In his day, he achieved such success that contemporary musicians referred to him as the “African Mahler”. John chooses his Violin Concerto, played by Philippe Graffin, composed for the American violinist Maud Powell, and which was subject to rewrites as parts were lost during their transit to the United States.

To celebrate the middle of August, John features music from the 2021 Vienna Midsummer Concert, held in June in the Schoenbrunn Palace Gardens and led for the first time by British conductor Daniel Harding.

8pm to 10pm: THE CLASSIC FM CONCERT with JOHN SUCHET: UNDERAPPRECIATED VIOLIN CONCERTOS – PART 1 / 5

All week on the Classic FM Concert, John is celebrating underappreciated violin concertos – those which perhaps stand away from the spotlight that was enjoyed by their more famous contemporaries, but which John thinks deserve more attention.

Chouchane Siranossian is the soloist in the world premiere recording of Romberg’s Violin Concerto No.4. A big star in cultural Hamburg, Romberg wrote a large number of works for violin, but only 16 manuscripts from his whole oeuvre have survived.

Later in the programme, the Staatskapelle Dresden play the uncharacteristically uplifting Symphony No.8 by Beethoven, who was born just three years after Romberg. There’s also a suite of music from Debussy’s only opera, Pelléas and Mélisande.

His Violin Concerto No.1 was dedicated to the celebrated musician Joseph Joaquim – also the dedicatee of works by Schumann, Dvořák and Bruch – and premiered in honour of the composer’s 50th birthday in 1908. Chloe Hanslip is the soloist in this recording, accompanied by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Born to an Afro-Cuban family and sometimes known as José Lafitte, White was celebrated in his local community for his virtuosic violin playing – until a wealthy American sponsored him to study in Paris, where he gained fans in more fashionable society.

Rachel Barton Pine, a champion of lesser-known composers, plays White’s work, after an overture by one of his admirers, Rossini.

Later, there’s a charming Piano Quartet by Mozart, and music synonymous with enchanted broomsticks.

The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto was written by Gang Chen and Zhanhao when they were both students, and it was briefly censored during the Cultural Revolution. Telling the story of a pair of star-crossed lovers, the concerto features traditional instruments, including the Erhu and Liuqin.

8 FRIDAY 20TH AUGUST

8pm to 10pm: THE CLASSIC FM CONCERT with JOHN SUCHET: UNDERAPPRECIATED VIOLIN CONCERTOS – PART 5 / 5: A MAXIM VENGEROV EXCLUSIVE

All week, John Suchet has been showcasing underappreciated violin concertos – those which receive less attention than some of their contemporaries – and the celebrations conclude with a very rare and special performance.

Celebrating the birthday of Classic FM’s Artist in Residence Maxim Vengerov, there’s an exclusive unreleased recording by the great violinist of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, in its rarely played original form. The 1904 premiere was a disaster, as the concerto was too fiendishly difficult for the soloist, so Sibelius withheld it from publication and made substantial changes to create the piece usually played to this day.

This didn’t stop Vengerov, who requested special permission from the Sibelius estate to perform the original version, joined by the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra under Marios Papadopoulos.

Elsewhere in the programme, there’s a stormy Mendelssohn overture, and a recent recording of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
