Dave Ives says it was a night no one will ever forget. Fifty-two Paremata Plimmerton Rugby Football Club juniors were flag bearers at the sold-out Westpac Stadium on Saturday night, welcoming and Lions players onto the field for the final. Ives, the club’s junior convenor, said the opportunity for players from nursery grade to under- 13 to be front and centre for a historic occasion was brilliant. ‘‘We’re incredibly grateful to have had that opportunity. It was freezing cold, standing out there, but you couldn’t take the smile off their faces.’’ The Hurricanes’ 20-3 win, their maiden title in Super Rugby, made the occasion all the sweeter, Ives said.

LAURA DOONEY

Wellington secondary school students got an inside look at the world of engineering this week, as industry insiders attempt to bridge a gap in the industry. Last Monday marked the beginning of Engineering Week, the first week of its kind in New Zealand. Over five days 150 students learnt about the myriad opportunities available in the industry at the Beca offices in Thorndon. It was organised by Opus, Beca, MWH and AECOM. It was linked to a public aware- ness campaign launched by the Engineering, Education to Employment programme, which was set up in 2014 to help achieve a government goal to boost engin- eer numbers. KRIS DANDO

Former All Black says the signs weren’t good early on. The 44-year-old, a one-time TV personality, who played 29 matches, including 19 tests, for the All Blacks between 1995 and 1999, described graduating with his recruit wing, No 298, at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua on Thursday. It was an incredible feeling, he said. ‘‘Since I was a kid I always wanted to be in a black jersey, and I did that, but now I’m in a blue one. ‘‘My life has taken me down different avenues and I’m 44, but it’s so awesome to be here today. ‘‘I’ve had 30 years of no study and there are [recruits] here in their 20s, who’ve been to univer- sity, and they know how to do it. VIRGINIA FALLON

When Latu Talu steps into the ring he’s only thinking about his boys, all 100 of them. The head coach of Cannons Creek Boxing Academy has just won the national Senior Elite Lightweight (U60kg) boxing title and said it was the thought of the at-risk boys he coached that spurred him to victory. ‘‘I carry them on my shoulders. They make me a better fighter and the things I win I give to them, I feed them with my fight- ing.’’ Talu had to lose over 15kgs to compete in the weight division and said, despite having to give up his much-loved rice and chicken, it was worth it to become a New Zealand champion. ‘‘It was a lot of suffering, a lot of tears and a lot of blood, but if Latu Talu has you love something you have to won the do it.
