This new edition translated by Richard Pevear gets very high marks and both restores material as well as making the translation less florid and closer to the original French. -

PRESS KIT THE EUROPEAN ROAD OF D’ARTAGNAN: FIRST EUROPEAN EQUESTRIAN ROUTE Open to all hiking practices 2 First European equestrian Route certified by the Council of Europe, the European Route D’Artagnan is a physical and linear hiking route, established on basis of historical and literary documents which retrace the epic of Charles de Batz de Castelmore D’Artagnan born in Lupiac in Gascony (FR) around 1615, and died at the siege of Maastricht (NL) on June 25, 1673. The life of the musketeers who accompanied D’Artagnan or who have any link with this itinerary have enriched this theme. Historically speaking, the Route takes up the peregrinations of the Captain-Lieutenant of the First Company of Musketeers who accompanied King Louis XIV on all his travels, in the 17th century, as well as the paths taken during “special missions” entrusted by the King or by Cardinal Mazarin, his Prime Minister, in 6 countries and 15 regions. On the literary level, D’Artagnan was made famous thanks to three novels by Alexandre Dumas published in the 19th century: Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844), Vingt ans après (1845) and Le vicomte de Bragelonne (1847). The novels of Alexandre Dumas have been translated into many languages and have undergone multiple adaptations (films, cartoons, novels, plays, musicals, comics, manga, etc.) in several languages, which have popularized the character and made him a “swashbuckling hero” known over the world. D’Artagnan is a unique historical figure, an instantly recognizable musketeer silhouette, with a finely trimmed mustache and beard, indicative of an era, which has stood the test of time without losing its strength or modernity. -

Le Masque de Fer Le 4 septembre 1687, en plein règne de Louis XIV, une gazette manuscrite informait ses lecteurs qu’un officier avait conduit par ordre du roi un prisonnier d’État dans un fort en Provence. Le 3 octobre, le même officier prend possession de la Bastille et il y amène un prisonnier qu’il avait avec lui. L'homme au masque de fer, gravure anonyme, 1789. Personne ne savait qui il était. Il était interdit de dire son nom et il y avait l’ordre de le tuer s'il le prononçait. Il avait un masque d'acier sur le visage. Le 19 novembre 1703, est mort à la Bastille un prisonnier inconnu toujours masqué d’un masque noir. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj-99piL9HU C’est Voltaire qui fait devenir l’homme au masque de fer une légende, en dédiant une partie du XXV chapitre de son livre « Le siècle de Louis XIV » (1751) à cet homme mystérieux. François-Marie Arouet, dit Voltaire, est un écrivain et philosophe français du XVII siècle. Réprésentant le plus connu du Siècle des Lumières. En 1752, la réédition du Siècle de Louis XIV ajoute l'anecdote de l'assiette d'argent sur laquelle le prisonnier inscrit son nom et qu'il lance par la fenêtre de la prison ; retrouvée par un pêcheur illettré, ce dernier l'aurait rapportée au gouverneur qui lui aurait dit, après s'être assuré qu'il n'avait pu déchiffrer l'inscription : « Allez, vous êtes bien heureux de ne pas savoir lire. » aLexandre duMas Alexandre Dumas (père) est un écrivain français né en 1802 et mort en 1870. -

Les trois mousquetaires I A.Dumas April 12-30, 2019 Of course I read ’The three musketeers’ when I was a child. In a Swedish translation of course, and at the age of ten or so I guess. Maybe I even reread it a few years later, if so at the age of 15 I guess. But that is speculation. I do remember that I found the book very exciting, and the names of Athos, Aramis and Porthos and their personalities became deeply engrave din memory (unlike those of their servants). But what did i really remember of it, except that I found it profoundly enjoyable. When it comes to specifics there are only a few fragments which linger in my memory. That d’Artagnan came from Gascony, and that it was important. That the musketeers got up at six o’clock in the summer at at eight in the winter (it is actually repeated once in the original text), and why should this stick in my memory? Maybe because it indicated a that every day was an adventure, as opposed to attending school? Also their signal of friendship ’One for all, and all for one’ which I now encounter for the first time in the French original (Tous pour un, un pour tous). I also recall the king Louis XIII and the Cardinal Richelieu, and that much action seems to take place around ’Jardin de Luxembourg’ which made this place somehow ’sacred’ to me during my visits to Paris. But of the actual plot, nothing at all! Reading the book now I wonder what could have excited a young boy? The intimations of love and sex? Hardly. -
