Information for first time visitors to Geneva Getting to and from the Airport (Cointrin) At the airport: Before leaving the arrivals lounge (luggage carrousels), take a ticket from the TPG (Transports publics genevois) machine located near the exit (before passing Customs/Douane). This ticket is free and provides visitors with one hour of travel using the Geneva Public transport system. This is plenty of time for you to get either to WHO or to your hotel. When you check in to the hotel you should be given a Geneva Travel Card which will allow you to use all bus and tram services within central Geneva, including the no. 8 bus from Cornavin train station to WHO headquarters and the train or bus to the airport. Train: The quickest way to/from Geneva airport to downtown Geneva (Gare Cornavin) is by train (Sfr2.50 ‐ takes 15 minutes ‐ runs half‐hourly). Bus (links to timetable in both directions): No. 5 (direction Thônex), 22 mins; No. 10 (direction Rive, stop Lyon/Gare Cornavin), 20 mins. Both buses run regularly, including on weekends. Taxi: A metered taxi from the airport into town costs between Sfr35 and Sfr50. Getting to and from WHO headquarters Bus (links to timetable in both directions): No. 8 (direction Veyrier Douane), 20 mins; No. 8 (direction OMS / WHO from Gare Cornavin), 20 mins. This bus runs every 5‐10 minutes during the week. The stop at WHO (OMS) is temporarily off site due to some structural works that are taking place on WHO premises. The stop is located just outside of the WHO campus (see Map 4 below). In December 2017, TPG introduced a major change to bus and tram services. All bus and tram stops are now “on request”, i.e. buses and trams will only stop if a passenger has requested them to by holding out their hand to the driver. This change is intended to increase the efficiency of bus services. The workshop is organized by the European Space Agency, ESA and the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN. The year 2014 holds a particular significance for CERN: on 29 September it will be exactly 60 years since the Organization was created. The name CERN is derived from the acronym for the French "Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire", or European Council for Nuclear Research, a provisional body founded in 1952 with the mandate of establishing a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe. At that time, pure physics research concentrated on understanding the inside of the atom, hence the word "nuclear". Today, our understanding of matter goes much deeper than the nucleus, and CERN's main area of research is particle physics – the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces acting between them. Because of this, the laboratory operated by CERN is often referred to as the European Laboratory for Particle Physics. Physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light.

Public transportation is easily accessible from the airport. Geneva International Airport offers you a free ticket into town, valid throughout the « Tout Genève » zone of the Geneva Public Transport system. You can get the free ticket from the automatic distributor, located in the baggage claim area, just before going through customs. It is valid for 60 minutes and is available to arriving passengers only. Bus 28 takes you directly to the WTO (Jardin Botanique direction). By taxi: Taxis can be found directly outside the arrival hall. One-way fare to the WTO should be no more than CHF40. By train and bus: The Best Way... Taking the train right from the airport to Geneva’s main train station (Gare Cornavin) takes only 6mins. At the airport, follow the signs to the train platform. Tickets can be purchased at the desk located on the level above the platforms or at electronic booths by the tracks. A one-way second class fare costs CHF3.50. For a simple second class trip from the airport to Gare Cornavin, you can also use the free tickets available through the distributors in the baggage claim area.
