Sleep-Dependent Consolidation of Motor Skills in Patients with Narcolepsy-Cataplexy

CIPOLLI1 1 Department of Psychology, University of Bologna, Italy; 2 Department of Neurological Sciences, University of Bologna, Italy; 3 City of Bologna Local Health Trust, Bologna, Italy A bstract Background and Objectives: This study investigated whether the altered organization of post-training sleep in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (NC) is associated with a lower off-line improvement in the consolidation of motor skills compared with normal subjects. Study Design: Fourteen drug-naive NC patients, fulfilling the international clinical and polysomnographic diag- nostic criteria, and 14 individually-matched controls underwent training at a sequential finger tapping task (FTT) and were re-tested on the next morning (after a night with polysomnographic recording) and after another six nights (spent at home). Setting: Training and retrieval sessions were performed in a controlled laboratory setting. Results: FTT performance was worse in NC patients than controls at training and at both retrieval sessions and showed a fairly different time course (slower than in controls) of consolidation. Several sleep indices (lower values of stage-2 NREM sleep and SWS) were compatible with a lower effectiveness of sleep for consolidation of motor skills in NC patients, although no statistically significant relationship was found between such indices and improve- ment rate. Conclusion: The consolidation process of motor skills results less effective in NC patients since training and slower than in normal subjects over the week following training. -

Elaborative encoding, the ancient art of memory, and the hippocampus Sue Llewellyn Faculty of Humanities, University of Manchester, Manchester M15 6PB, United Kingdom http://www.humanities.manchester.ac.uk [email protected] Abstract: This article argues that rapid eye movement (REM) dreaming is elaborative encoding for episodic memories. Elaborative encoding in REM can, at least partially, be understood through ancient art of memory (AAOM) principles: visualization, bizarre association, organization, narration, embodiment, and location. These principles render recent memories more distinctive through novel and meaningful association with emotionally salient, remote memories. The AAOM optimizes memory performance, suggesting that its principles may predict aspects of how episodic memory is configured in the brain. Integration and segregation are fundamental organizing principles in the cerebral cortex. Episodic memory networks interconnect profusely within the cortex, creating omnidirectional “landmark” junctions. Memories may be integrated at junctions but segregated along connecting network paths that meet at junctions. Episodic junctions may be instantiated during non–rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep after hippocampal associational function during REM dreams. Hippocampal association involves relating, binding, and integrating episodic memories into a mnemonic compositional whole. This often bizarre, composite image has not been present to the senses; it is not “real” because it hyperassociates several memories. During REM sleep, on the phenomenological level, this composite image is experienced as a dream scene. -

Kieckhefer Department of Family and Child Nursing Background and purpose: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a major health problem in children with Down syndrome (DS), and may adversely affect not only health, but also accomplishment of life’s daily activities and habits. Obesity is a known risk factor of SDB in the general population, but in children with DS there have been conflicting reports on the role of obesity in SDB. The goal of this dissertation is to: 1) review the current state of knowledge in sleep of children with DS; 2) describe sleep patterns, and examine the relationship of sleep disturbances, including SDB, with the accomplishment of daily life habits; and 3) describe activity patterns, and evaluate the relationships between SDB, sleep duration, obesity and physical activity (PA) in a sample of children with DS. Methods: A review of the English language literature between 1960 and 2012 was completed, studies were described and synthesized. An Internet sample of 139 parents of children ages 5 to 18 years (110 parents of children with DS, 29 parents of children with typical development [TD]), completed a 45-minute online survey. -

FEDERATION OF EUROPEAN NEUROSCIENCE SOCIETIES Report on the Use of the Grant for Brain Awareness Week Events in Europe The directors of the Dana Foundation approved a grant in the amount of US$35.000 (equivalent to 26.000 Euros) to FENS. This money enabled FENS to fund small grants to European Brain Awareness Week partner organizations for public programming during the campaign. FENS distributed these grants in a competitive procedure. A call for applications was launched and the best projects were funded. Advertising A call for applications was sent by email to all members in all FENS member societies in the beginning of December 2008. The deadline for application was January 8, 2009. Furthermore, the BAW grants were announced in the News section on the FENS website. A reminder email was sent by mid December 2008. The applicants had to submit their proposal on a standardized application form. Selection procedure The selection was done by a committee composed of members of Dana, Edab, and FENS: Barbara Gill (Dana) Pierre Magistretti (Edab) Beatrice Roth (Edab) Alois Saria (FENS) Fotini Stylianopoulou (FENS) 72 applications from 24 different European countries were submitted. Approx. 29 projects could have been funded from the Dana grant. Since there were so many excellent proposals FENS decided to add 3.111 Euro. Therefore, finally 34 projects in 22 different European countries could be supported, (see attached list). However, his original 1909 monograph is not widely read by neurologists. Furthermore, he reproduced his maps in 1910 and 1914 with a number of important changes. The 1914 version also excludes areas 12-16 and 48-51 in human brain while areas 1-52 are described in animal brain. Here, we provide a detailed explanation of the different versions, and review Brodmann's academic profile and work. Key words: Brodmann’s map; missing numbers; Brodmann’s profile; Brodmann’s works; infographics Introduction The following paper is based on a Japanese language version (BRAIN and NERVE, April 2017) by MK. Recently I developed a passion for the design of charts and diagrams and enjoy looking through books on infographics. The design of visual information has made remarkable progress in recent years. Furthermore, figures, tables, and graphic records are on the agenda at every editorial meeting of Brain And Nerve. The maps of Korbinian Brodmann (1868-1918) were first published in German in 19091, and I believe they rightly belongs to infographics since they localise neuroanatomical information onto human and animal brain – monkey, for example – using the techniques of histology and comparative anatomy. Unlike the cerebellar cortex, which has a generally uniform three-layer structure throughout, most of the cerebral cortex has a six-layer structure of regionally diverse patterns. -

He was among the first to use reaction times for analyzing hemispheric specializations and interactions in intact and split brain humans. His latest research interests include visual spatial attention and the representation of the body in the brain. My deepest roots lie in the ancient Lombard city of Pavia, where I was born 78 years ago, on May 25, 1935, and in that part of the province of Pavia that lies to the south of the Po River and is called the Oltrepò Pavese. The hilly part of the Oltrepò is covered with beautiful vineyards that according to archaeological and historical evidence have been used to produce good wines for millennia. -
