CYCLING in and around Stewartry The natural place to cycle See also:- - Cycling Signposted Routes in Dumfries and Galloway - Sustrans Maps www.sustrans.org.uk - The National Byway Map www.thenationalbyway.org.uk Particular thanks to John Taylor CTC for route and text contributions and for photographs. Photographs also by Alan Devlin and Dumfries and Galloway Tourist Board This publication has been, designed and funded by a partnership of: Supported by Solway Heritage through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme A Message from the Health Improvement Group Cycling can seriously improve your health & happiness. Enjoy! CYCLING IN STEWARTRY This booklet is one of a series of four covering the whole of Dumfries & Galloway that suggest a variety of cycle tours for visitors and locals of all abilities. Local cycling enthusiasts, using their knowledge of the quieter roads, cycle routes and byways, have researched the routes to provide an interesting and rewarding taste of the region. A note of distance, time, terrain and facilities is given at the start of each route. All start points offer parking, toilets, snack places and accommodation. Some routes include stretches off-tarmac and this is indicated at the start of the route. Parking discs are required for some car parks and these are available at Tourist Information Centres and in local shops. Stewartry is part of the old province of Galloway. In those centuries when the easiest way to travel any distance was by sea, it held a strategic place on the west coast, Irish and Isle of Man routes. This explains the many archaeological remains near the coast.

  • Dr Alexander Craig Doctor in Gatehouse 1922 to 1950
Dr Alexander Craig Doctor in Gatehouse 1922 to 1950 Birth and Early Years Alexander Currie Carruthers Craig was born in 1894 at Johnstone Bridge, Dumfriesshire. His father was Thomas Craig, a schoolmaster, who was born c.1858 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire. His mother Elizabeth Carruthers was born c.1862 at Applegarth, Dumfriesshire. The couple married at Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire in 1886. In the 1901 Dumfriesshire census the family lived at the Schoolhouse, Johnstone. Alexander was 7 years old and had 3 older siblings (Jane, Mary and William) and 3 younger siblings (Margaret, Elizabeth and James). Alexander's schooling is unknown, but he probably attended Johnstone School, where his father was headmaster, and maybe later moved to Dumfries Academy. He attended Edinburgh University as a medical student, graduating MB ChB in 1917. In the 1911 census he may have been living in Dalkeith, outside Edinburgh. (Scotlands People index lists an Alexander C. C. Craig aged 71 – this should probably be 17) Qualification After graduating, Alexander worked as a temporary Surgeon- Lieutenant with the Royal Navy during 1918 and 1919. He also worked at the West Hertfordshire Hospital and the Bristol General Hospital. He came to Gatehouse as the local doctor about 1922, moving into Roseville, a large house in Ann Street. His surgery was a room in his house. His father Thomas also lived in Gatehouse until about 1927 and three of his sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary were living at Roseville when they each married during 1924 and 1925. Roseville in the 1930s Medical Directory entry 1925 Marriage and Children On 11th September 1927, Alexander married Margaret Wilson Armstrong at the United Free Church, Gatehouse of Fleet.

Dumfriesshire Rare Plant Register 2020 Christopher Miles An account of the known distribution of the rare or scarce native plants in Dumfriesshire up to the end of 2019 Rare Plant Register Dumfriesshire 2020 Holy Grass, Hierochloe odorata Black Esk July 2019 2 Rare Plant Register Dumfriesshire 2020 Acknowledgements My thanks go to all those who have contributed plant records in Dumfriesshire over the years. Many people have between them provided hundreds or thousands of records and this publication would not have been possible without them. More particularly, before my recording from 1996 onwards, plant records have been collected and collated in three distinct periods since the nineteenth century by previous botanists working in Dumfriesshire. The first of these was George F. Scott- Elliot. He was an eminent explorer and botanist who edited the first and only Flora so far published for Dumfriesshire in 1896. His work was greatly aided by other contributing botanists probably most notably Mr J.T. Johnstone and Mr W. Stevens. The second was Humphrey Milne-Redhead who was a GP in Mainsriddle in Kircudbrightshire from 1947. He was both the vice county recorder for Bryophytes and for Higher Plants for all three Dumfries and Galloway vice counties! During his time the first systematic recording was stimulated by work for the first Atlas of the British Flora (1962). He published a checklist in 1971/72. The third period of recording was between 1975 and 1993 led by Stuart Martin and particularly Mary Martin after Stuart’s death. Mary in particular continued systematic recording and recorded for the monitoring scheme in 1987/88.

  • 6335 Rhins of Galloway Lighthouse Booklet 200X110
Lighthouse Guide Discover the aids to navigation on the Rhins of Galloway Coast Path Since people first ventured out on perilous journeys across the sea many attempts have been made to build landmarks warning sailors of dangers or guiding them to safety. This guide will help you discover lighthouses, foghorns and beacons along the Rhins of Galloway Coast Path as well as reveal some of the ships that have been wrecked on the rugged shore. This Lighthouse Guide has been produced as part of the Rhins of Galloway Coast Path project managed by Dumfries and Galloway Council. Portpatrick Cover: Corsewall Lighthouse How to use this guide The 3 operational Lighthouses on the Rhins are important features on the coastal landscape, managed by the Northern Lighthouse Board to perform a vital role in keeping mariners safe in all weathers. Discover a variety of navigational aids many of which are designated as listed buildings. Get up close with lighthouse tours and an exhibition at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse or admire at a distance decommissioned lighthouses and redundant beacons. The map at the back of the guide shows you the location of these visually striking reminders of how dangerous the rocky coast of the Rhins can be to mariners. Killantringan Lighthouse Mull of Galloway Lighthouse Designed by Robert Stevenson and first lit in 1830, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse is perched on Scotland’s most southerly point. • George Washington Wilson (1823-1893)
George Washington Wilson (1823-1893) Photographically innovative and entrepreneurial in business, Wilson was the most notable, successful and prolific stereo-photographer in Scotland and perhaps the entire UK. Having trained in Edinburgh as an artist, he worked as a miniature portrait painter and art teacher in Aberdeen from 1848. He started experimenting with photography in 1852, probably realising that it could potentially supplant his previous profession. In a short-lived partnership with Hay, he first exhibited stereoviews in 1853 at the Aberdeen Mechanics' Institution. A commission to photograph the construction of Balmoral Castle in 1854-55 led to a long royal association. His photos were used in the form of engravings for Queen Victoria's popular book “My Highland Journal”. His best-selling carte-de-visite of her on a pony held by Brown (judiciously cropped to remove other superfluous retainers) fuelled the gossip surrounding this relationship. His portrait studio in Aberdeen provided steady cashflow and in 1857, to promote his studio, he produced a print grouping together famous Aberdonians, one of the earliest ever examples of a photo-collage. He soon recognised that stereoviews were the key to prosperity and by 1863 had a catalogue of over 400 views from all across the UK, selling them in a wide variety of outlets including railway kiosks and inside cathedrals. His artistic training helped him compose picturesque and beautiful images, but he was also an innovative technician, experimenting on improving photographic techniques, chemistry and apparatus, working closely with camera and lens manufacturers. He was among the very first to publish “instantaneous” views, ranging from a bustling Princes Street, Edinburgh to a charming view of children paddling in the sea, both dating from 1859.
