Commercial Space Industry Launches a New Phase Updated December 12, 2016 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44708 Commercial Space Industry Launches a New Phase Summary Rockets, satellites, and the services they provide, once the domain of governments, are increasingly launched and managed by privately owned companies. Although private aerospace firms have contracted with federal agencies since the onset of the Space Age six decades ago, U.S. government policy has sought to spur innovation and drive down costs by expanding the roles of satellite manufacturers and commercial launch providers. Global spending on space activity reached an estimated $323 billion in 2015. Of this amount, nearly 40% was generated by commercial space products and services and 37% by commercial infrastructure and support industries. The U.S. government—including national security agencies and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)—accounted for about 14% of global spending; government spending by other countries was responsible for the remaining 10%. The satellite and launch vehicle supply chains are global, with a small number of manufacturers. In 2015, global satellite manufacturing revenues were $6 billion; launches booked $2.6 billion in revenue. Ground stations—the largest part of the commercial space infrastructure—generated more than $100 billion in revenue, largely from geolocation and navigation equipment. The face of the U.S. space industry is changing with a government shift toward use of fixed price contracts for commercial services, new entrants with new launch products, and an increase in the use of smaller satellites: NASA’s commercial cargo program and other federal contracts are supporting the growth of the commercial launch industry, with less expensive rockets, some of which are planned to be reusable. -

Exploration of the Moon The physical exploration of the Moon began when Luna 2, a space probe launched by the Soviet Union, made an impact on the surface of the Moon on September 14, 1959. Prior to that the only available means of exploration had been observation from Earth. The invention of the optical telescope brought about the first leap in the quality of lunar observations. Galileo Galilei is generally credited as the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes; having made his own telescope in 1609, the mountains and craters on the lunar surface were among his first observations using it. NASA's Apollo program was the first, and to date only, mission to successfully land humans on the Moon, which it did six times. The first landing took place in 1969, when astronauts placed scientific instruments and returnedlunar samples to Earth. His non-religious view of the heavens was one cause for his imprisonment and eventual exile.[1] In his little book On the Face in the Moon's Orb, Plutarch suggested that the Moon had deep recesses in which the light of the Sun did not reach and that the spots are nothing but the shadows of rivers or deep chasms. -

SpaceX CRS-4 National Aeronautics and Fourth Commercial Resupply Services Flight Space Administration to the International Space Station September 2014 OVERVIEW The Dragon spacecraft will be filled with more than 5,000 pounds of supplies and payloads, including critical materials to support 255 science and research investigations that will occur during Expeditions 41 and 42. Dragon will carry three powered cargo payloads in its pressurized section and two in its unpressurized trunk. Science payloads will enable model organism research using rodents, fruit flies and plants. A special science payload is the ISS-Rapid Scatterometer to monitor ocean surface wind speed and direction. Several new technology demonstrations aboard will enable bone density studies, test how a small satellite moves and positions itself in space using new thruster technology, and use the first 3-D printer in space for additive manufacturing. The mission also delivers IMAX cameras for filming during four increments and replacement batteries for the spacesuits. After four weeks at the space station, the spacecraft will return with about 3,800 pounds of cargo, including crew supplies, hardware and computer resources, science experiments, space station hardware, and four powered payloads. Sentinel-1A Launch
SENTINEL-1A LAUNCH Arianespace’s seventh Soyuz launch from the Guiana Space Center will orbit Sentinel-1A, the first satellite in Europe’s Earth observation program, Copernicus. The European Space Agency (ESA) chose Thales Alenia Space to design, develop and build the satellite, as well as perform related tests. Copernicus is the new name for the European program previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security), and is the European Commission’s second major space program, following Galileo. Copernicus is designed to give Europe continuous, independent and reliable access to Earth observation data. With the Soyuz, Ariane 5 and Vega launchers at the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Arianespace is the only launch services provider in the world capable of launching all types of payloads into all orbits, from the smallest to the largest geostationary satellites, from satellite clusters for constellations to cargo missions for the International Space Station (ISS). Arianespace sets the launch services standard for all operators, whether commercial or governmental, and guarantees access to space for scientific missions. Sentinel-1A is the 50th satellite with an Earth observation payload to be launched by Arianespace. Arianespace has seven more Earth observation missions in its order book, including four commercial missions (signed in 2013 and 2014). The Copernicus program is designed to give Europe complete independence in the acquisition and management of environmental data concerning our planet. ESA’s Sentinel programs comprise five satellite families: Sentinel-1, to provide continuity for radar data from ERS and Envisat. Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3, dedicated to the observation of the Earth and its oceans. -

The Aerospace Update Falcon Heavy’s Launch Pad Debut Jan. 4, 2018 Image Credit: SpaceX Falcon Heavy Raised on Pad 39A for First Time SpaceX’s first Falcon Heavy rocket, made up of two previously-flown Falcon 9 boosters and a beefed up central core stage, made the trip to launch pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and was raised vertical Thursday, Dec. 28th for testing ahead of its first liftoff next month. The fully-assembled 229- foot-tall (70-meter) rocket will be the most powerful in the world when it blasts off, and Thursday’s arrival atop pad 39A marks a major step toward readying the Falcon Heavy for flight. SpaceX engineers conducted a fit check and completed other tests at pad 39A this week, to followed by a hold-down firing of all 27 first stage engines some time after New Year’s Day. The company has not set a target date for the Falcon Heavy’s first liftoff, but officials say the launch is targeted in January, some time after the hold-down hotfire test. The rocket was lowered back to a horizontal position before dawn Friday, Dec 29th.
