Stammbaum der Familie Nieland The Nieland Family Tree 1615 - 2007 by Kay Buelt Davis and Elaine Pappe Lawson January 1, 2008 Copyright © 2008, Kay Buelt Davis and Elaine Pappe Lawson Stammbaum der Familie Nieland Foreword Research of the Nieland family history is an ongoing effort by several members of this large and colorful family. It draws upon and extends the research done by David A. Nieland that he published in 1965 under the title Stammbaum Der Familie Nieland - The Nieland Family Tree, 1740 - 1965. An updated family tree book was published on the Nieland Family website (www.nieland.our-kin.com) in January 2003 and revised in 2005. In 2006 and 2007, examination of the church and civil records in Germany revealed even more about our early ancestors. This January 2008 edition of the family tree book includes information about these earlier ancestors as well as over 1,500 new names that we have added to our genealogy database since 2005. We thank all of our extended family members who have graciously sent us new information about births, deaths and marriages as well as corrections for errors and omissions in our data. This book is provided as a downloadable file on the Nieland Family website by the family researchers solely for the purpose of sharing the results of their research with other family members. Any other use of this data is prohibited. It is hoped that the members of this family will review the data in this book, share it with other relatives, and contact us with any updates or corrections. Updates may be sent to the address listed below. The Nieland database that was used to develop the reports in this book is continually being updated as new information is uncovered and errors are corrected. This book represents the Nieland Family Tree as it is known as of the date on the title page. No claims as to the accuracy of the data are made. For privacy reasons, birth and death dates and places for living persons are omitted from the family tree information in this book. The word “private” is used to indicate individuals who are or may be living and for cases where the date of death is not known. _____________________________ Send additions and corrections to: Surface mail: Kay Davis, 28106 109th Avenue SE, Auburn, WA 98092 e-mail: [email protected] i Stammbaum der Familie Nieland ii Stammbaum der Familie Nieland Table of Contents Introduction ........................................................................................................................ 5 Photo History ...................................................................................................................... 9 Descendant Tree Diagram ................................................................................................. 15 Outline Descendant Tree .................................................................................................. 25 1 Earliest Nieland Ancestor 1615 -............................................................................ 25 .. 2 Berndt Nilandt 1645 - The name is thought to denote a geographical feature near which our ancestors once lived and is derived from the Old High German "niuwi" meaning "new" and "lant" meaning "land, territory." Thus the name indicates someone who settled on marsh land newly claimed by drainage or land just cleared by felling of trees. Searching for Our Roots Starting with our immigrant Nieland ancestors, we’ve traced the family tree generation by generation back through the centuries in search of earlier ancestors by examining church and civil records. We’ve populated the lower branches of the tree mostly with data from publicly available databases plus information sent to us by our living relatives. So far, we have identified over 8,000 family members, including many thousands that were born in America. The family tree now spans 14 generations of Nielands over a period of almost 400 years. The earliest direct Nieland ancestors that we’ve discovered so far lived in the early 1600s in a small community called Gemen, whose history dates from the 13th century. It is situated within the present day town of Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia, just a few kilometers from the Netherlands border. Because Gemen was a very small settlement, all individuals with the Nieland surname who lived in or near Gemen at that time were likely related to each other. There were probably even earlier Nieland ancestors in Gemen, but to date we haven’t found written records that could
