What are we, as Christian stewards, aiming to achieve by sharing our gifts and talents? INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance enve- lopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their enve- lopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepara- tion for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their

abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS

The following people have recently registered as parishioners of the Cathedral:

Trent and Diane Deguzis Mok Ksa

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, January 27: St. Angela Merici—Virgin Optional Memorial St. Angela Merici was born on 21, 1474 in Desenzano, Italy. When she ten years old, Angela and her sister became or- phaned. Following the death of her sister, Angela pledged her life to God as a consecrated virgin and joined the Third Order of St. Francis. She regularly received visions which led her toward teaching young girls in her village. While making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1524, she was struck blind while stopping on the island of . Her sight was miraculously restored on her return from that trip at the very same spot where it was taken away. On November 25, 1535, Angela founded the Company of Saint Ursula with twelve other virgins, which later became the Order of the Ursulines. Members of this new teaching order lived a rule of life which included celibacy, poverty, and obedience. Throughout the remainder of her life, Angela and the Ursulines opened schools and orphanages, and worked to promote education for young girls.

Monday, January 28: St. —Confessor and Doctor Memorial St. Thomas Aquinas was born in 1226 in , Italy as the son of the Count of Aquino. When he was five years old, Thomas was placed under the care of the Benedictines of Monte Cassino, where he excelled as a student. In 1243, he chose to devote himself fully to God, so he joined the Order of St. Dominic in despite the strong protests of his family, who went so far as to tempt him with a hired woman. Thomas traveled to Cologne for studies, and later taught in that city. He became a priest, and then traveled to Paris where he befriended the king, St. Louis. In the 1260s, Thomas was summoned to Rome by Urban IV, where he be- came the papal theologian and continued to teach. Thomas was offered numerous important positions and bishoprics, but he de- clined these honors. He wrote many works during in his life, including his masterpiece, the Summa Theologica, which was never completed as he died during its composition while traveling to the Council of Lyons. Quote: “Love is the source of all emotions.”

Tuesday, January 29: St. Gildas the Wise—Abbot St. Gildas was born around the year 517 in northern England to a noble family. Gildas lived for several years as a hermit on the Flatholm island where he practiced severe penances. He took on a strong interest in rebuking the moral laxity of corrupt leaders and rulers, and he often made his rebukes publicly through written works. In addition to writing, Gildas regu- larly traveled to preach the Gospel. He visited where he helped produce a multitude of conversions. Toward the end of his life, he founded a monastery in Rhuys, France. Wednesday, January 30: St. Aldegunais—Virgin and Abbess St. Aldegunais was born in Hainault, Flanders in the year 639. Both of her parents, Walbert and Ber- tila, were later recognized as by the Church. Aldegunais received several marriage proposals from would-be suitors, but she declined these offers and devoted her life to God. She received the religious veil from her bishop, and went on to found her own convent in Malbode located near the Sambre River. This convent later became Mauberge when it was taken over by the Benedictines. Al- degunais passed away after a battle with breast cancer in the year 684.

Thursday, January 31: St. John Bosco—Confessor Memorial St. John Bosco was born to a poor farming family in Becchi, Italy on August 16, 1815. Following his birth, he was consecrated to Our Lady by his mother. When he was two years old, his father passed away. Beginning about the age of five, John took on the task of tending the sheep to help his poor family. When he was nine years old, he began contemplating becoming a priest. He entered the seminary in 1835, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1841. He was sent to Turin, where he aided poor children. John regu- larly walked the streets, preaching to the kids he met. He fought to improve working conditions for young boys, and he, together with his mother, offered lodging for many young boys in poverty. In 1859, John founded the Salesian Society of St. Francis de Sales to assist boys in danger of trouble, and the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians to help young girls. Quote: "It is most im- portant that you choose your career with care, so that you may really follow the vocation that God has destined for you."

Friday, February 1: St. Brigid of Ireland—Virgin St. Brigid was born around the year 453 in Faughart, Ireland to a slave mother, and ended up living as a servant herself. After hearing St. Patrick preach as a young child, she spent the rest of her life caring for the poor. When Brigid gave away some of her father’s possessions to those in need, her father attempted to sell her as a slave to the King of Leinster. The king, however, was a Christian who recognized her great charity, and he convinced her father to grant her freedom. When her father tried to arrange a marriage for her, Brigid refused and made a vow of virginity. According to tradition, she prayed that her beauty be taken away so that the suitor would lose his interest, and it came to be. Later in her life, Brigid founded a monastery in Kildare called the “Church of the Oak,” and she created two monastic communities; one for men and one for women.

Saturday, February 2: St. Joan de Lestonnac—Widow St. Joan was born in Bordeaux, France on December 27, 1556. When she was seventeen years old, she entered into marriage and had four children with her husband, who passed away in 1597. When her children were fully grown, she entered the Cistercian monastery at Toulouse. In time, she began to suffer from health problems, so she ended up leaving that order. Joan returned to Bordeaux where she established her own religious order, the Congregation of the Religious of Notre Dame of Nor- deaux. This new community cared for plague victims and worked to fight the errors of Protestantism.
