Focusing on mass media representations of black soldiers before, during, and after the war, it reveals a near-total popular culture saturation of aggressive and courageous imagery that black men increasingly used as a guide to confront racism, justify armed self- defense, and force local and federal governments to address black grievances. These martial representations in film, inexpensive artwork, black “histories” of the war, editorial cartoons, popular novels and poems, and in commemorative events featuring black soldiers provided a well-defined guide outlining the modern, masculine black man. Too often historians of the period focus on the “Talented Tenth,” young, energetic middle-class African Americans, and the complications they experienced as they struggled to maintain respectability and redefine their gender and social standing in a rapidly modernizing world. Prior to World War I, the primary model for manly protest was through quiet petitions to government officials and the grudgingly passive acceptance of a racist society that might eventually bestow equality based on thrift and hard work. The war provided African Americans with a more forceful, but now domesticated model that encouraged assertiveness, and at times violence to secure full citizenship and civil rights based on the heroic actions of the black soldier. ii DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to my family and close friends that kept me sane throughout this long and arduous process, to my colleagues who remain buried under mountains of their own research, and most of all, to my beautiful wife for all of her love, support, and sacrifice. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am grateful for this opportunity to recognize the many colleagues, friends, faculty members, research assistants, and family members who have contributed their time, energy, and expertise to this project. And to my wife, Kristin, your unyielding support inspires me to be the best friend, husband, and historian I can be. v The recent race riots at Longview, Texas, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, Ills., call for a brief analysis of the general causes underlying such outbreaks. Some of the causes, such as lynching, disfranchisement, jimcrowism and segregation, have been long standing; but it required the awakened spirit of the Negro soldier returning from France full of bitter resentment to set the spark that has released the pent up feelings of the masses. Conditions have been very tense in many places since demobilization started. Primarily, the colored soldiers returned from France very much embittered. Their grievances were compound. In addition to the grievances common to white and colored soldiers alike, were added the sting of the insidious propaganda and prejudice from which Negro soldiers keenly suffered in France at the hands of white Americans. The free social intermingling in France made the discriminating restraints of America more galling. The total absence of color prejudice among Frenchmen made the returning Negro soldier impatient and resentful of proscription at home. Open acts of hostility on the part of white Americans against them, the report of which to the War Department brought no redress or relief, intensified the discontent. Such nefarious communications as the confidential circular sent out from the American army to French officers in August, 1918, in which the French were requested to conform with American customs and traditions in their attitude toward colored American soldiers, have aroused the most bitter resentment among Negroes throughout the country. It was but natural that the bitter feeling of the returning soldiers should be communicated to the civilian population… …Here military lessons come into play. The Negro has been taught to fight. Added to a natural pugnacious instinct, he has been given the equipment, both intellectual and physical. The government has taught him the lessons of violence during the world war. Defense of himself against German whites is quickly shifted to defense of himself against American whites. As a whole Negroes have resolved never again to submit to the treatment which they have received in the past, and any attempt to deny them such privileges and rights as they are entitled to, in common with other men, will be promptly resented. The above is a true statement of existing conditions, verified by personal observation and contact with Negroes of all classes. Major Walter H.     Cutting patterns in D.W. Griffith’s Biographs: An experimental statistical study Mike Baxter, 16 Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5BJ, U.K. (e-mail: [email protected]) 1 Introduction A number of recent studies have examined statistical methods for investigating cutting patterns within films, for the purposes of comparing patterns across films and/or for summarising ‘average’ patterns in a body of films. The present paper investigates how different ideas that have been proposed might be combined to identify subsets of similarly constructed films (i.e. exhibiting comparable cutting structures) within a larger body. The ideas explored are illustrated using a sample of 62 D.W Griffith Biograph one-reelers from the years 1909–1913. Yuri Tsivian has suggested that ‘all films are different as far as their SL struc- tures; yet some are less different than others’. Barry Salt, with specific reference to the question of whether or not Griffith’s Biographs ‘have the same large scale variations in their shot lengths along the length of the film’ says the ‘answer to this is quite clearly, no’. This judgment is based on smooths of the data using seventh degree trendlines and the observation that these ‘are nearly all quite different one from another, and too varied to allow any grouping that could be matched against, say, genre’1. While the basis for Salt’s view is clear Tsivian’s apparently oppos- ing position that some films are ‘less different than others’ seems to me to be a reasonably incontestable sentiment. It depends on how much you are prepared to simplify structure by smoothing in order to effect comparisons.

They did so by embracing a policy agenda favoring strong civil rights protections and encompassing a broad vision of economic modernization and expanded access for education. Furthermore, black congressmen embraced their role as national leaders and as spokesmen not only for their congressional districts and states, but for all African Americans throughout the South.

