    Travellers in the Great Steppe FROM THE PAPAL ENVOYS TO THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION NICK FIELDING “In writing this book I have tried to explain some of the historical events that have affected those living in the Great Steppe – not an easy task, as there is little study of this subject in the English language. And the disputes between the Russians and their neighbours and between the Bashkirs, the Kazakhs, the Turkomans, the Kyrgyz and the Kalmyks – not to mention the Djungars, the Dungans, the Nogai, the Mongols, the Uighurs and countless others – means that this is not a subject for the faint-hearted. Nonetheless, I hope that the writings referred to in this book have been put into the right historical context. The reasons why outsiders travelled to the Great Steppe varied over time and in themselves provide a different kind of history. Some of these travellers, particularly the women, have been forgotten by modern readers. Hopefully this book will stimulate you the reader to track down some of the long- forgotten classics mentioned within. Personally, I do not think the steppe culture described so vividly by travellers in these pages will ever fully disappear. The steppe is truly vast and can swallow whole cities with ease. Landscape has a close relationship with culture – and the former usually dominates the latter. Whatever happens, it will be many years before the Great Steppe finally gives up all its secrets. Agajanov Contents The Oghuz ........................................ 66 The Kimek ....................................... 74 The Kïpchak ....................................... 77 The Oghuz During the ninth and tenth centuries, the nomadic Turkic Oghuz tribes formed a principal- ity on the middle and lower reaches of the Syr Darya (Jaxartes), in the Aral Sea region and the area of the northern Caspian. There are a number of obscure points in the history of the formation of the Oghuz people and principality in western Central Asia and Kazakhstan. The late S. P. Tolstov considered the home of the Oghuz to be the deserts and steppes of the Aral Sea region. In his view, they had lived there in ancient times before migrating from western to eastern Central Asia.1 In spite of its originality, however, this viewpoint did not gain general acceptance. Research in recent decades points to the conclusion that the Oghuz in western Central Asia originally came from the eastern T’ien Shan region. Oghuz historical tales relate that the headquarters of their supreme ruler or leader was at one time situated on the shores of Lake Issyk-kül. According to different versions of this legend, there was strife among the Oghuz caused by the hostile relations between their ruler and his son, Oghuz Khan. This species inhabited the steppe regions in early Middle and Late Pleistocene. By odontological characters it is more close to U. r. rossicus from Krasnodar, than to U. rossicus uralensis from Kizel Cave in Ural. Discriminant analysis, based on measurements of lower cheek teeth of the cave bears from seven sites of Europe and Siberia, demonstrated that U. rossicus most resembles morphometrically U. savini. As a result of cladistic analysis employed 17 characters of skull, limb bones, and dentition, the phylogenetic tree has been obtained for 7 species of the genus Ur s u s . A four species of the cave bears are included in the subgenus Spelearctos: U. savini, U. rossicus, U. denin - geri and U. spelaeus. A second preparatory mission therefore had to be organized and took place in October 2000. It resulted in a new structure for the report, which was adapted to the many changes in the country that had occurred in the meantime. The review team for the project was constituted following these decisions and included national experts from Finland, France, Denmark, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Uzbekistan, together with the ECE secretariat, UNEP and the Bilthoven Division of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health. The costs of the participation of experts from countries in transition, as well as the travel expenses of the ECE secretariat, were covered by extrabudgetary funds that had been made available from Finland, Germany and Italy.
