International Journal of Development and Sustainability ISSN: 2186-8662 – www.isdsnet.com/ijds Volume 6 Number 12 (2017): Pages 1931-1945 ISDS Article ID: IJDS17092105 Urban sustainability and traditional neighborhoods, a case study: Bursa, Turkey Arzu Ispalar Çahantimur *, Rengin Beceren Öztürk, Gözde Kırlı Özer Uludag University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture, Bursa, Turkey Abstract The objective of the present study was to focus on the urban sustainability potential and traditional residential areas of historical cities based on the compact city concept. The study includes four sections. In the introduction, the important role that the cities play in sustainability was discussed with an emphasis on the significance of traditional housing areas in urban sustainability. In the second section, whether the compact city form is suitable for historic urban quarters was investigated with an empirical study conducted in Bursa, Turkey. In the study, home and home environment were considered as a transactional whole, which defines and defined by a set of cultural, social, and psychological factors, hence, a transactional theoretical approach was adopted. The study utilized observation and ethnological research methods in conjunction with surveys conducted with the residents of historic quarters in Bursa, which is one of the most historical cities in Turkey, a developing nation. The case study findings and policy recommendations on sustainable urban development in historic cities were addressed in the final section of the present study. Introduction Since the defeat of the Byzantine troops at the hands of the Seljuq Turks at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Anatolian peninsula underwent a slow but steady process of Islamisation and cultural transformation.2 By the time the Mongols entered the peninsula in the 1240s, the local Seljuq dynasty of Rum was ruling over a multifaith, multiethnic and multicultural society where different conceptions of Islam (Hanafi, Shafiʿi and Sufi) and Christianity (mainly Greek Orthodox and Armenian but also inivisual Catholics) cohabited with the semi-nomadic -

Journal for the Education of Gifted Young Scientists, 6(2), 30-42, June 2018 e-ISSN: 2149- 360X http://jegys.org Research Article Gifted Children Metaphor from the Perspective of Teachers and Parents1 Hatice KADIOĞLU ATEŞ2 Received: 27 August 2017 Accepted: 15 March 2018 Abstract Metaphors help understand how the meanings investigated are perceived (Cerit, 2008; Rizvanoglu, 2007). As may be seen from these statements, metaphors may be regarded as an important tool for identifying the perceptions of teachers and parents of the gifted children. Therefore, this study aims to explore the perceptions of teachers and parents of the gifted children by way of metaphors. The research participants were selected on voluntary basis from among the parents and teachers of primary and middle school students in Istanbul between the 2016-2017 academic year who are identified as gifted. A total of 150 parents and 50 teachers were included in the study group. Screening model was used in the present study entitled, “Gifted Children Metaphor from the Perspective of Teachers and Parents.” Data was collected by qualitative research method. The relevant information on the subject was collected using the interview technique. Teachers and parents were administered a semi-structured interview form. Both parents and teachers were asked the fill the form that includes the statement, “a gifted child is like ........... because ...........” Data was analyzed using the content analysis technique. The views expressed by the parents and teachers during the interviews were read and coded accordingly, and thereafter, themes were created according to the inter-related codes.
The Effect of Augmented Reality Use on Achievement, Misconception and Course Engagement*
CONTEMPORARY EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, 2018, 9(3), 297-314 https://doi.org/10.30935/cet.444119 The Effect of Augmented Reality Use on Achievement, Misconception and Course Engagement* Mustafa Sirakaya Ahi Evran University, Turkey Ebru Kilic Cakmak Gazi University, Turkey Submitted: 05.03.2018 Accepted: 12.06.2018 Published: 16.07.2018 Abstract Augmented reality is defined as a technology in which real world and virtual objects are combined with a simultaneous interaction. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of augmented reality use on students' achievement, misconception and course engagement. A (matched) quasi-experimental research design with both pretest and posttest control groups was used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 118 seventh grade students receiving education in six different classes. The students in the experimental group took their lessons with an augmented reality learning material, while the students in the control group continued using their traditional course materials. An achievement test, a misconception test and the student course engagement questionnaire were used as data collection tools. As a result of a 7-week implementation, this study found that augmented reality technology increased the achievement level of students and eliminated their misconceptions. However, the study also found that augmented reality technology did not affect the course engagement of students. Keywords: Augmented reality; Achievement; Misconception; Course engagement; Secondary school students; Astronomy education Introduction The use of technology is recognized as an important part of education. It is recommended as a solution in enabling effective learning at schools (Seferoglu, 2009). Studies showed that the use of technology in education increases the achievement levels of students, offers a meaningful learning tool by attracting students' attention to course content, and makes the learning process active and effective (Sumadio & Rambli, 2010).
