In this issue of the newsletter we take a look at the bioenergy landscape in our partner countries along the Danube. In this context, we set up an inventory of potential users for Danube logistics from the bioenergy industry by applying logistic criteria. We also would like to draw your attention already to the ENERGY BARGE online platform, whose first part with information on the biomass landscape will go online in June 2018. The online platform shall facilitate a cross-sector learning and contribute to a modal shift to Danube logistics. We hope you enjoy reading! The team of ENERGY BARGE ENERGY BARGE is co-funded by European Union funds (ERDF) Biomass and bioenergy company landscape in the Danube corridor The ENERGY BARGE team prepared a holistic and intuitive inventory on the biomass and bioenergy company landscape in the Danube corridor enabling identification of business partners along the bioenergy supply and value chain. Once integrated in the project’s online Danube biomass and bioenergy atlas, which will be launched in June 2018, it will serve as a business partner identification tool beyond the classical bioenergy value chain. The Danube biomass and bioenergy atlas will generate a sort of “yellow pages” of the biomass-bioenergy actor landscape in the Danube region and shall be at disposal for all business actors looking for new partners in their own country or other Danube region countries, as well as for logistics actors looking for potential customers. -

BRAZIL AND THE ALLIANCE FOR PROGRESS: US-BRAZILIAN FINANCIAL RELATIONS DURING THE FORMULATION OF JOÃO GOULART‟S THREE-YEAR PLAN (1962)* Felipe Pereira Loureiro Assistant Professor at the Institute of International Relations, University of São Paulo (IRI-USP), Brazil [email protected] Presented for the panel “New Perspectives on Latin America‟s Cold War” at the FLACSO-ISA Joint International Conference, Buenos Aires, 23 to 25 July, 2014 ABSTRACT The paper aims to analyze US-Brazilian financial relations during the formulation of President João Goulart‟s Three-Year Plan (September to December 1962). Brazil was facing severe economic disequilibria in the early 1960s, such as a rising inflation and a balance of payments constrain. The Three-Year Plan sought to tackle these problems without compromising growth and through structural reforms. Although these were the guiding principles of the Alliance for Progress, President John F. Kennedy‟s economic aid program for Latin America, Washington did not offer assistance in adequate conditions and in a sufficient amount for Brazil. The paper argues the causes of the US attitude lay in the period of formulation of the Three-Year Plan, when President Goulart threatened to increase economic links with the Soviet bloc if Washington did not provide aid according to the country‟s needs. As a result, the US hardened its financial approach to entice a change in the political orientation of the Brazilian government. The US tough stand fostered the abandonment of the Three-Year Plan, opening the way for the crisis of Brazil‟s postwar democracy, and for a 21-year military regime in the country. -

Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay - 2B m³ of water. 384km². 55 rivers contribute an average annual flow of 350m³/s (Portuguese: Baía de Guanabara, IPA: [ɡwanaˈbaɾɐ]) is an oceanic bay located in Southeast Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro. On its western shore lies the city of Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias, and on its eastern shore the cities of Niterói and São Gonçalo. Four other municipalities surround the bay's shores. Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in area in Brazil (after the All Saints' Bay), at 412 square kilometres (159 sq mi), with a perimeter of 143 kilometres (89 mi). Guanabara Bay is 31 kilometres (19 mi) long and 28 kilometres (17 mi) wide at its maximum. Its 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) wide mouth is flanked at the eastern tip by the Pico do Papagaio (Parrot's Peak) and the western tip by Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf). There have been three major oil spills in Guanabara Bay. The most recent was in 2000 when a leaking underwater pipeline released 1,300,000 litres (340,000 US gal) of oil into the bay, destroying large swaths of the mangrove ecosystem. Recovery measures are currently being attempted, but more than a decade after the incident, the mangrove areas have not returned to life. Max. length 31 km (19 mi) Max. width 28 km (17 mi) Surface area 412 km2 (159 sq mi) The bay has a mean 1.0 tidal range and exhibits a mixed , mainly semidiurnal period. The area weighted depth is 5.7m and the maximum depth is 58 m. -

Ribeiro School of Architecture, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Abstract This paper investigates the impact of the Guanabara Bay Cleaning Programme (GBCP) on the urban development process of the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area. Based on the magnitude of the budget of the programme (US$ 860.5 million) and its relevance to the improvement of the life quality of urban dwellers, the main focus of this paper is on the role of GBCP in the context of the Rio de Janeiro urban trends and intra-metropolitan inequality dynamics. We present here an analysis of GBCP’s role in Rio de Janeiro’s current urban development process, identifying its influences on the dynamics of socio- environmental inequalities. It can be affirmed that the GBCP plays an important role in improving the existing infrastructure of low-income areas in the Rio de Janeiro, but on the other hand several management and implementation problems counteract its positive impact and contribute to reaffirm the current spatial segregated pattern. Abstract Following the 2015 Paris Agreement, the main challenge for world economies nowadays is to commit themselves to long-term reforms aimed at increasing and promoting sustainable, inclusive and balanced development. An adequate response to this challenge will certainly require using the best available scientific knowledge and constant re- evaluation of the development process in light of the scientific findings. To ensure that the sciences are responsive to the emerging needs and to address sustainable development issues, from the beginning of the 21st century, a series of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) Conferences were founded.
