At Lotus House, on the 25th Dec., Mrs Major M’Kie, of a daughter. At Greenhill Street, Glasgow, on the 1st instant, Mrs John Macharg, of a son. At 5, Melville Street, Edinburgh, on the 30th Dec., the Lady of Horatio Ross, Esq., of Rossie, M.P., of a son and heir. On the 23d ult., at Ramsgate, the countess of Kinnoull, of a daughter. At 1, Albyn Place, Edinburgh, on the 27th ult., the lady of James Crauford, Esq., advocate, of a daughter. MARRIAGES. At Tinwald House, by the Rev. George Greig, Wm. Finlay, master of the Elizabeth and Joanna of Dumfries, to Jean Kent. At Maxwelltown, on the 30th ult., by the Rev. W. Dunlop, Mr Peter Milligan, saddler, Castle-Douglas, to Jane, second daughter of Mr J. M’Kay, manufacturer, Maxwelltown. Here, on the 29th ult., by the Rev. W. Dunlop, Mr William Scotland Raeburgh, smith, to Jane, daughter of the late B. Neilson, Sheriff-Officer. At Sanquhar, on the 30th ult., by the Rev. Thomas Montgomery, Mr John Kerr, Crawick mill, to Miss Ann Hamilton, daughter of the late Captain Hamilton of that place. At Maxweltown, on the 26th ult., by the Rev. Dr Thomas Duncan, Mr Robert Steel, to Nancy Hope. At Preston, near Cirencester, Mr Wm. Riddick, merchant, Cirencester, to Miss Emma Bullock, second daughter of the late Mr Thomas Bullock, Preston, Gloucestershire. At Budleigh Salterton, on the 4th ultimo, John Manley, Esq., of Halberton, to Mary, relict of the late Rev. George Yelland. The bride we understand, is above 70 years of age, and has been led to the hymeneal alter by her fourth husband. Her first consort was J. Lackington, Esq., who acquired so much celebrity as a bookseller, and built the Temple of the Muses, Finsbury Square, London. DEATHS. At Moffat, on the 29th ultimo, Mr George Tait, draper. – His dissolution was most sudden, and exemplified strikingly the well-known Scriptural saying – “in the midst of life we are in death.” While conversing with a gentleman in his own parlour, he expired in one moment without a groan or struggle of any kind. Had his frame been pierced by a poisoned arrow, or struck with lightening, the transition from life to death could not possibly have been more sudden. At Raehills, near Langholm, on the 30th ult., Mr Robert Oliver, farmer there – a man justly endeared by his numerous good qualities, to an extensive circle of friends and neighbours. At Woodhead, near Langholm on the 1st inst., Mr Thomas Lamb, an extensive sheep and cattle-dealer. – The sudden and lamented death of this young man, in the prime of life, has created an irreparable blank in the numerous circle of friend, who esteemed him no less for his modest and amiable disposition, than for his upright and honourable conduct as a dealer. At London, on the 22d ult., Mrs Wm. Gillies, in the 51st year of her age. At Pimlico, London, on the 29th ult., Mr Robert Walker, late cabinet-maker in Dumfries, aged 47 years. At Maxwelltown, on the 23d ult., James Edgar, aged 70, for 22 years Collector of the Bridge Custom, much respected by all who knew him. At Aberdeen, on the 24th December, Professor James Kidd, D.D. At his House in Liverpool, in his 80th year, General Freeman. He served during the whole of the revolutionary war in America, and was aide-de-camp to General Fraser, at Saratoga. On Wednesday, the 3d ultimo, aged 69 years, the Rev. James Fleet Cover, Independent minister, Bolton. The deceased was the first Christian minister that preached the Gospel at Otaheite. Same day, at Pesaro, the celebrated Cardinal Albard, apostolical legate of Urbino and Pesaro, after a long and painful illness. He was born at Rome on the 13th September, 1758, and was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1820 by Pope Pius VII. 14th January 1835 BIRTHS. At Annan, on the 4th inst., Mrs Dobbie, of a son. At Dunfermline, on the 8th inst., Mrs Robert Beveridge, of a son. At Garlieston, on the 7th inst., Mrs Cuthbert, of a daughter. At No 50, Great King Street, Edinburgh, on the 8th inst., Mrs John Spence, of a son. MARRIAGE. At Salter’s-Croft, Girvan, on the 5th inst., by the Rev. M. Leichman, Mr Robert Auslin, surgeon, Royal Navy, to Elizabeth, daughter of Houston Maxwell, Esq. DEATHS. At Dalton Manse, on the 5th inst., the Rev. Dr James Cririe. At Maxwelltown, on the 3d inst., after a lengthened illness which she bore with much Christian patience and resignation, Mrs Agnes Cunningham, relict of Mr Wm. M’Meekin, senior of that place, deeply and deservedly regretted. Here, on the 10th inst., Mrs Frances Armstrong, late of Cockermouth, Cumberland; she has left 5 fatherless and motherless children to lament their loss. At