But it wasn’t until she graduated from high school, and a friend persuaded her to join the Shanghai Drama Institute in 1993, that she discovered a passion for acting that would change her life. Her debut role in Zhang Yuan’s Seventeen Years in 1999 earned her a Best Actress award at the Singapore Film Festival and kick-started her diverse and critically-acclaimed film and television career. In 2001, she joined the cast of the hit TV series Young Justice Bao in a role that made her a household name in China. In 2004, Li starred in the romantic comedy Waiting Alone, which received three Chinese Academy Awards. She went onto win Best Actress at the 2007 Huabiao Awards for the role, and at the 2008 Hundred Flower Awards for her performance in The Knot (China’s entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2008 Academy Awards). In 2008, she starred with Jet Li and Jackie Chan in The Forbidden Kingdom, which introduced her to global audiences. The next year, her powerful performance in The Message earned her a Best Leading Actress award at the Golden Horse Film Awards. Soon after, Li took her first lead role in an English language film in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which screened at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Next up, she will collaborate with Jackie Chan once more to produce and star in 1911, scheduled for release in September 2011 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. 23 is all in When she’s not acting, Li devotes much of her time to environmental causes. As a UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) goodwill ambassador and a WWF Earth Hour global ambassador, she is committed to raising awareness about climate change, urging governments in developed and developing nations alike to take action. • “Power Femininity” and Popular Women's Magazines in China
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 2831–2852 1932–8036/20160005 “Power Femininity” and Popular Women’s Magazines in China EVA CHEN National Chengchi University, Taiwan Western women’s glossy magazines (“glossies”) have made increasing inroads in the Chinese market and advocate a “power femininity,” which celebrates women’s assertive individualism and power as consumerist agency. While this power femininity has global neoliberal resonances, it also taps into the unique postsocialist Chinese context, where the liberation of individual desires, including the material and the sexual, is linked with a strongly felt need to undo a past socialist wrong that repressed people and deprived them of what should be an inalienable human right. This concept departs from the caregiving, self-sacrificial, and family-oriented “natural femininity” promoted in local women’s magazines in terms of aspiration, assertiveness, and a nativist-versus- international divide, yet ultimately both the Western and local women’s magazines are united by a shared stress on the need to cultivate a distinct Chineseness in the feminine ideal and to position women’s magazines as an integral part of the Chinese nationalist project of modernization and progress. Keywords: Chinese femininity, Chineseness, neoliberalism, women’s magazines Contemporary women’s magazines in China are no longer politicized Party tools of the socialist era and instead are market driven and highly popular among women from all walks of life. Since China’s 2001 accession to the World Trade

  • Independent Cinema in the Chinese Film Industry
Independent cinema in the Chinese film industry Tingting Song A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology 2010 Abstract Chinese independent cinema has developed for more than twenty years. Two sorts of independent cinema exist in China. One is underground cinema, which is produced without official approvals and cannot be circulated in China, and the other are the films which are legally produced by small private film companies and circulated in the domestic film market. This sort of ‘within-system’ independent cinema has played a significant role in the development of Chinese cinema in terms of culture, economics and ideology. In contrast to the amount of comment on underground filmmaking in China, the significance of ‘within-system’ independent cinema has been underestimated by most scholars. This thesis is a study of how political management has determined the development of Chinese independent cinema and how Chinese independent cinema has developed during its various historical trajectories. This study takes media economics as the research approach, and its major methods utilise archive analysis and interviews. The thesis begins with a general review of the definition and business of American independent cinema. Then, after a literature review of Chinese independent cinema, it identifies significant gaps in previous studies and reviews issues of traditional definition and suggests a new definition. i After several case studies on the changes in the most famous Chinese directors’ careers, the thesis shows that state studios and private film companies are two essential domestic backers for filmmaking in China.

  • Wildaid 2014 Annual Report
PAGE!2 OUR VISION WildAid’s mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. While most wildlife conservation groups focus on scientifc studies and protecting animals from poaching, WildAid works to reduce global consumption of wildlife products. Our primary strategy is mass media campaigning to reduce demand for these products with our slogan: “When the Buying Stops, the Killing Can Too.” Using the same tech- niques as high-end advertisers, we want to make conserva- tion aspirational and exciting. We also help to protect marine reserves, such as the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador and Misool Eco Resort in Indonesia, to safeguard sharks, mantas and other marine wildlife from direct threats such as overfishing. With a comprehensive management approach and appropriate technologies, WildAid delivers cost-efective enforcement to secure marine sanctuaries. PAGE!3 LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER In 2014, WildAid’s long-running shark fn campaign in China achieved widespread acclaim and recognition after a 50 to 70 percent reported decline in shark fn sales. This was the conclusion of multiple sources, from shark fn traders, to independent online and restaurant surveys, to media investigations from CNN, the Washington Post, the People’s Daily and CCTV, as well as government statistics. Vendors reported a 50 percent decrease in prices over the previous two years. Meanwhile, 85 percent of consumers surveyed online said they had given up shark fn soup in the past three years, with two-thirds citing public awareness campaigns as a main reason for ending their shark fn consumption. In Indonesia, fshermen reported it was no longer worth targeting sharks.

