This new edition translated by Richard Pevear gets very high marks and both restores material as well as making the translation less florid and closer to the original French. -

PRESS KIT THE EUROPEAN ROAD OF D’ARTAGNAN: FIRST EUROPEAN EQUESTRIAN ROUTE Open to all hiking practices 2 First European equestrian Route certified by the Council of Europe, the European Route D’Artagnan is a physical and linear hiking route, established on basis of historical and literary documents which retrace the epic of Charles de Batz de Castelmore D’Artagnan born in Lupiac in Gascony (FR) around 1615, and died at the siege of Maastricht (NL) on June 25, 1673. The life of the musketeers who accompanied D’Artagnan or who have any link with this itinerary have enriched this theme. Historically speaking, the Route takes up the peregrinations of the Captain-Lieutenant of the First Company of Musketeers who accompanied King Louis XIV on all his travels, in the 17th century, as well as the paths taken during “special missions” entrusted by the King or by Cardinal Mazarin, his Prime Minister, in 6 countries and 15 regions. On the literary level, D’Artagnan was made famous thanks to three novels by Alexandre Dumas published in the 19th century: Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844), Vingt ans après (1845) and Le vicomte de Bragelonne (1847). The novels of Alexandre Dumas have been translated into many languages and have undergone multiple adaptations (films, cartoons, novels, plays, musicals, comics, manga, etc.) in several languages, which have popularized the character and made him a “swashbuckling hero” known over the world. D’Artagnan is a unique historical figure, an instantly recognizable musketeer silhouette, with a finely trimmed mustache and beard, indicative of an era, which has stood the test of time without losing its strength or modernity. -

Review by Sylvie E. Blum-Reid, University of Florida. Julianne Pidduck constructs her presentation of the film La Reine Margot in a three-part study. Directed, co-written by Patrice Chéreau and Danièle Thompson, and produced by Claude Berri (Renn Productions) the film was released in 1994. The long introductory first chapter lays out the rich production contexts of the film and brings together different layers such as the genre of the film, Chéreau’s theatrical background, the issue of literary adaptation in the 1990s at the core of the film, notwithstanding present in much of French cinema, earlier adaptations of Dumas’ eponymous novel, the French cultural context at the making of the film in 1994, the star persona of Isabelle Adjani, her roles in French cinema, coupled with the myth surrounding the queen Margot and Adjani herself. In what is an extremely well-argued and articulated study, Pidduck makes a case for a comprehensive rereading of the film that has drawn critical reviews and controversy since its first appearance in theatre. Now thanks to the new French film guide series directed by Ginette Vincendeau (U. Illinois Press), she examines film reviews and articles on the film as well as historical studies to situate the extremely complex moment surrounding the “Queen Margot” and the era of the Religious Wars and the events known as the Saint-Barthélémy massacre that took place in August 1572. -

Margot's dashing lover La Mole and his compatriot Coconnas are our two heroes and their fates weave in and out of the lives of the French Court.Outside of that, this is really too difficult of a storyline to describe unless I wanted to write a book report and give it all away, and you know I don't do that. In typical Dumas fashion and flair La Reine Margot overflows with treachery, intrigue, hidden staircases and doors, poison, murder plots, gallant heroes and best of all - Catherine de Medici is the most deliciously over the top villainess I have come across in a long time. -

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) BLACK EUROPEANS: A British Library Online Gallery feature by guest curator Mike Phillips Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was the son of Marquis Alexandre-Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, and a slave, Louise-Céssette Dumas, from the Caribbean island colony of Saint Domingue (or Santo Domingo, known as Haiti after 1804). Returning to France in 1780, De La Pailleterie consented to his son joining the army on condition that he did not use his name. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas’ courage and strength became legendary and by 1793 he was a general at 31. Following a successful campaign with Napoleon in Egypt, Dumas seemed set for a brilliant future but, because of his involvement in a republican plot, he was despatched to France, captured during the journey and imprisoned. Freed after 20 months, he was lame, deaf in one ear, partly paralysed and penniless. At the age of 35 he was obliged to retire to Villers-Cotterêts, a quiet village near Paris where he had married Marie-Louise Elizabeth Labouret in 1792. Alexandre was born on 24 July 1802. Madame Dumas was in raptures because of his fair skin and blue eyes. A few days before she had seen a puppet show with a black devil called Berlick, and she had been terrified at the prospect of giving birth to a Berlick. Alexandre adored his father, who died in 1806. Told that his father been taken away by God the four-year-old Dumas angrily declared his intention of going up to heaven and demanding satisfaction. In adult life he was to fictionalise many of his father’s real life exploits in his famous novel The Three Musketeers. -

Les trois mousquetaires I A.Dumas April 12-30, 2019 Of course I read ’The three musketeers’ when I was a child. In a Swedish translation of course, and at the age of ten or so I guess. Maybe I even reread it a few years later, if so at the age of 15 I guess. But that is speculation. I do remember that I found the book very exciting, and the names of Athos, Aramis and Porthos and their personalities became deeply engrave din memory (unlike those of their servants). But what did i really remember of it, except that I found it profoundly enjoyable. When it comes to specifics there are only a few fragments which linger in my memory. That d’Artagnan came from Gascony, and that it was important. That the musketeers got up at six o’clock in the summer at at eight in the winter (it is actually repeated once in the original text), and why should this stick in my memory? Maybe because it indicated a that every day was an adventure, as opposed to attending school? Also their signal of friendship ’One for all, and all for one’ which I now encounter for the first time in the French original (Tous pour un, un pour tous). I also recall the king Louis XIII and the Cardinal Richelieu, and that much action seems to take place around ’Jardin de Luxembourg’ which made this place somehow ’sacred’ to me during my visits to Paris. But of the actual plot, nothing at all! Reading the book now I wonder what could have excited a young boy? The intimations of love and sex? Hardly.