Linburn, Dunscore, on the morning of Wednesday last, John Patterson, farmer there. – He was much respected through life, and his death will be long lamented by his family, and a numerous circle of friends and acquaintances. At Whitehill, near Sanquhar, on the 7th inst., Mr Robert Slimmon, aged 70 years. At Esk-Bank, James Jardine Johnston, son of Mr William Johnston, master of the Academy there, aged 5 years and 3 months. At Thornhill, on the 9th inst., Mary Grierson, spouse of James Hepburn, merchant, aged l74. At Newton-Stewart, on the 2d inst., Mrs Elizabeth, relict of Mr John Gilkison, aged 49 years. At Kingston, Upper Canada, of cholera, Thomas Thomson, foreman, Royal Engineers, aged 39 years, son of David Thomson, stonemason, parish of Tongland, Scotland. At 4, East Brougham Place, Edinburgh, on the 6th inst., in her 69th years, Agnes Russell, relict of Thomas Russell, schoolmaster, Chirnside, Berwickshire. 21st January 1835 NO BIRTHS MARRIAGE. On the 10th inst., at St. Lawrence Church, Hungerford, Berkshire, John Becks, Esq. of Langley and Standen, Wilts, to Julia Anne, eldest daughter of Captain Lidderdale, second son of the late Wm. Robertson Lidderdale, Esq. of Castlemilk, Dumfries-shire. DEATHS. Here, on the 14th inst., after a lingering illness, which she bore with Christian fortitude and resignation, Elizabeth Affleck, daughter of Robert Affleck, mason, in the 35th year of her age. At Edinburgh, on the 12th inst., Miss Agnes Kirkpatrick, aged 96 years. At Cargen Cottage, on Wednesday morning last, Susan Reid, spouse to James Dalziell, weaver there, deeply regretted by her friends and acquaintances. At 27, Scotland Street, Edinburgh, on the 9th instant, Hugh Cowan, Esq., writer to the signet. At Paris, on the 2d inst., Sir Wm. Kepple, the late friend and companion of George IV NOTICE All persons having CLAIMS against the late RICHARD WILLIAM PEACOCK, merchant in Dumfries, previously the date of the Trust Deed, granted by him on the 30th July, 1834, requested to lodge states thereof, within fourteen days from this date, in the hands of Mr John M’Kaig, merchant, the Trustee: or PRIMROSE & GORDON, writers, Dumfries. Those failing to do so will be excluded from any participation in the funds. 28th January 1835 BIRTHS. At Port Maria, Jamaica, on the 22d November last, Mrs Simpson, of a daughter, still-born. MARRIAGES. At Annan, on Monday, the 26th inst., John Dickson, teacher of mathematics in the Academy, to Johanna Maria, eldest daughter of John Robert Irving, Esq. of Bonshaw. At Sanquhar, on the 23d inst., by the Rev. Thomas Montgomery, Mr John Hair, mason, to Miss Susan M’Crone, daughter of Mr James M’Crone, Dean of Guild, Sanquhar. DEATHS. Here, on the 18th curt., at his sister’s house, Assembly-street, Captain John Ewing, of the 24th Regiment, The deceased served 20 years in India, in which climate his health became impaired. His last station was Quebec, from which distant fortress he returned little more than five weeks ago, in the hope of deriving benefit from the invigorating breezes of his native hills; or failing such a blessing, that there might be persons near and dear to him to close his eyes, and deposit his remains in the place that gave him birth. The deceased was a quiet, inoffensive, honourable man, a skilful disciplinarian, and a good soldier. His funeral, which took place on Saturday, was at once numerously and most respectably attended; and what is remarkable, the coffin was borne shoulder high by the staff of the regiment in which he obtained his first commission, more than thirty years ago. At Moniaive, on Saturday last, after a lingering illness, borne with becoming resignation, John, youngest son of the late Alexander Moffat, Esq. of Lochurr. At Nithbank, Dumfries, on the 19th current, after a lingering illness, borne with the greatest fortitude and Christian resignation, Mrs Janet Johnston, deeply regretted by all who had an opportunity of appreciating her virtues. At Glasgow, on the 13th current, Mrs Robert Wallace, eldest daughter of Mr William Bell, turner, Dumfries. At Queensberry-street, here, on the 25th inst., Thomas Kennedy, aged 70, much and deservedly regretted by all who knew him. At Port Maria, Jamaica, on the 23d November last, Mary Kay, wife of the Rev. John Simpson, Scottish missionary there. At Woodside Road, near Glasgow, on the 4th inst., Eliza Thompson, only daughter of the late Rev. John Chamberlain, Scottish missionary at Port Maria, Jamaica. At Barwhirran, near Wigtown, on Thursday, the 22d curt., aged 22, Eliza Beath, wife of Mr Charles Hannay, farmer there, deeply and deservedly lamented.
