LEADERSHIP GROUP Polina Starovoitova Director Dina Papaconstantinou Stage Manager Erin McAnna Choreographer Sarah Dokowicz Choreographer Julianne Gibson Choreographer Brianna Bock Choreographer Steven Pashidis Choreographer Ngioka Bunda Heath Choreographer In 2007 we continued the tradition of inviting a former Rock Eisteddfoder to direct a production. Polina Starovoitova, one of our most exuberant dancers and part of the leadership team for 2005 and 2006, combined a degree in Psychology with the stressful task of overseeing the 2007 production from inception to performance. The results speak for themselves with Brighton only a point behind the winner of the Grand Final. Polina plans to direct the 2008 production as well. The idea was a simple one but chosen to be much more audience friendly in terms of metaphor and closer to mainstream productions. The danger of course was in the possibility of duplication by other schools and this indeed turned out to be the case. We used the essence of the TV game show, and in particular Snakes and Ladders as a familiar board game, to show an analogy with life where the effort and the result seldom match. The visual part came from observing workers building a house on the Grange seafront and the use of ladders to reach the various levels. Ladders would become the prime symbol of the production and provide the parting image of Ngioka Bunda Heath climbing ever higher in her own spotlight to reach the unreachable prize. Each of the groups on stage had their own personality from the playfulness of the hosts, to the decorative sophistication of the hostesses, to the exuberant contestants, to the ever- revolving dice, but it was the snakes of whom we were most proud. Led by Sarah Dokowicz, they were the epitome of skill and sheer energy and added a level of excitement every time they were on stage.

Adelaide Crows BSS was fortunate to be selected as one of only two schools Football Club this year at which the Crows would conduct a formal training session. Being part of the AFL mid season break week the Crows were keen to do something different for the players and we were asked to host the team for the morning. The squad of approximately 40 players arrived just after 10 am accompanied by almost 20 support staff and a contingent of representatives from all the major TV, radio and print media stations. Five very nervous members of our Open Knock out football team were selected to participate in the vigorous training session. Congratulations to Sam Venning, Alex Carey, Hayden Jolly, Sam Sverdloff and Matt Spier who represented the school very well. Neil Craig organized to deliver his mid season media report from our new volleyball stadium, followed by a very interactive discussion with the Year 12 PE students in the Hall. BSS past scholars Matt Bode and James Sellar also spoke to the group and a signed guernsey was presented to the Principal. All students had the opportunity to watch the training at some stage during the morning, whilst many were able to seek autographs from their favourite players. The students are to be commended for their excellent behaviour on the day. Thanks to the Swing Band and Mr Cameron Smith who played the Crows song during the autograph session. Mr Archer and the PE and Volleyball staff are also to be congratulated for their excellent organization of the morning. Staff and students who wore their favourite footy colours for the day were also generous in making a donation to the Charities fund. Model’s meteoric rise From schoolgirl to international model in just six months, Amy Sutton’s rise has come quickly.

The 18 year old from Hallett Cove jetted off to China as Australia’s representative in the Miss Tourism Queen International contest, the third biggest contest of its type in the world, after Miss World and Miss Universe. The former Brighton Secondary School student was chosen on the back of her performance in the Ralph Australian Swimwear Model of the Year

competition, where she fi nished in the top 20 and was included in the magazine’s 2008 calendar. “I really enjoy it and it has improved my confi dence.” Ms Sutton, who is studying a Certifi cate II in Makeup Services, had a sponsorship agreement with Alexis George to provide her evening gown.

New goals in a life after footy

Former Adelaide Crows small forward Matt Bode hasn’t wasted any time since he and the Crows parted company.

Bode and friend Matt Heffernan have opened their new business venture, In the Lifestyles Health For Life, Shop 5 and 6 212 Brighton Road, Somerton News Park.

The boys, both 28, have been friends since Brighton Secondary School days and played cricket at Glenelg Cricket Club together.

After missing lots of footy due to injury, including a knee injury which restricted him to one game this year, Bode was delisted by the Crows at the end of the season.

His time at West Lakes will come in handy though – the new venture is a health and fi tness studio which focuses on one-on-one training, small group fi tness, massage and nutrition. Bode, who also is doing a real estate course, said it was good to be working with his mate who he has known for about 14 years.

He hasn’t ruled out pulling on the boots next year for his SANFL team Glenelg, but is unsure as the business is his number one priority.

“It is something I have wanted to do for a long time, but it has been a couple of years in the making,” he says.

Hannah Nielsen leads a double life whilst in Adelaide she’s in the US where she is one of the country‘s most recognisable college athletes. Nielsen has been the dominant performer for Chicago’s North-Western University Wildcats lacrosse team, playing a sport that barely rates a mention here, but boasts a massive profi le in the States. “It’s incredible,’ she said of the media attention. “In my fi rst year there, after practice we had Fox News come and when we made the fi nals, we had media at every training. “It’s kind of funny to think that’s possible in lacrosse.”

Nielsen was in the fi nal fi ve for the esteemed Tewaaraton trophy and has earned a scholarship at North-Western which includes all of her

living expenses covered. The college system means she will be out of the side when she completes her degree in 2009.

“Hopefully I’ll want to stick around and coach over there for a little bit – that’s what a few Australians have done and there’s defi nitely a lot of money in it over there,” she said. While she’s away, Nielsen admits she misses her mum’s cooking and washing. “I’m defi nitely going to end up in Australia – I just love it here too much,” she said.

The event was held as part of the Messenger Newspaper –Adelaide Bank festival of Auction, organised by the Society of Auctioneers and Appraisers (SA), is an auctioneering competition for South Australian secondary school students. The competition aimed to teach the ins and outs of auctioneering and expose students to the profession and help with their career choices. Brighton Secondary School students Billy Mala and Daniel Goode competed in the competition. Billy says becoming an auctioneer is now high on his list of career paths. “I just like the idea of auctioneering,” he says. “I watch Bargain Hunter and really enjoy it. “If you love your job and you’re paid well, it would be an interesting thing to do.” Daniel says the competition is an extension of his drama studies. “I like to try a bit of everything,” he says. “I was really nervous at fi rst, although it’s just talking you need to prepare for.” Current Golden Gavel champion and former Brighton Secondary School student Paul Henry prepared the students for the auction heats as their auction mentor. All participating schools are provided with an industry mentor. “It’s a great concept,” Mr Henry says. “The opportunity to come back to Brighton and tutor the students was a lot of fun.”
