An estimated 46 million turkeys are killed each year at Thanksgiving alone so helping a rescued bird by sponsoring it is something we love to do. This year it occurred to me that having a representative from Farm Sanctuary come on the podcast and talk about the program might be a great way to help promote it. I emailed the sanctuary and received a response stating that the president and co-founder, Gene Baur, would be glad to join us for a chat! Through his investigations, he Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food uncovered and documented the deplorable living conditions and cruel practices of factory farming. His investigations helped to pass the first United States laws to ban inhumane factory farming practices. Gene Baur, the co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation's leading farm animal protection organization, knows that the key to happiness lies in aligning your beliefs with your actions. A founder of an organization dedicated to promoting the compassionate treatment of animals and combating factory farming addresses key questions about the ethics of breeding animals for food, exposing inhumane practices utilized by typical food-production companies. The Humane Education program helps educate children in the classroom about issues with our current food system, and also shares the stories of the animals who call Farm Sanctuary home. Adoption certificates can either be mailed or emailed. This year we adopted Gerda, who was saved by an anonymous rescuer. She was one of 24 turkeys rescued from a factory farm. Debeaked, weak, and ill, Gerda recovered and now enjoys a happy life at the sanctuary. Here is a video from one of those events! Doing what you can by sponsoring great organizations such as Farm Sanctuary in any way you can is one Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food step toward a time when all animals will no longer be seen as food but, rather, as friends. And Baur knows it. Baur is the founder of Farm Sanctuarya national organization that advocates against the mistreatment of farm animals and, more broadly, against the consumption of animal products. Is it really? Should we kill animals? We want people to challenge their assumptions and make choices that are consistent with their own interests and values. Some people call him a hero. Could Baur have Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food his book 20 years ago shortly after he founded Farm Sanctuary and expected it to hit both the Times and Boston Globe bestseller lists, as it recently did? Yeah, and pigs fly. And it certainly helps that a chorus of nonpartisan voices have begun to chime in. The latest comes from an extensive Pew Commission report released a month ago, which concluded, in so many words, that the current animal agriculture system needs to be thrown out, noting the lobbying power of a largely consolidated industry, along with a variety Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food human health and environmental concerns stemming from vague policies and poor regulation, as top reasons. Baur, for his part, is a classic muckraker type, talented at digging up information and presenting it lucidly to everyone from congressional committees to farm fest attendees. While his core argument is an emotional one — that animals have feelings, too, and should have rights similar to humans — he argues logically, with studies and facts and policies.
