—they come with an inspiration, and a talent, but also with a variety of complications, and in many ways a recording studio can seem the least likely place for creative expression and for an affective performance to happen. The task of the record producer is to engage with these artists and their songs and turn these potentials into form through the technology of the recording studio. The purpose of the exercise is to disseminate this fixed form to an imagined audience—generally in the hope that this audience will prove to be real.
