In his day, he achieved such success that contemporary musicians referred to him as the “African Mahler”. John chooses his Violin Concerto, played by Philippe Graffin, composed for the American violinist Maud Powell, and which was subject to rewrites as parts were lost during their transit to the United States. To celebrate the middle of August, John features music from the 2021 Vienna Midsummer Concert, held in June in the Schoenbrunn Palace Gardens and led for the first time by British conductor Daniel Harding. 7pm to 10pm: SMOOTH CLASSICS AT SEVEN with CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Charlotte’s Young Classical Star is Kian Soltani, a 29-year-old Iranian cellist. He was born in Bregenz to a family of Persian musicians from Iran and began playing the cello at the age of four. Kian has held the post of principal cellist in the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and has performed as a soloist with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Oslo Philharmonic and as part of Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday celebrations at the Tanglewood Festival. Chouchane Siranossian is the soloist in the world premiere recording of Romberg’s Violin Concerto No.4. A big star in cultural Hamburg, Romberg wrote a large number of works for violin, but only 16 manuscripts from his whole oeuvre have survived. Later in the programme, the Staatskapelle Dresden play the uncharacteristically uplifting Symphony No.8 by Beethoven, who was born just three years after Romberg. There’s also a suite of music from Debussy’s only opera, Pelléas and Mélisande. His Violin Concerto No.1 was dedicated to the celebrated musician Joseph Joaquim – also the dedicatee of works by Schumann, Dvořák and Bruch – and premiered in honour of the composer’s 50th birthday in 1908. Chloe Hanslip is the soloist in this recording, accompanied by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. There’s also music by two of Hubay’s musical supporters and admirers: Liszt and Brahms. Born to an Afro-Cuban family and sometimes known as José Lafitte, White was celebrated in his local community for his virtuosic violin playing – until a wealthy American sponsored him to study in Paris, where he gained fans in more fashionable society. Rachel Barton Pine, a champion of lesser-known composers, plays White’s work, after an overture by one of his admirers, Rossini. Later, there’s a charming Piano Quartet by Mozart, and music synonymous with enchanted broomsticks. The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto was written by Gang Chen and Zhanhao when they were both students, and it was briefly censored during the Cultural Revolution. Telling the story of
