Ester pertence à primei‑ ra geração nascida em Israel após a Operação Moisés de 1984, que resgatou a comunidade minoritária de judeus fixados na Etiópia há muitos séculos, mas refugiados no Sudão durante uma grave crise de fome. A sua música tem sido descrita como uma combinação de ethio ‑jazz, urban ‑funk, neo ‑soul e R&B, com apontamentos rítmicos oriundos da música negra. Fortemente influenciada pelo soul, jazz e blues america‑ nos, teve como primeiras referências nomes como Nina Si‑ mone, Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin e Stevie Wonder. Once these migrants settle in cities like London, Abu Dhabi, Tel Aviv, Rome or Toronto, they organize themselves into cultural enclaves that navigate their positionality viz. the state, religious practice, and their bodies. While scholars are occasionally interested in the explicit security ramifications of absorbing these migrant workforces, they pay less attention to the cultural forces propelling citizenship, and to migrants’ relationship with their home culture. This gap in knowledge is counter-productive, because scholars and policymakers will have trouble assessing the Ethiopian migrant population’s perspective through interview material alone. The Ethiopian values of honor and respect for authority dictate a hesitance to criticize explicitly, so the population’s feelings about marginality rarely emerge in discussion about labor. This taboo curtails the effectiveness of typical ethnographic methods (e.g. interviewing). Rather, this article examines Ethiopian music as a prism through which migrant musicians navigate the complex web of religious, ethnic, national and embodied identities in their new surroundings.

The study of migrant culture sat comfortably for a while with a structural-functionalist culture concept emphasizing boundedness and stasis, figured astransitional , adaptive, evidence of modernization or Westernization. An orientation toward hybridity in the 1980s began to shake some of these certainties, even if it kept others (the normative framework of the nation-state) in place. This article argues that work on refugees and diasporas at around the same time departed from them more radically. The current moment is one in which the final vestiges of language about migrant culture as adaptive have been swept away and in which the populist evocation of a migrant crisis at our gates has posed unsettling challenges. This article explores the tensions in the current literature between an emphasis on migrant creativity and survival, mobility and motility, and identity and citizenship.
