New TARA group What is a TARA? want to ‘make a difference’ A Tenants and Residents Association, or TARA, is a group of people living in a specific area who come together to provide one voice for local people.

Groups are usually a mixture of tenants from local housing associations, home owners and other residents. They can form for lots of different reasons and many start because a specific issue needs addressed where they live.

TARA groups can do loads of different things to improve the area they live in. Dementia Friends Dementia Friends is a national campaign run by Alzheimer’s Scotland, which aims to raise awareness of dementia and dispel some of the myths around dementia.

Residents from , Dumfries, and Moffat came together at Catherinefield Court in Dumfries to meet the Alzheimer’s Scotland team in September.

Laney Gillespie, Supporting People officer with DGHP, said: “It was the natural next step for us to bring our residents into the programme. We will be taking a closer look at the stores who sell you goods on credit, and rent-to-own style stores – often at what looks like a very attractive price.

We believe many people could be being misled by the ‘real’ repayment costs of these items and we want you to know exactly what’s involved.

We will be sending our undercover investigator out – on your behalf – to find out the RT UE cost of buying from these stores.

Not only do many of them offer very high interest rates (APR) but they also sell the items at much, much higher prices to start with. PLUS if you miss a repayment on these items they will take the items away from you.

We are going to make this our aim to raise awareness of this type of credit through our newsletter. Gretna TARA group raise vital funds

Members of Gretna Tenants and Residents Association (TARA) recently raised the outstanding amount of £1,500 for a very worthwhile project.

After receiving a presentation from Fire Scotland on CPR procedures the group decided they wanted to raise money to install a defibrillator locally.

Following some very intense fund-raising, including donations from local organisations and councillors and holding a coffee morning and bring and buy sale, they managed to raise the money.

They hope the machine, which they will also purchase pads and batteries for, will be situated in the fire station for the local community. They hope to hold a training day for local people as well to make the best use of it.
