Historia de mujeres es una exposición que reconoce la colaboración de las mujeres artistas mexicanas, quienes aportaron con sus particulares puntos de vista a la historia del arte nacional e internacional. Así, la exposición muestra tres generaciones de creadoras a lo largo del siglo XX: La primera generación son las artistas nacidas a principios del siglo que se distinguieron por un trabajo de gran calidad técnica, como Angelina Beloff, Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo, Remedios Varo, etc. La segunda generación incluye a las que nacieron alrededor de los años 20 y 30, como Lilia Carrillo, Joy Laville, Helen Escobedo, Marta Palau y Ángela Gurría; ellas iniciaron una etapa de experimentación en las nuevas tendencias. -

As part of the 7th satellite programme, KAPWANI KIWANGA (born in 1978) will also be presenting a new work, created especially for the occasion. The Jeu de Paume, as it has for the past ten years, showcases the work of established and emerging artists, exploring artistic practice both historic and contemporary. To mark this anniversary, admission to the exhibitions will be free to all on saturday 7th and sunday 8th June 2014, from 11am to 7pm. There will be numerous surprises to discover and share in throughout the weekend. -

BOOTH C10 GRAND PALAIS 12 - 15 NOV LISETTE MODEL When Lisette Model arrived in New York from Paris in 1938 with her husband, and was stunned by the freshness and dynamism of the city. She met with quick success as a commercial photographer, and her work was often published in magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and Look. Stimulated by the New York’s energy, Model embarked on a new phase of photography making images of metropolitan activity and reflections in shop windows, as well as portraits of celebrities, entertainers, and street people. Model approached her disparate subjects with a rare candour and was often compared to photographers such as Berenice Abbott and Weegee as she drew inspiration from the underside of New York in the bistros and bars of the Lower East side. Known for her stark, biting portraits of the inhabitants of these streets, she sought out life’s extremes, and to create an honest portrayal of modern life and its effect on the human character. Considered one of the foremost photographers of the period by Edward Steichen, the Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Model was a favourite of the institution and was given 13 solo shows between 1940 and 1962. Her searing images, eloquent teachings and love of photography deeply influenced her students such as Diane Arbus, Larry Fink, and many others. Lisette Model has been exhibited widely in institutions such as MoMA, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Jeu de Paume, Paris and SF MoMA, San Fransisco. -

I PAINT MY REALITY Surrealism in Latin America Through Spring 2021 The avant-garde Surrealist movement emerged in France in the wake of World War I and spread globally as artists and art works traveled, and ideas circulated through art journals and mass media. Dreams, psychoanalysis, automatism (creating without conscious thought), collage, assemblage and chance were among the methods the Surrealists used to tap into the unconscious mind and stimulate the imagination. The European Surrealists embraced their Latin American colleagues, who nevertheless expressed ambivalence about the movement. Mexican artist Frida Kahlo famously refuted being labeled as a Surrealist, stating that she never painted dreams, instead asserting, “I painted my own reality,” while Uruguayan Joaquin Torres-Garcia advocated for a modern art that was not beholden to European modern art. Latin America’s complex history, magical landscapes, indigenous cultures, archeological sites, mythologies, migrations, and European and African religious traditions shaped these artists’ reality. The rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s as well as the Spanish Civil War and World War II shifted the focus of Surrealism to the United States and Latin America, where many of the European artists sought refuge. These artists’ proximity to each other promoted friendships that were especially fruitful during this period and in the post-war years. While many of the exiled European artists who lived in the United States during the war returned home afterwards, those in Latin America and in Mexico in particular, tended to remain there for the rest of their lives. This exhibition is drawn exclusively from NSU Art Museum’s Latin American collection, including promised gifts from Fort Lauderdale collectors Stanley and Pearl Goodman. -