Bolton. 296 pp. This work investigates civil rights activism in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, in the early 1960s, especially among students at Shaw University, Saint Augustine’s College (Saint Augustine’s University today), and North Carolina College at Durham (North Carolina Central University today). Their significance in challenging traditional practices in regard to race relations has been underrepresented in the historiography of the civil rights movement. Students from these three historically black schools played a crucial role in bringing about the end of segregation in public accommodations and the reduction of discriminatory hiring practices. While student activists often proceeded from campus to the lunch counters to participate in sit-in demonstrations, their actions also represented a counter to businesspersons and politicians who sought to preserve a segregationist view of Tar Heel hospitality. The research presented in this dissertation demonstrates the ways in which ideas of academic freedom gave additional ideological force to the civil rights movement and helped garner support from students and faculty from the “Research Triangle” schools comprised of North Carolina State College (North Carolina State University today), Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Many students from both the “Protest Triangle” (my term for the activists at the three historically black schools) and “Research Triangle” schools viewed efforts by local and state politicians to thwart student participation in sit-ins and other forms of protest as a restriction of their academic freedom.

    Building Networks: Cooperation and Communication Among African Americans in the Urban Midwest, 1860-1910 Jack S. Blocker Jr.* In the dramatic narrative of African-American history, the story of the post-Emancipation years begins in the rural South, where the rights won through postwar constitutional amendments gradually yield to the overwhelming forces of segregation and disfranchisement. During the First World War, the scene shifts to the metropolitan North, where many members of the rapidly growing southern-born migrant population develop a new, militant consciousness. Behind this primary narrative, however, lies another story. An earlier, smaller migration flow from South to North had already established the institutional and cultural foundations for the emergence of a national racial consciousness in postbellum America. Much of this crucial work took place in small and mid-size towns and cities. Some interpreters have seen the creation of a national racial consciousness as a natural and normal product of African heritage. This view, however, neglects the diverse origins and experiences of African Americans during the slavery years. “Alternatively,”writes historian Harold Forsythe, “we should consider that a distinctive national community developed from local roots during emancipation. Local associations of freedpeople, organized in families, neighborhood groupings, churches, [and] benevolent and fraternal orders, slowly developed into regional, statewide, and ultimately national consociations. This process of unification involved not only consciousness, but [also] institutional and power connections. It matured between 1909 and about 1925.”’The process of community-building can be seen clearly in the three states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, which I call the Lower Midwest. On the eve of the Civil War, about 56,000 African Americans lived in the Lower Midwest.

(2011) Directed by Dr. Mark Rifkin and Dr. SallyAnn Ferguson. 74 pp. Why Whites Riot: The Race Riot Narrative and Demonstrations of Nineteenth Century Black Citizenship examines the Philadelphia riots between 1834 and 1849 and the Wilmington 1898 riot to explore how black fiction counters white explanations of race riots. White newspaper reports of race riots have historically depicted blacks as the oppressors and whites as victims, but black fiction illustrates race riots as white onslaughts against blacks who suffer the brunt of injuries, typically involving physical injury or property destruction. Particular narratives in the black literary tradition are uniquely constructed around race riots, offering it as a lens through which readers can examine the ways black intellectuals challenge dominant narratives on race riots and specifically the ways they theorize the relation between violence, “race,” property, and citizenship. I figure race riot narratives as particularly distinguished by their rhetorical aims to contest black substantive citizenship as untenable and by their exposure of white violent social practices as evidence of white fear of black social, political, and economic power. In this thesis, I examine The Garies and Their Friends and Charles Chesnutt‟s The Marrow of Tradition as two defining texts of the race riot narrative genre. These texts demonstrate how the black domestic/public space serves as a signifier for the social, economic, and political privileges of substantive citizenship. The black domestic space, then, becomes important to understanding why black property ownership threatens whites, and in particular, why whites riot.

    Mike Wiley – The Playwright and Actor Actor and playwright Mike Wiley has spent the last decade fulfilling his mission to bring educational theatre to young audiences. In the early days of his career, Wiley found few theatrical resources to shine light on key events and fig- ures in black history. To bring these often ignored stories to life, Wiley started his own production company. Through his work, he has introduced countless students to the sto- ries and legacies of Emmett Till, the Tuskegee Airmen, Henry “Box” Brown and more. Mike Wiley has a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wiley has also appeared on the Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and the National Geographic Channel and was recently profiled in Our State magazine. Timothy B. Tyson – The Author Tim Tyson, noted author and historian, was born and raised in North Carolina. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1994 and currently serves there as a Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies and also holds positions in the Duke Divinity School and the Department of History. His memoir Blood Done Sign My Name won the Southern Book Award, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Award and received the Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion from the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The book has also been selected for the reading programs of a number of communities and colleges (including The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Villanova University and The University of Iowa). A movie based on the book is sched- uled for release in the coming months.
