With the discovery of a new species of Oedipina from the foothills along the Caribbean versant of Costa Rica (see the following article), the number of species of salamanders in the country has risen to 51. When compared to other countries, this diversity of salamanders places Costa Rica 5th among all countries on the planet, behind the United States (1st), Mexico (2nd), China (3rd), and Guatemala (4th). When considering countries with an area greater than 5,000 km2, the highest diversity density of salamanders is found in the small country of Costa Rica, with one species/1,000 km2. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: I describe a new salamander of the genus Oedipina, subgenus Oedopinola, from two sites in Premontane Rainforest along the foothills of the central Caribbean region of Costa Rica, at elevations from 540 to 850 m. The type locality lies within the Guayacán Rainforest Reserve, a private reserve owned and operated by the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center, located approximately 2 km north of Guayacán de Siquirres, in the province of Limón. The new taxon is distinguished from its congeners based on phenotypic and molecular (16S and cyt b) characteristics. -

We review the taxonomy and distribution of Oedipina stuarti in Honduras. Based on uncertainty related to the type locality, we restrict the taxon to the holotype, which we posit originated from a mine in the northern portion of the Department of Valle, Honduras. We subsequently describe a new species of Oedipina from Distrito Central, Departamento de Francisco Morazán, Honduras, based on newly collected material as well as one specimen previously designated as a paratype of O. stuarti. The new species is differentiated from all other members of the genus by having 19 costal grooves, 20 trunk vertebrae, 27–38 maxillary teeth, and 20–24 vomerine teeth, as well as by its phylogenetic relationships. Cerrophidion wilsoni Jadin, Townsend, Castoe, and Campbell, 2012. The Honduran Montane Pitviper is a priority one species with an EVS of 15, placing it in the high vulnerability category (see this paper). This pitviper is distributed primarily in lower montane rainforest at elevations from 1,400 to 3,491 m, but can occur peripherally in premontane rainforest and pine-oak forest as low as 1,220 m (Jadin et al. 2012). As indicated by Jadin et al. (2012: 10), this snake “occurs in at least 13 isolated highland forest areas across Eastern Nuclear Central America…and all known populations…are found within the borders of Honduras and El Salvador.” This juvenile individual was found in Refugio de Vida Silvestre Texíguat, in north-central Honduras. One of the describers of this taxon is the dedicatee of this paper, and the snake was named in honor of one of the authors. Photo by Josiah H. Townsend. Amphib. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: The geological history of Central America is remarkably complex, as the region has served as the biological dispersal route between North and South America, and also has been the site of extensive in situ evolution. Nuclear Central America is recognized as a region of high biodiversity, and the eastern portion of Nuclear Central America (the Chortís Block) largely has been overlooked as a biodiversity hotspot. In this paper, I present a characterization of geological, physiographic, and ecological associations to define the Chortís Block Biogeographic Province. The Chortís Block is partitioned into the Caribbean and Pacific Lowlands and the Northern, Central, and Southern cordilleras, which in turn are delimited into 24 distinct highland areas and 14 intermontane valleys. I provide contextualized definitions of ecological formations and identify six lowland-associated habitats, of which four habitats are shared between lowlands and highlands, and 10 habitats are associated with highlands areas. I present a summary of the diversity, distribution, and conservation status of the herpetofauna of the Chortís Block, using a combination of the published literature and results from 19 expeditions to over 60 localities from 2006 to 2014. -

We use a multilocus dataset to investigate the biogeographic history and relationships among species of a small genus of salamander, Cryptotriton, restricted to the cloud forests of Nuclear Central America. We use a morphological data set along with a coalescent species delimitation method to reveal the presence of at least one undescribed species from an isolated cloud forest in eastern Guatemala. Biogeographic analyses show that Cryptotriton has a different biogeographic history than another clade of cloud forest-restricted salamanders in the same region, perhaps indicating that each genus restricted the spatial expansion and diversification of the other through preemptive occupancy. -

Ecnomiohyla Rabborum. Rabb's Fringe-Limbed Treefrog Is One of the Most Significantly Threatened Amphibians in Central America
Ecnomiohyla rabborum. Rabb’s Fringe-limbed Treefrog is one of the most significantly threatened amphibians in Central America. This species is one of the most unusual anurans in the region because of its highly specialized reproductive mode, in which the eggs are laid in water-containing tree cavities and are attached to the interior of the cavity just above the water line. Females depart the tree cavity after oviposition, leaving the males to brood the eggs and the developing tadpoles, and parental care apparently extends to feeding the tadpoles flecks of skin from the male’s body (AmphibiaWeb site: accessed 24 July 2014). Mendelson et al. (2008) described this tree canopy treefrog from “montane cloudforest in the immediate vicinity of the town of El Valle de Antón” (Am- phibiaWeb site: accessed 24 July 2014) in central Panama, at elevations from 900 to 1,150 m. This mode of reproduction is typical of the members of the genus Ecnomiohyla, which now comprises 14 species (Batista et al. 2014) with a collective distribution extending from southern Mexico to northwestern South America (Colombia and Ecuador). This treefrog appears to be one of the many casualties of a sweep-through of Panama by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in 2006. The arrival of this pathogen was anticipated by a team of amphibian biologists, who observed the disastrous effects of B. dendrobatidis on the popula- tions of anurans in the El Valle de Antón region. Individuals of E. rabbororum were taken into captivity and housed at Zoo Atlanta, but only a single male remains alive. -