  • Ai Weiwei, Jackie Chan and the Aesthetics, Politics, and Economics of Revisiting a National Wound
The Twelve Chinese Zodiacs: Ai Weiwei, Jackie Chan and the Aesthetics, Politics, and Economics of Revisiting a National Wound Frederik H. Green SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY hinese artist-activist Ai Weiwei 艾未未 and Hong Kong actor and director Jackie Chan C成龍 seem an unlikely pair to be included in an essay, yet, despite the different me- dia through which they express themselves, their respective celebrity status has, in the West, turned them into two of the best-known contemporary Chinese artists. In fact, to many West- erners, Ai Weiwei is to Chinese art what Jackie Chan is to Chinese martial arts cinema.1 In 2011 Ai Weiwei, who has had more solo exhibitions in Europe and America than any other Chinese artist, was named by the editors of ArtReview “the most powerful artist in the world,”2 while Jackie Chan has been described as a “star in the Hollywood pantheon . the only Chinese figure in popular culture who’s not regarded as some sort of imported novelty” (Wolf). What brings the two together here, however, is that in 2011 and 2012 they made headlines in the U.S. with a new installation and a new movie, respectively, both of which explore the same set of objects: twelve famous bronze heads depicting the animals of the Chinese zodiac. Originally the design of Jesuit scientists residing at the Chinese court during the Qing dynasty (1644- 1911), these bronze heads functioned as spouts for a complex water clock fountain that was part of an ensemble of European-style palaces inside the Old Summer Palace (Yuanming yuan 圓明園, literally ‘Garden of Perfect Brightness’).

  • 2016 Annual Report 4 at a Glance
2 OUR VISION WildAid’s mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. While most wildlife conservation groups focus on scientific studies and anti-poaching efforts, we work to reduce global consumption of wildlife products and to increase local support for conservation efforts. Teaming up with celebrity ambassadors and using the same techniques as high-end advertisers, WildAid creates aspirational and exciting conservation campaigns that are seen by hundreds of millions of people every year. We also collaborate with government and NGO partners to secure marine protected areas, such as the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador and Palau’s Northern Reefs, from threats such as illegal fishing. With a comprehensive management approach and the use of innovative technologies, we deliver cost-effective enforcement to key marine reserves around the world. At the invitation of the Chinese government, we are now using our communications model to encourage behavior change to reduce climate change. Our campaigns encourage lower carbon transport and food choices. TO LEARN MORE, VISIT WILDAID.ORG Cover: Sunda pangolin (©Paul Hilton) Inside cover: School of mobula rays (©Shawn Heinrichs) 3 FROM THE CEO 2016 was another year of incredible progress for WildAid. It often takes several years for us and other independent researchers to be able to document the fruits of our efforts, and last year we saw some massive results from previous years of work. These results prove that our model is replicable, cost-effective and an essential part of conservation success. For me personally, it was amazing to return to the Galapagos Islands after a six-year absence.

  • Waiting Alone (2004) Was His First Feature Film
搞笑网 Waiting Alone 独自等待 Dúzì děngdài Dayyan Eng 伍仕贤 (Wu Shixian), 2004 107 min Stars: Xia Yu 厦雨, Li Bingbing 李冰冰, Gong Beibi 龚蓓苾 Best First Feature (Beijing FF), Official Selection (Tokyo International FF; Thessaloniki IFF; Hawaii IFF). Best Actor (Beijing FF). Set among Beijing’s affluent and energetic youth culture, this exuberant romantic comedy follows a young man in his mid-20s, a partner in an antique shop and aspiring writer, who finds himself smitten by a young actress who seems to be the woman of his dreams, but is giving him ambiguous signals about her feelings toward him. At the same time he remains deaf to the potential of his ‘buddy’ relationship with the sister of his best guy friend. As he attempts to win over his dream woman, he battles with his own (often adolescent) insecurities, reels from the consequences of his own ineptness, and follows (or not) the advice of his close circle of friends. What might at first appear to be just another boy-gets-girl plot is saved by some unexpected (but credible) twists and turns in the story line, the completely engaging performance of Xia Yu in the lead role, and an entirely satisfying but unconventional ending. Made for millennials by one of their own—a ‘cross-cultural kid’ without nationalistic or political baggage—director Dayyan Eng rides the wave of China’s official embrace of cinema as pure entertainment. As of 2017, Waiting Alone remained the highest rated romantic comedy by Chinese audiences and critics, and a continuing favorite of Chinese millennials (八零后 Balinghou).
