Possessed of considerable talent and deep piety, she has, for many years, with great stability and zeal, humility and discretion, pursued a course of active and laborious usefulness. The poor found in her a friend, whose sympathies and exertions were awakened by and directed to the relief of their temporal necessities and spiritual destitution. During eleven years, she visited the prisoners in the Calton Jail, assiduously labouring to promote in them the formation of habits of industrious occupation and to advance their moral improvement. In the Infirmary she found another scene of benevolent and pious exertion, where many of the female patients welcomed with gladness her judicious councils. She was also a visitor of the Magdalen Asylum and of the Poor House. In short, it may be aid of her, that she “went about doing good;” her’s [sic] was a sincere, humble, cheerful, active, and diffusive piety. She was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Nicolson’s Square, but was well known to and possessed the friendship of many of the good and pious in other communions. Her memory is blessed; she rests from her labours and her works follow her. He was for several years employed as principal assistant in the English school of St. Andrews, and afterwards, in a similar capacity, in the classical department of Ayr Academy. His amiable dispositions, his example, his exemplary conduct, and modest deportment, endeared him to all who knew him; and while they deplored his premature decease, they also regret the disappointment of the hopes, which his high talents led them to entertain, of his rising to eminence, and adding another to the literary names by which his native district, Galloway, is already adorned. The announcement in question was transmitted to us in a letter bearing the Birmingham post mark of the 29th March; and would doubtless be considered a rare hoax by its pitiful perpetrator. We have, however, only one feeling for persons so base as to make the courtesy of the Press the vehicle of private spleen and public mis-statement, and carry pain into the domestic circle, and that is a feeling of ineffable contempt and detestation; and right glad would we be to hold forth to the scorn all men the name of one so odious.

The Rhode-Island (U.S.) papers announce the death, on Monday, 20th April of Samuel Slater, Esq. – long known as one of the most enterprising and respected citizens of that State, and as the father of the cotton manufacturing business in this country. The first cotton-mill built in the United States were erected by him, in Pawtuket. Capt. Kater, is among the recent losses which the country has sustained. He was in the prime of life. The celebrated engraver, Giovita Caraviglia, died at Florence on the 27th April. He surpassed even Morghen, his Master – had scarcely attained his 45th year, and was carried off while engaged in his finest work the Assumption, by Guido. In the Bombay Presidency, in January last, Robt. C. Money, Esq., in the Civil Service of the Honourable East India Company. By the death of this excellent young man, the Service to which he belonged has lost one of its brightest ornaments and society a most valuable member. Sent at an early age to India, Mr Money soon distinguished himself as an oriental scholar, and his knowledge of Hindostanee [sic] in particular, acquired him the friendship of many of the most distinguished natives of that country, by whom he was allowed to speak their language in great purity. During his residence in Bombay his mind was actively engaged in the promotion of education among the natives, and for some time he held, in addition to his official appointment, the honourable situation of Secretary to the Bombay Native Educational Society, an Institution which derived much benefit from his unremitting exertions in its behalf. It was his constant practice for some years past, particularly on the Sundays, and frequently during other days of the week, to be engaged with parties of the natives to whom he read the Bible and explained the truths contained in the pages of that sacred volume. His piety was sincere and unaffected, and his anxiety to communicate the knowledge which he possessed of his Saviour, to the benighted heathens by whom he was surrounded was extreme. A few years ago, assisted by the Rev. Mr Wilson, a missionary, and some other gentlemen, who thought and felt as he did, Mr Money succeeded in stablishing a Magazine at Bombay entirely devoted to religious purposes, to the pages of this publication he contributed valuable papers. He lived in the practice of all the duties which adorn the character of a true Christian, and in particular, was constant in his attention to the duties of family worship. In our own country this important service is but too much neglected, and in a distant land, like India, it is, we fear, of still rarer occurrencee (sic). A short time previous to his lamented death, Mr Money was promoted to a higher situation in the Service, at a station some distance from Bombay, and on his route to take possession of his new appointment, in passing through the jungle, he caught the fever peculiar to the marshy and wooded districts of India, which in a few dayt [sic] closed his life of usefulness. No man was more beloved in the Service to which he belonged, and none will be more sincerely regretted, not by his own countrymen alone, but also by many of the natives of India, by whom he was known and respected. It is no light consideration to his relatives and friends, to know that few individuals in any country are better prepared to meet their God, and few thus early called have led a life of more usefulness than he did. Mr Money was the second son of the late William T. Money, Esq., Consul General at Venice, and son-in-law of the Rev. James Gray, late Chaplain to the Honourable East India Company at Bhooj.

At the last term of the Supreme Court, the wife’s petition for a divorce, on account of the husband’s extreme cruelty, was presented, the charges proved, and a bill of divorce granted. A new courtship commenced – the hatchet was buried; and the fond couple, too impatient to abide “law’s delay” of a fortnight, for the usual punishment, repaired incontinently to a magistrate, who united the ardent lover and the blushing bride.

DEATHS.

At Tinwald-Downs, on the 3d curt., to the deep regret of all who knew him, Mr George M. Welsh, grocer, Dumfries, aged 25. The deceased had been in business on his own account for about two years, and never was there a young tradesman that gave fairer promise of that somewhat rare quality commonly called “rising the world.” His manner was excellent, his industry untiring, his principles most sound, and his natural disposition so obliging, that he gradually drew around him so many friends, that competence, if not fortune, appeared to be contingent on lengthened days. Perhaps no youth of the same standing ever passed through life that had less to regret; but where others saw nothing but blamelessness and worth, he himself accounted abstinence from guilt a mere negation, and centered [sic] every hope in the merits and atonement of a gracious Redeemer. On the 28th ult., after a lingering illness, at Laghead, near Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Mr James Kelly, aged 75. He was one of those rare individuals who, during a lengthened span, uniformly followed the golden rule of doing unto others as he could wish to be done by; was kind hearted, generous, and humane; an obliging neighbour, a steady friend, and charitable to the poor, without the slightest ostentation. He possessed good natural abilities, great strength and sterling independence of mind, a clear understanding, extraordinary shrewdness of observation, and unyielding integrity of principle. Few man have descended into the dark and narrow house, who were more truly beloved by their families, or more generally and sincerely lamented by their friends and neighbours. In Van Dieman’s Land, in January, last, John eldest son of the Rev. Walter Dunlop, aged 27. His friends will be pleased to receive this notification. At Hosley Bank, Wrexham, on Sunday 28th ult., Henry Ker, second son of William Dobie, Esq., Surgeon, aged three years. At London, on the 22d ult., Mr James Smith, aged 24. The sage bridegroom is a widower to the tune of 76, the buxom and blooming bride lags nearly a half behind in the silent march of years; but why should querrolous gossips meddle in the matter; a man has a right to make himself comfortable at any period of life. On Sunday week, at St. Philip’s Church, Liverpool, Mr Francis Napier, printer, to Miss Catherine Mackey. Lately, at St Patrick’s Chapel, Toxteth-park, and afterwards at Formby Church, Mr L. From his having long contemplated death with a Christian’s faith and hope, he submitted to his sufferings with a patience and resignation which could not be surpassed, and which could only be regarded as the certain harbinger of the Christian’s reward.
