ust in case riding and showing in dressage and eventing Jdoesn’t keep them busy enough, a group of our SEDA Junior Riders are also avid participants in Louisiana 4-H. Alex Varisco, Shelby Rome and Alisia Moore competed in the District 4-H Horse Show that was held in Baton Rouge from June 26-29. Each girl qualified to ride at the State Horse Show which was held July 9-15 in West Monroe. The 4-H horse program is designed not only to teach horsemanship skills, but also about good sportsmanship and teamwork and building friendships. At the State Show, the girls competed under saddle and in the Educational Competitions. Alisia Moore competed in the Open Public Speaking with a speech on “Quadrille” and Alex Varisco won first place for her speech on “The Importance of Dressage”. 4-H agents from around the state sent in questions about horses for the Quiz Bowl. Teams had 10 minutes to accumulate points by answering questions on horse anatomy, diseases, care and ancestry. Our team came in fourth in the Quiz Bowl competition for the Junior Division. Alisia Moore placed 6th in English Showmanship (14 & older), Alex Varisco place 8th in English Showmanship (13 & under) and 7th in the English Equitation competition. SEDA should be very proud of our girls for all their hard work and the guts to compete in their breeches and show boots amongst the cowboy hats and denim. The horse industry is an important part of Louisiana’s diversified agriculture. The latest figures show the total economic impact of the industry meant about $2.45 billion to the state’s economy in 2006, said Dr. Paul Coreil, LSU AgCenter Alisia Moore and Alex Varisco at the Ike Hamilton in West Monroe. vice chancellor and director of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service. Coreil said horse-related youth development activities, such as the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H horse projects, are an extremely important part of the educational development of the next generation of horse enthusiasts. The 4-H program is the youth development arm of the nationwide land-grant university system. It is operated in Louisiana by the LSU AgCenter and includes projects for youth on topics ranging from raising livestock to computer science, family life, environmental science and much more.
