Brittany Morreale for earning a Rhodes Scholarship. “I’ll bet many in the staff here would love to hear from all of you graduates in the future - and after spending four years with you, they’d also like you to know that by ‘the future,’ they mean at least four years from now when they’ve recovered,” Admiral Mullen joked. The admiral devoted much of his 25-minute commencement talking about the commitment to which graduates have sworn themselves.

  • Montana: the Last, Best Place?
CHAPTER 2 Montana: The Last, Best Place? o understand politics in Montana and the process of representation, one T does not begin with people or politicians. One begins with place, because without place the rest does not—cannot—be made to make sense. How Montanans understand themselves, their representatives, their history, and their relationship to others—including the federal government—begins and ends with place. It is also place that presents Montanans with their greatest challenges and opportuni- ties. To use Richard Fenno’s terminology, we must begin with the geographic constituency—not only as a physical space and place, but as a shared idea and experience. To understand Montana and Montanans, we must start with the land known variously as the Treasure State, Big Sky Country, distribute or perhaps the most evocative: The Last, Best Place. In this chapter, I provide the reader with a short historyor of Montana’s relation- ship to the land, its historical development, the complicated relationship it has with the federal government, and the challenges the state faces as it transitions from a resource-intensive economy to a more diverse one based upon tourism and hi-tech industries. I claim that the deep connection Montanans have with their physical surroundings shapes howpost, they view politics, the cleavages which exist among them, and the representatives they choose to represent them. Place also dictates the representational choices members of Congress make to build trust with their constituents. In particular, members of Congress are careful to cultivate a representational style known as “one of us” with their constituents.

  • The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby Megan Geneva Murray PhD The University of York Women’s Studies January 2012 Abstract All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track.

  • After All, Cotton Bowl Stadium Is
FP-018 Cotton Bowl Stadium Does the structure in front of you really need an introduction? After all, Cotton Bowl Stadium is renowned worldwide as the venue that for more than 70 years hosted the Cotton Bowl Classic, pitting two of college football’s premier powerhouses against one another on -- or near -- New Year’s Day. The roster of gridiron greats who have played inside this stadium reads like a roll call of athletic superstardom. Davey O’Brien, Bobby Layne, Sammy Baugh, Bart Starr, and Ernie Davis (who was the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy). Let’s not forget Roger Staubach, Joe Theismann, Joe Montana, Bo Jackson, Dan Marino and Woodrow Wilson High School graduate and Heisman winner, Tim Brown. Oh yes, and Troy Aikman, Doug Flutie and Eli Manning, as well. You HAVE heard of some of those people, haven’t you? For more than 70 years, this stadium has also been the host of a piddly little rivalry you’ve probably never heard of, a rivalry between one team that wears Burnt Orange and White, and another that wears Crimson and White. And to be clear, down here that rivalry is always called the TEXAS/OU game … never the other way around. The stadium also hosts the annual State Fair Classic featuring Grambling University and Prairie View A&M, perhaps the one football event in the country where the halftime band performances are more exciting than the game itself. And in 2011, the stadium became the home of the new Ticket City Bowl, featuring teams from the Big 10 Conference and Big 12 Conference or Conference U.S.A.
