What Does Donna Lee Mean? An Analysis of the Construction of Meaning in Music Uri González Uppsala Universitet Institutionen för musikvetenskap C-uppsats Ht 2004 Handledare: Lars Berglund Abstract This essay examines the construction of the meaning of bassist Jaco Pastorius’ solo on Charlie Parker’s composition Donna Lee (Pastorius 1976) according to musicologist Jean- Jacques Nattiez’ semiological tripartition theory. After the application of Nattiez’ approach, the following conclusions can be established: 1. At the time of its conception, 1976, Donna Lee represented both a big step forward in the developments of the instrumental possibilities of the electric bass. In its refusal to submit to exclusively rhythmic tasks it gradually became an increasingly soloistic voice. This arrived to the point where it actually was conceivable for a bass player to take upon a three chorus long solo on a classic jazz standard. 2. Despite this innovative spirit which drives Pastorius artistic output, his Donna Lee pays hommage to the jazz tradition and to the group of stylistic constraints that today characterize what is known as bebop. 3. The final meaning of Donna Lee and of any other musical text goes beyond its historical vicissitudes and its immanent structures. Meaning is not imposed by the exterior but is constructed by the individual mind in a perception that is creative and over-productive in a circular dialog with the environment. The essay will also make reference to the theories of musical semioticians and cognitive psychologists such as James Gibson, Robert Hatten, Ruben Lopez Cano, José Antonio Marina, among others. “Before coming to NYC and meeting up with Rory Stuart I really had no idea how fascinating the world of rhythm was. Rory was like an open door to so many worlds of music, both in the sense of style and approaches of rhythm. Some things I take from his classes will always be a part of my music.” - ARI BRAGI KARASON (Trumpeter from Iceland) “During my four years at the New School, Rory Stuart was one of the kindest, most supportive and inspiring teachers I had the pleasure of studying with. His approach to rhythm infuenced my music so deeply that I still fnd myself drawing from that inspiration when I write. Not to mention, of all the music I wrote those four years, my best tunes came out of Rory’s classes!” - BECCA STEVENS (Vocalist and Composer, USA) “Rory Stuart’s versatility as a guitarist, composer and music researcher makes him one of the most original artists in contemporary music. His masterful ability to teach complicated rhythms in an understandable language has helped students and renowned jazz musicians from around the world to develop their unique voices. I feel honored that I had a chance to study with him. Rory showed me how rhythm goes beyond groove and feel, and this deeply changed my bass playing style.” - AMANDA RUZZA (Bassist from Brazil) “Rory Stuart has done an amazing job leaving no stone unturned in the rhythmic universe. He covers an incredible amount of ground in the text accompanied by frst rate audio examples, a necessity when tackling the ambiguities of rhythm in music.

David Garibaldi 012 Bumpin’ It Up Interview: Mover • Words: Stan Hall • Photos: Rob Shanahan Photo: GaribaldiPhoto: Stock 013 There’s really no debate about it, when anyone says “funk drumming,” David Garibaldi’s name comes up immediately. Long admired for his twisted, slippery, shifting rhythms and relentless determination, he’s taken his natural talent and single-minded focus, coupled with a dedication to constant improvement, and he’s turned it into a signature sound, one permanently linked to the legendary Tower of Power, itself less a band than a musical world unto its own. A poppin’ snare, sneaky ghost notes, an itchy bass-drum foot, and accents and stabs that provide unexpected but perfect punctuation: Dave’s groove bumps it up, and when he plays, nobody can sit still. • Lydia Pense & Cold Blood
PRESS RELEASE - February 7, 2014 Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts Presents Lydia Pense & Cold Blood At Mt. Vernon’s Historic Lincoln Theatre Saturday March 29, 2014 at 7:30pm Lydia Pense & Cold Blood debuted when the Fillmore was at its peak as one of the nation's musical Meccas. Owner Bill Graham was so impressed with Lydia's voice and the sound of the band that he immediately signed Cold Blood to his new record label. During the span of six original late-60's, early-70's albums, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood helped, along with Tower Of Power, forge their own specific brand of funk/soul and R&B which came to be known as East Bay Grease. That music still holds up today, proving that great music is timeless and will continue to inspire generations to come. Opening for Cold Blood will be local R&B singer The Margaret Wilder Band in their Lincoln Theatre debut. Margaret is a musical sensation and performer with an original fire. The word from LA is that she is “a young Bonnie Raitt meets Marcia Ball,” and this is one musician who actually lives up to the Hollywood buzz. From headlining festivals and playing premier clubs to opening for such heavy hitters as John Lee Hooker Jr., Margaret Wilder has enthralled audiences in the Northwest and Canada. This is a fund-raising event by the Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts to support their mission to keep the arts alive in Skagit Valley. Please come out and support the arts and enjoy a high energy show of funk and R&B done by one of the original East Bay power bands from the Summer of Love in the late 60's and a local R&B songwriter.

  • Tower of Power
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 22, 2010 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS TOWER OF POWER FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25 Richmond, BC – The renowned horn-driven funk outfit Tower of Power has been issuing albums and touring the world steadily since the early 70’s in addition to backing up countless other musicians. The group's leader since the beginning has always been tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo who moved from his hometown of Detroit, Michigan to Oakland, California. It was there that Castillo put together a group called the Motowns which as its name suggested specialized in 60’s-era soul. In 1968, Castillo teamed up with baritone sax player – and Motowns fan – Stephen "Doc" Kupka and soon the Motowns had transformed into Tower of Power. One of the first tunes that the duo penned together was "You're Still a Young Man" which would eventually go on to be one of their signature compositions. The band played regularly in the Bay Area throughout the late 60’s as its line-up often swelled up to ten members including such other mainstays as Greg Adams on trumpet and vocals and Rocco Prestia on bass. By 1970, the funk outfit had inked a recording contract with San Francisco Records resulting in the group's debut album the same year, East Bay Grease, which failed to make an impression on the charts as they were still trying to find their own sound. But it all came together quickly for the group as 1972's Bump City would touch off a string of classic releases including 1973's self-titled release which featured the hit singles, “So Very Hard To Go,” “This Time It’s Real” and “What Is Hip?” Albums to follow included Back to Oakland, Urban Renewal and In the Slot.
