Whether it is the threat posed by climate change, growing economic inequality, mass incarceration, persistent racial inequality, the inhumane treatment of immigrants, the gender pay gap, the student loan debt crisis, or any other pressing social issues, the status quo cannot hold for much longer. Young Americans coming of age today seem less inclined to stand for complacency than many of their predecessors, and their futures and the future of our democracy demand our commitment to bold new approaches. A number of these topics are central to the work of Lawrence Eppard and Henry Giroux. These themes are front- and-center in America at War with Itself, American Nightmare, and the recently released The Terror of the Unforeseen (all from Henry Giroux), as well as the forthcoming Rugged Individualism and the Misunderstanding of American Inequality (from Lawrence Eppard, Mark Rank, and Heather Bullock). -

Despite their popularity there is comparatively little research on self-help books. The aim of this thesis is to explore the connection between modern self-help literature and the ideologies of individualism and neoliberalism in US American culture, and to understand what neoliberal ideas of selfhood are explicitly and implicitly promoted and reflected in self-help books. The first section of the thesis introduces the reader to ideas of individualism and self-making as well as neoliberalism and its influence on US American understanding of selfhood. The second section provides an insight into self-help literature and the general history of self-help. -

The goal of this paper is to prove that statement incorrect and explain how it came to be incorrect by providing a detailed, methodical chain of evidence. It will separate the Party’s perceived image from reality. This paper will analyze pre-Cold War Republican Party and establish the party’s traditional policies before abandoning centrism in the 1960s and 1970s. -

Herbert Hoover: “Rugged Individualism” Speech (1928) America emerged from World War I disillusioned that the conflict did not bring about global harmony and rise of democratic governments around the world. As a result, the United States attempted to revert to isolationism. The 1920s “return to normalcy” brought revival in the business sector. Americans became enamored with big business, mirroring the American sentiment toward industry during the last decades of the 1800s. Business activity and profits increased, and the incomes of many people rose. Hence, most Americans looked to business to provide national direction. Hoover’s classic articulation of American conservative philosophy condemns the Democratic platform as a misguided attempt to solve the problems of prohibition, farm relief, and electrical power through state socialism; he extols free, private enterprise and initiative, a system of “rugged individualism,” as the foundations of America’s “unparalleled greatness.” Government entry into commercial business, according to Hoover, would destroy political equality, increase corruption, stifle initiative, undermine the development of leadership, extinguish opportunity, and “dry up the spirit of liberty and progress.” In 1928, Herbert Hoover scored a substantial election victory over Democratic candidate Alfred E. Smith. In doing so, the Republican Party’s dominance of the White House throughout the entire decade of the 1920s was solidified. During the campaign, Hoover emphasized the success of Republicans in leading America throughout the 1920s. It was Hoover’s opinion, and of the Republican Party as well, that much of that success was due to the party’s refusal to allow government to interfere with the free enterprise system. -

256 Louis Hartz and The Myth of Laissez Faire William G. Shade Lehigh University Although the voices of classical economics had never been still, their vol- ume rose as a chorus of Valkyries riding the tide of the Reagan Revolution cotm- mitted to freeing American enterprise from the bonds of a bloated federal estab- lishment. A sub-text in the sermons of the New Right denouncing liberalism prophesied the rebirth of a lost "federalism." The former focused on federal de regulation; the latter constituted a strategic step in an anti-government campaign to privatize everything from the Post Office to the public schools. As Ronald Reagan said in his inaugural, "Government is not the solution; it is the problem." Republicans exalted the moral primacy of the market place in the name of individ- ual economic rights. Reagan's successor, George Bush has appealed consistently to traditional rhetoric locating the "will of the people" in the local community. At the same time, in the current conflict over extending public funds to parochial schools, the "edu- cation " President has attacked the public schools as inefficient monopolies--"bad for the kids"--portraying the question as one of the individual's freedom of choice. Ironically, by the 1980s America had bred a generation of 17-year-olds who did not know that "laissez faire" referred to "minimal government regulation of the econ- omy" although they had lived most of their lives under presidents dedicated to getting the government off the backs of businessmen and out of the pockets of the super-rich.' Earlier in this century the debate over positive government occurred in the quite different political environment of the Great Depression and the threat of totalitarianism. -

TOPIC: Hoover vs. FDR Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression On October 24, 1929 – only seven months after Hoover took office – a steep drop in the value of the U.S. stock market sent the economy spiraling downward and signaled the start of the Great Depression. Banks and businesses failed across the country. Nationwide unemployment rates rose from 3 percent in 1929 to 23 percent in 1932. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, homes and savings. Many people were forced to wait in bread lines for food and to live in squalid shantytowns known mockingly as Hoovervilles. Democrats coined many terms based on opinions of Herbert Hoover such as “Hoover blanket" (old newspaper used as blanketing), "Hoover flag" (an empty pocket turned inside out), "Hoover leather" was cardboard used to line a shoe when the sole wore through, and a "Hoover wagon" was an automobile with horses hitched to it because people couldn't afford gasoline for cars. ! What’s a Hooverville? ! Why do you think Hoovers name was used to describe all these things? Hoover’s response to the crisis was constrained by his conservative political philosophy. He believed in a limited role for government and worried that excessive federal intervention posed a threat to capitalism and individualism. He felt that assistance should be handled on a local, voluntary basis. Accordingly, Hoover vetoed several bills that would have provided direct relief to struggling Americans. “Prosperity cannot be restored by raids upon the public Treasury,” he explained in his 1930 State of the Union address. Instead, Hoover believed in Rugged Individualism " people will succeed through their own efforts. -

Rugged Individualism in American Political Thought Abstract After Herbert Hoover used the term “rugged individualism” in his 1928 campaign speech, the phrase became a cornerstone of American politics, advanced in the 1930s in opposition to social liberalism and New Deal collectivism. This thesis explores the political rhetoric and policy platforms that dominated the Depression era, mapping a spectrum of ideologies that displays the nuanced similarities and differences among and between the various political camps. Discourse between Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the two main figures in the political debate about government interventionism at the time, represented the pinnacle of the controversy. The examination of these two Chief Executives’ policy intentions demonstrates that Hoover and Roosevelt exhibited far more political centrism than first meets the eye. Based on their rhetoric, policies, and center-leaning divergences from more polarized extremes, this thesis questions the assumption of insurmountable polarization in American politics, and emphasizes the utility of the relative moderation employed by these two administrations.
